I’m so happy I found your blog- I am also a cardiac and thoracic surgery nurse in Canada but after 2.5 years of work I feel ready to retire and go to work solely to make money and save for my next trip… not how nursing should be! I am headed to goa in November to do my yoga teacher training and from there backpack through northern india with plans to go to Sri Lanka as well… I will likely be in touch looking for travel tips and advice- you inspire me !

Our stories share a couple similarities… I’m a nurse (2 years) on a cardiac floor… although I do love my job most of the time… I want to see the world. I feel like I’m living pay cheque to pay cheque just to pay rent & student loans but also see a few new places every year, my friends are starting to settle down and the thought of settling down makes me so restless…. I’m a vascular surgeon and head of a company that has been funded to build a first class hospital in Entebbe – as part of the new Entebbe airport city project. The hospital will be designed to attract medical tourists from around the African continent, and will therefore be self-sustaining economically and allow us to much more adequately remunerate health care providers at the hospital. I’ve done missionary work in the past ( 10 years in the Caribbean) – and medical care in the Caribbean sounds like first world compared to Uganda! I’d very much like to exchange with you to get your thoughts how we can change the way medical care is delivered in Uganda that will truly have an impact. I’m interested in trying to design a self-sustaining medical care system ( physicians and nurses) that does not require the continuous input of philanthropic or charitable agencies ( understanding at the outset the reasons for the tremendous brain drain from the country. Currently working in Arkansas, but excited by the prospects that exist in Uganda.

And I’m so happy just reading this stuff. There’s so many ideas up there that resonate with much I’ve been thinking about, and you’re quoting my favorite quotes(Tolkien), living the life I dream to live soon. But most importantly, now I get where I belong when it comes to being a hippie or someone indulging in luxury travel. I’m both! I’ve been travelling around India doing exactly the same for two years. Sipping tea in the remotest of cottages or travelling cheap to be able to afford my ocean view room.
And hey, I do have a job where I work for 6 months and travel the rest. Let me tell you, it’s amazing. And I found my hippie-in-heals in an oilfield!!

You’re a real inspiration and you seem lovely. I can totally relate to how you came about traveling the world.

I have done short solo travels around thailand in trains and i always travel third class to save money. but i am actually quite scared of using public transport to travel around india being a solo female traveler. How is it like? Did you feel safe?
