If you are looking to plan a girl’s weekend filled with rich culture, amazing food, and lively nightlife, then look no further than New Orleans, Louisiana! On my recent trip to The Big Easy, I was completely charmed by the city’s fun atmosphere and incredible history. There is plenty to eat, see, and do in this city, so what are you waiting for? Grab a girlfriend (or two, or three!) and follow this itinerary for an epic girls weekend in New Orleans you won’t forget!

Girls Weekend in New Orleans

Day 1 (Friday): Explore The Historic French Quarter

Wander The French Quarter

One of the best ways to get to know New Orleans is to simply walk around! The French Quarter is the most popular area in New Orleans among tourists, and for good reason. Here you can wander around while taking in the incredible and historic sights of the French Quarter. If you are like me and love your history, then I highly recommend hopping on a walking tour of the area the first day you arrive. Not only will it help you get acquainted with the city, but you’ll learn all about the history of New Orleans and the unique architecture that surrounds you.

Visit Jackson Square

Jackson Square is the French Quarter’s main plaza. While the square and the surrounding buildings date back to the 1700s, today the area remains as lively as ever. You are sure to run into street performers and artists, and you may even spot a few beads left over from Mardi Gras in the trees lining the park. Jackson Square is easy to recognize, and the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral is an excellent landmark by which to navigate.

Grab a Po’ Boy For Lunch

Since you will be spending much of the day walking around, be sure to refuel by stopping to get something to eat! A classic New Orleans Po’ Boy is a quick an easy lunch option for when you are out exploring and have worked up an appetite.

Tour Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1

New Orleans is famous for its historic cemeteries the colorful stories behind those interred. While in NOLA, a tour of Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 is not to be missed! Lying just outside of the French Quarter, this cemetery features above-ground graves and tombs, many of which date back to the 18th century. During the tour, you will learn all about the cemetery’s residents, such as Marie Laveau, famous for her part in New Orlean’s voodoo culture, and you’ll even pass by the future tomb of Nicholas Cage.

During my New Orleans trip, I took a combined tour of the French Quarter and Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1. Not only did this help me save some time and navigate the city, but I learned so much! You can read more about everything I saw on the tour here!

Treat Yourselves To A Nice Dinner Out

If there is one thing New Orleans does exceptionally well, it’s food! From amazing seafood to classic dishes like gumbo and Cajun flavors, it is hard to go wrong when eating in New Orleans. Treat yourselves to a fancy dinner at one of New Orleans’ best restaurants! Make sure to get reservations in advance when visiting any of NOLA’s popular restaurants such as Antoine’s, a 175-year-old restaurant famous for its French-Creole fine dining.

Hit The Town- Bourbon & Frenchman Street

A girl’s trip to NOLA wouldn’t be complete without a night out on the town! New Orleans nightlife is world-famous. Start your night off by heading to Bourbon Street, a wild and fun street lined with bars and filled with tourists looking to experience some New Orleans nightlife. While many visitors enjoy simply hanging out on Bourbon street (you can even take to go cups as there are no laws against open containers, I highly recommend venturing a little further to Frenchman Street for a more authentic feel and some excellent live music. New Orleans is a city filled with amazing Jazz music, so be sure to venture off Bourbon to hear some!

Day 2 (Saturday): Plantation Day Trip and Haunted New Orleans

Breakfast at Cafe Du Monde

Start the day off on the right foot by heading to breakfast at Cafe Du Monde. There isn’t much on the menu-in fact, the cafe just serves beignets, coffee, and drinks, but the Cafe Du Monde is the most famous place in NOLA to get these powder-sugar coated treats. I highly recommend going early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Be prepared to have a very satisfied sweet tooth!

Day Trip To Oak Alley Plantation

Just outside of New Orleans lies the beautiful Oak Alley Plantation, originally built in 1839 and known for the 29 oak trees that welcome visitors to the home. The trees are over 200 years old, and make for a pretty amazing Instagram shot! I totally felt like Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind! Oak Alley was even featured in a Beyonce music video, and if Queen Bey approves, then it must go on the itinerary ;) .  If you don’t have a car for the weekend, there is no need to worry, you can actually book a plantation tour with transportation from New Orleans. While there, you will learn the history of the plantation and have time to tour the grounds-you’ll also want to grab a delicious Mint Julep!

During my trip to New Orleans, I actually visited two plantations, Oak Alley and Laura. While I loved the picture-perfect beauty of Oak Alley, I really enjoyed the more historical tour of Laura. If you have time, I highly recommend seeing more than one plantation, as each has a unique feel and point of view.

Head To An Oyster Bar

The seafood in New Orleans is to die for, so be sure to grab your girls and head to an Oyster Bar at some point! While raw oysters aren’t for everyone, they are also delicious char-grilled and are definitely worth a try!

Discover Haunted New Orleans

As beautiful as New Orleans is, the city has quite a haunted history. To learn all about the creepy tales and haunted homes of NOLA, you will want to join a Ghost Tour of New Orleans. These tours are a great way to hear some of the more twisted tales that took place in the French Quarter and see the city’s haunted spots. You may even discover that your hotel is haunted! No need to worry though, with your girlfriends in tow there is nothing to fear, not even ghosts!

Grab a Cocktail on a Carousel

After the tour, head to the Hotel Monteleone, a historic French Quarter hotel with one of the most famous bars in the city. The hotel is home to a carousel bar which actually rotates as you sit down. The cocktails are delicious, although the bar does get quite busy, so you may want to arrive early if you are hoping to sit on the carousel itself. You can either end the night here, or head back out on the town for another fun night in NOLA!

Day 3 (Sunday): Brunch, Rooftop Bar

Is it even a girl’s trip if you didn’t go to brunch? Brennan’s opened in 1946 and the restaurant’s gorgeous dining rooms will definitely make it on your Instagram! Not only is the restaurant a beauty, but the food is delicious too, which is why the restaurant is considered one of New Orleans’ best. Brennan’s is particularly popular at brunch, so be sure to make reservations!

Explore The Garden District, Visit The WWII Museum, or take a Swamp Tour! 

There is so much to do in New Orleans that it is impossible to fit everything in one weekend! Spend the afternoon doing whatever activity piques your girlfriends’ interest most, be it taking the old trolley to check out the Garden District, visiting the world-renown WWII Museum which is absolutely incredible, or hanging out with some alligators a swamp tour! Whatever you choose, you are sure to have an excellent time!

Celebrate a Great Trip At A Rooftop Bar

I don’t know about you, but I am obsessed with rooftop bars. What better way to end a trip than by sipping a cocktail while overlooking New Orleans? There are several great rooftop bars to choose from in New Orleans, but I highly recommend the Hot Tin Rooftop Bar at the Garden District’s Pontchartrain Hotel. Not only is the view amazing but the drinks are fantastic!

Does living in Italy and getting paid to travel around Europe sound like a dream job to you? Well, as a freshly graduated college student who fell in love with Italy when studying abroad, it sounded like the perfect job for me! I’m going to explain how to become a travel guide in Europe.

Today, I’m talking all about my year living and working in Italy as a student travel guide. As someone who has always been passionate about traveling, I wholeheartedly believe that choosing to live and work in Italy after graduating is one of the best decisions I’ve made.

While most of my friends were settling into their 9-5 routines, I was busy traveling around Europe and exploring Italy. In fact, in my year working as a student travel guide, I actually got paid to visit over 10 countries and 20+ cities.  Working as a student travel guide was such a rewarding experience, and is a huge reason why I was able to afford to travel so much!

That being said, working abroad wasn’t all pretty Instagrams and gelato-keep reading to learn more about this travel job, and see if working as a student travel guide is right for you!

How I Found The Job

Believe it or not, the job actually sort of fell into my lap while I was studying abroad in Florence, Italy. If you have ever studied abroad in Europe, you may remember meeting a few Americans, fresh out of college, working for student travel companies in your city. I headed on a couple of trips with the company I would later work for, and the tour guide I befriended would later become my boss! When the time came around to apply, my friend made sure to send me an application, and the rest is history.

Landing The Job

You don’t always have to know someone at a student travel company to get hired, however, it definitely helps. The job is very social, so having someone to vouch for your personality will definitely get your resume to the front of the applicant pile. If you are planning on studying abroad and think this job might be for you, then I highly recommend befriending a tour guide or two who you can use as references later.

If you don’t know anyone at a student travel company or haven’t studied abroad, then just be sure to put together a great application that shows how perfect of a fit you are for the job.

What are student travel companies looking for?

Student travel companies are looking for outgoing, social, motivated leaders who love traveling and are great at selling and putting themselves out there. On your application, you will want to highlight any involvements you had in college, and social groups you may have been a part of. On my application, I emphasized my love of travel, social media savvy, past work experience, and my involvement in a sorority in college. So what exactly does a student travel guide do?

While the travel aspect of the job is what immediately comes to mind for most people, the reality is that the job can be broken down into 3 main categories: sales, nightlife, and lastly, travel. I’m putting travel last because even though this is the reason most people dream about working for a travel company, you actually will only be traveling on weekends, and have many responsibilities during the week!

Sales

The most important part of the job is, surprisingly, sales! Most tour guides are paid on commission, meaning that you are paid based on how many trips you sell. The more trips you sell, the more money you’ll make, so this part of the job is paramount.

You’ll spend your weekdays trying to meet as many study abroad students (aka potential clients) as possible in the hopes that they will use your promo code to book a trip. This requires excellent social skills and social media know-how, as your primary way of reaching out to students is either in person or via Facebook.

During the beginning of each semester, you’ll pretty much be working around the clock. You’ll spend long days walking around handing out flyers, constantly messaging students on Facebook, meeting up with students in person, and being a brand ambassador 24/7.

Nightlife

This brings me to the second most important part of the job-nightlife. Many travel companies require you to attend at least 1 nightlife event each week, and oftentimes one every night during the first few weeks of the semester. After all, one of the best ways to meet study abroad students is out at the bars, and travel companies often work with local establishments to promote bars, clubs, and nightlife events while promoting their travel company at the same time.

If you love going out, then you will love this part of the job. To many travel guides it is a great way to extend those college years a bit. If you are like me, and prefer going out 1-2 times a month, this will quickly become one of your least favorite parts of the job.

Tour Guiding

Finally, the best part of the job-traveling! After working hard to sell as many trips as possible, you will finally be able to enjoy all of your hard work on the weekends. Many travel companies base who is going on a weekend trip on sales, so it is important to sell well during the week if you are hoping to go somewhere during the weekend. As a travel guide, you will be expected to help lead a group of around 50 study abroad students with another guide or two.

You will start out as an assistant guide-usually taking photos, counting to make sure the group is all there, making sure no one gets lost, and assisting the Lead guide.

Lead guides, which you may be promoted to at some point, are in charge of everything else-coordinating with the bus driver, making sure the group arrives at scheduled activities prepared and on time, leading walking tours, and dealing with any unexpected situations that may pop up. It can be quite a responsibility!

As a top seller in my company, I was traveling nearly every weekend-which was totally awesome but can also be very exhausting! Long overnight bus rides, late nights out with students in different countries, and tour guiding can be quite tiring, but getting to explore different places all the time was so worth it.

How much do student travel guides make?

This is a tough question to answer, as pay varies greatly between different companies, and often depends on your sales abilities.

Generally, tour guides have free accommodation, earn commission from sales, and may (or may not) be paid to lead or assistant guide on tours. Commission percentages, housing situations, and tour guide pay varies widely between companies, so it is hard to put together an exact number.

In my particular situation, my rent was covered as I lived in company housing, I had all of my expenses paid when on a trip, and I was also paid to be a lead guide (although I was not paid as an assistant guide).

My first semester, I pretty much broke even, however, during my second semester working I was able to save enough money to help fund a three month trip through Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. That being said, few tour guides make this much money-I was a top seller at a smaller company, whereas some larger travel companies are much more competitive.

If you are thinking about working as a student travel guide, then I highly recommend heading abroad with some savings-there is no way to know in advance if your company will have a successful semester or if you will consistently make sales. Make sure you have some money saved up in case you are struggling to earn enough for groceries, and you will definitely want to have enough saved up for a flight home.

The perks of the job

The main reason I wanted to work for student travel company was to travel, and travel I did! During my year working for a student travel company, I was able to visit over 10 countries and well over 20 cities around Europe-while getting paid. It was basically a dream come true. The pros and cons

While every person has a different experience working for a student travel company, I’m pretty sure that everyone can agree that there are definitely pros and cons to the job. While traveling around so much sounds like a dream come true, and in many ways it is, there are some pretty big downsides to the job as well.

The pros:

My favorite parts of being a travel guide were being able to visit so many places without having to spend a dime, living in my favorite city, Florence, and the amazing friends I made while working. I also had some unforgettable life experiences made possible by working as a travel guide-like attending Oktoberfest, sleeping in a prison in Slovenia (it isn’t what it sounds like, I promise), and hiking in Cinque Terre nearly every weekend in the summertime.

The cons:

Over time, repeating the same itineraries every trip can get a little boring, and my bed in Florence started sounding more and more appealing as I boarded yet another 6-hour bus ride to the Amalfi Coast. I also really had a difficult time keeping up with all of the nightlife events while I enjoy going out occasionally, mandatory nightlife was not much fun for me, and quickly became my least favorite part of the job.

Living with co-workers can also be problematic, but I was fortunate to work for a close-knit company and had great roommates throughout my time living in Italy. Working for an Italian company also took quite a bit of getting useful, and cultural differences (and not always getting paid on time) sometimes made work frustrating.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I had an amazing experience and would highly recommend looking into working for a student travel company to anyone interested in living and working in Europe while also getting paid. That being said, make sure you are clear on exactly what the job entails before applying-I know many people who have gotten the job only to quit within a few months because they severely underestimated exactly how much they would be working, are not outgoing or dislike sales, or couldn’t handle the often competitive work environment, lack of sleep, and nightlife requirements, among other reasons.

Santorini is one of the most iconic and easily recognized islands in all of Greece. The white cliffside buildings and brilliant blue domes overlooking the Aegean create a picture-perfect paradise.  The island is so photogenic that I barely managed to put my camera down during my week-long visit!

While it is difficult to find a “bad” photo spot in Santorini, there are some locations that stand above the rest. Discover my top 5 photo locations in Santorini, and don’t forget to add them to your list of things to do in Santorini! 

Best Photo Locations in Santorini

1. Oia’s Iconic Architecture

If you visit Santorini and don’t come home with a photo of the whitewashed buildings of Oia, did you even visit Santorini at all? If you love taking photos, you will definitely want to plan (lots) of time to snap away in Oia. This town is one of the most popular for watching the sunset. In fact, crowds gather to watch it nearly every evening! Watching the sun slip into the Aegean from behind the town’s signature windmills is simply unforgettable. Be sure to grab a photo of the windmills as well as a photo looking back on the crescent-shaped island from the old Byzantine Castle ruins. 

2. The Blue Domes of Imerovigli

Can’t get enough of the stunning blue domes on Santorini? Then you will definitely want to stop by Imerovigli. Here you will find the Imerovigli Anastasi Church, the perfect place to capture the blue domes and get a few great pictures of yourself against a gorgeous backdrop. My favorite thing about this photo location is that it isn’t as crowded as Oia, so you will probably have an easier time getting a great shot! You may even have the chance to see a wedding (or at least a wedding photography shoot!). 

3. Akrotiri, Santorini’s Red Sand Beach

Part of what makes Santorini so unique is that it has red sand, black sand, and white sand beaches. I’ve seen white sand beaches in the Carribean, black sand beaches in Hawaii and Positano, Italy, but before Santorini, I had never seen a red sand beach! Akrotiri is home to Santorini’s famous red-sand beach. The contrast of the blue water with the reddish-brown sand and cliffside truly is stunning. While you are in the area, you can catch a boat to the island’s white sand beach, or check out the Pompeii-like ruins of Akrotiri. 4. Santorini’s Volcano & Caldera

Santorini is a caldera, and the island gets its unique crescent shape because it was formed by the collapse of a volcano. If you are visiting Santorini, I highly recommend taking a volcano and hot springs day trip to go see the volcano for yourself and take a dip in the springs. If you don’t have the time to actually visit the volcano, you can get a great shot of it in Fira, one of the main towns in Santorini that all of the buses pass through. Fira is another excellent place to watch the sunset, after all, it isn’t every day you can watch the sun set from behind a volcano!

5. Ammoudi Bay

Ammoudi Bay not only has a gorgeous view of Santorini, but it is also the perfect spot to do some cliff jumping, which is definitely a must-do Santorini adventure! If you can, swim out to the jumping rock with a waterproof camera/gopro, or (for those with larger budgets) dock a boat here for a pretty amazing view of Oia above and the cliffs below. You might even recognize this spot from the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants!

While these 5 spots will definitely get you some stunning photos, the best way to find awesome photo spots in Santorini is simply by exploring the island! No matter where you turn, you are sure to find a gorgeous viewpoint, perfect beach, or beautiful backdrop nearby. I highly recommend renting an ATV so you can hop on/off easily while exploring the island. Santorini truly is a dream island, whether you love taking photographs, or a hoping for a relaxing vacation!

Florence, Italy is visited by over 16 million tourists each year, and it is easy to see why. In my year living and working in this city straight out of the Renaissance, I completely fell for the charm, history, and culture in Firenze. It can be hard to find the best-kept secrets in Florence, so we’re going to help you out.

In a city so filled with tourists, it can be easy to get caught up in Florence’s main attractions. While San Lorenzo, the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and Uffizi truly are amazing, if you are planning a visit to the city, you’ll want to make time to see some of Florence’s hidden gems. To help you discover the city’s lesser-known treasures, I’m sharing the top 10 best-kept secrets in Florence! Shh…don’t tell…or do! ;)

Best-Kept Secrets In Florence

1. The view from San Miniato

If you are looking to take an amazing photo of Florence or watch the sunset over the city, most people will direct you to the famous Piazzale Michelangelo. While the view from the Piazzale is excellent, just a short walk away you’ll find San Miniato. This 12th-century church is one of the oldest in Florence, and the view is simply incredible. You’ll also find that it isn’t packed with tourists, as the Piazzale often is.

2. Artisans in Florence

We love buying from artisans, whether it’s on a shopping tour in India or searching for the best deals in Morocco. Europe, of course, is no different.

In Florence, you are sure to encounter plenty of “artisans” selling their wares on the streets. While you may find genuine art on the streets of Florence, keep an eye out for mass-produced souvenirs, and try visiting an artisan instead. My personal favorite is the “secret” jewelry workshop of Giuliano Ricchi. There is no sign to find the building where the workshop is located, and you must know which buzzer to press when entering. Despite the lack of signage, inside the shop, there is an abundance of handmade jewelry at fair prices. Giuliano himself may actually give you a tour of his workspace! 3. Shh…it’s a Secret…Bakery

The secret bakeries of Florence are quite popular among night owls and study abroad students, but these late-night bakeries often go unnoticed by visitors to Florence. The reason why? The secret bakeries of Florence often don’t open until 2 AM or later. If you find yourself awake and looking for a late night snack, be sure to stop by one of these bakeries. You won’t find a sign, you’ll just have to trust your nose and follow the scent of freshly baked croissants (or the sound of college students heading home from the clubs). For 1 euro, you’ll end up with a delicious freshly baked good long before the local cafes are open.

4. The Vasari Corridor

The Vasari corridor is a hidden passageway in Florence that connects the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti. The corridor was originally built by the Medici family to connect the Uffizi to the palace where the family resided. Today, you’ll have to make reservations in advance to visit, as much of the corridor is closed to the public.

5. The Apennine Colossus

Just a bus ride away from Florence lies the amazing Colosso dell’Appennino or Appenine Colossus. While I wouldn’t recommend a visit if you are only in Florence for a short time, if you have some time to play with and really love art, then you won’t want to miss this gigantic 16th-century statue. If you don’t have time to visit the park, the famous Boboli gardens in Florence now house many works that were relocated from the Villa Demidoff. 6. Street Art Everywhere

Okay, so if you are pretty observant this one won’t be a secret for you, but for those of you struggling to take your eyes off the beautiful architecture of the city, you may overlook the street art scene in Florence. Throughout the city, you’ll find plenty of street art done by local artists. I especially recommend trying to find Blub’s underwater scenes. You’ll also see many street signs that have been cleverly re-designed by Clet. He is so popular there is even a retail location in Florence where you can purchase your own print or sticker!

7. Rooftop Bars

The rooftop bars in Florence are some of my favorite places to spend an afternoon, sipping cocktails with friends enjoying amazing views of the city. While these bars aren’t exactly hidden, they aren’t easy to detect from the ground! You’ll find many of them above hotels, or even above the popular shopping center La Rinascente. Be sure to treat yourself to evening relaxing at one of my 5 favorite rooftop bars in Florence!

8. The city’s smaller museums

Florence is famous for its museums, particularly the incredible Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia. These museums are certainly worth a visit, but I’m also so in love with Florence’s many smaller museums. The Bargello and Museo di San Marco are two of my favorites, and they usually don’t have lines!

9. Florence’s best restaurants

There are so many places to eat in Florence, which can be really overwhelming to a first time visitor. To help you sift through the tourist traps and get to the best food in town, I’ve compiled a list of the top 30 places to eat and drink in Florence. From the best fancy restaurants to the most delicious pizza and gelato, your taste buds will thank you for taking the time to seek out the yummiest food in town!

10. The side streets of Florence

Many times when walking around Florence it can feel like there are tourists (and selfie stick salesmen) everywhere. So go ahead and get lost-often times the best-hidden gems I’ve discovered when walking outside the beaten path and main tourist locations. One of the best places to escape the crowds is Oltrarno or the “other side” of the Arno river. This neighborhood is far less crowded and has a more low-key and local vibe.
