Hi everyone, this is Rachel’s family and friends here. As hard as it is to believe, we approach the three-year anniversary of her passing.

For those who are new here or unaware, sadly and tragically, Rachel was taken from us far too soon as a result of complications arising from an unknown heart condition. We discuss it more here.

As time passes, we’ve grappled with how best to honor and remember our wildflower beyond Hippie in Heels. Rachel lived a full life and touched so many peoples’ lives, especially young women travelers, while she was here with us on earth. She was an adventurer, fearless and free. She traveled the world, experiencing new cultures and making good friends along the way.

In 2012, she met the love of her life, Ben, and settled in Goa, India. From that point forward, Rachel put her heart and soul into this travel blog. She aspired to reach young travelers especially young women travelers to give them the tools and courage needed to get out there and see this beautiful world. All who had the privilege of knowing Rachel knew she had a big and giving heart and always had a soft spot for animals, especially her fur babies.

In her honor, we are going red for Rachel on June 4, 2022.

What Does Going Red Mean?

Go Red for Women is part of the American Heart Association and “a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.” 

Go Red’s goal is to simply save more lives by educating women and bringing awareness to cardiovascular diseases which claim the lives of nearly 500,000 women every year. It is our hope with Go Red for Rachel that we can help this mission and ensure no other family goes through what we went through. 

The 2nd Annual Go Red for Rachel Memorial 5k Run & 2 Mile Walk

This year we’ve expanded to include both a 5k Run and a 2-Mile Walk. The run will begin at 9:00 AM while the walk will begin at 9:05 AM. 

With this run and walk we also hope to honor Rachel’s life and continue to spread the positive influence of her desire to lead and inspired women across the world to chase after their dreams.

• Time: 8:00 AM for t-shirt pick-up and 9:00 AM for the walk

Participants aged 13 and older require registration. Young kids are welcome to participate in the walk with parents and do not need to be registered. Strollers are allowed. Dogs on leashes are allowed.

If you register prior to May 5 you will be guaranteed the t-shirt of your size to be picked up the morning of the walk.

All proceeds and donations will go to AHA’s Go Red For Women initiative.

As someone who has lived on the island for my entire life, I’m always giving people recommendations of places to visit on Oahu. After all, there’s so much more to the island than just the tourist hub of Waikiki!

While on Oahu, you can learn about Hawaiian history at ‘Iolani Palace, watch pro surfers tackle massive waves at Banzai Pipeline, and even see a recreation of a famous Japanese temple!

So whether you’re looking for adorable towns, hidden gems, historic landmarks, or beautiful beaches, here are 12 amazing places to visit on Oahu, Hawaii.

12 Amazing Places to Visit on Oahu, Hawaii

1. ‘Iolani Palace

Many visitors to Oahu forget to take some time to learn about Hawaiian history. A trip to ‘Iolani Palace, the only official palace in the United States, can easily remedy that problem.

‘Iolani Palace was once home to King Kalakaua and Queen Lili‘uokalani, the last of Hawaii’s reigning monarchs. And when a group of American businessmen decided to overthrow the Kingdom of Hawaii, Queen Lili‘uokalani was then held prisoner in this palace for eight months.

While at ‘Iolani Palace, you can learn more about Hawaiian history, discover how Hawaiian royalty lived, and even see the room in which Queen Lili‘uokalani was imprisoned. If you decide to visit at the end of July, you might even get to watch the amazing Prince Lot Hula Festival.

2. Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay is one of the most famous beaches on Oahu. In the summer, the conditions are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. In the winter, they are great for surfing. But Waimea Bay is most famous for cliff diving. On the western end of the beach, there is a fifteen-foot-tall rock where locals and visitors alike brave their fears of heights for little thrills.

3. Ka‘a‘awa Valley

While many visitors to Oahu spend the entirety of their vacations on the beach, very few remember that Oahu also has stunning mountain ranges. And that’s a shame, because these mountains are one of my favorite parts of the island! One of the best places to visit on Oahu to see these greenery-laden mountain ranges is Ka‘a‘awa Valley.

The easiest way to access Ka‘a‘awa Valley is by visiting Kualoa Ranch. There are many different tours you can take at Kualoa Ranch, but my favorite is the ATV tour. While on any

of the provided tours, you’ll be able to admire the views of the thriving Ka‘a‘awa Valley and Ko‘olau Mountain Range, learn about Hawaiian mythology, and even eat fresh tropical fruits right off the tree!

Kualoa Ranch also happens to be a popular filming location. Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, Jumanji, and many more movies and TV shows have been filmed there. Even Netflix’s latest hit, Finding ‘Ohana, was filmed at Kualoa Ranch.

4. Kailua

Kailua is a small town on the east side of Oahu that is most well-known for its beautiful beaches. It is, after all, home to both Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach, both of which have been recognized as a couple of the best beaches in the world.

But Kailua also has a different feel from the rest of the island. It combines the island’s relaxed, yet adventurous atmosphere with a free-spirited vibe. You can kayak to the Mokulua Islands, try vegan lau lau (a traditional Hawaiian dish wrapped in ti leaves) from Ai Love Nalo, and even hike to the Lanikai Pillbox for sunrise.

5. Lanikai Pillbox Hike

While the Lanikai Pillbox Hike is technically located in Kailua, it deserves a feature of its own.

The first question many people have is, “what is a pillbox?” A pillbox is essentially a cement military bunker that was built during World War II and used as a lookout point. There are quite a few pillboxes dotted around the island, but the Lanikai Pillbox is the most famous one.

This 25-minute hike to the first pillbox gives you amazing views of the two bright green Mokulua Islands in the distance. When combined with the sparkling blue Pacific Ocean and the golden rays of a sunrise, the scene is absolutely magical!

6. Byodo-In Temple

The Byodo-In Temple is definitely one of the best places to visit on Oahu – but not many people know about it! This bright red Japanese temple is actually a miniature version of the Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan, which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

7. Pearl Harbor National Memorial

On December 7, 1941, the U.S. navy base at Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese Navy Air Service, killing over 1,000 people. This event incited the United States’ involvement in World War II.

Today, you can visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial to learn about the events leading up to and following the attack, pay your respects, and even meet a veteran of the Pearl Harbor bombing.

8. Koko Crater Botanical Garden

Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden is the Oahu garden that has been getting tons of Instagram fame over these past few years. And while Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden is certainly beautiful, Koko Crater Botanical Garden is my personal favorite for one main reason: the plumeria grove.

Located right at the entrance of the garden, the plumeria grove includes dozens of plumeria varieties in all sizes, shapes, and colors! With blooming flowers ranging from pristine white to striking pink, it’s a gorgeous sight to see.

9. Kaka‘ako

Kaka‘ako is the trendiest neighborhood on Oahu. Situated in Honolulu, Kaka‘ako boasts fun fusion restaurants, amazing street art, and exciting events. You could easily spend your entire day admiring the murals from the Pow Wow! Hawaii festival, dining at one of the restaurants at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako, perusing the adorable shops of the South Shore Market, and enjoying the atmosphere of the Honolulu Night Market.

10. Banzai Pipeline

Banzai Pipeline – or just Pipeline – is known as one of the premiere surfing spots in the world – and it’s located on Oahu’s North Shore! Simply put, it’s one of the coolest places to visit on Oahu.

In the winter, waves regularly reach 20 to 30 feet (or 40 to 60 feet for anyone who isn’t from Hawaii, because we measure wave size differently). You can often see pro surfers like Kelly Slater and Billy Kemper surfing these massive waves! And if you’re lucky, there might even be a surf competition during your time on the island, such as Billabong Pipe Masters or Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.

11. Laniakea Beach

Laniakea Beach, also known as Turtle Beach, is definitely one of the best places to visit on Oahu. Oahu has tons of wildlife enjoying the island, but none are as easy to see as the turtles on Laniakea Beach. As a matter of fact, in the summers, it’s not uncommon to see half a dozen Hawaiian green sea turtles lounging on the sandy shores.

If you do visit Laniakea Beach, please remember to give the turtles space and respect. Hawaiian green sea turtles are actually an endangered species, so it’s especially important that you do not feed or touch these animals.

12. Dole Plantation

Ever since the Dole Plantation was established on Oahu in 1899 by James Dole, this company has been ingrained into Hawaii life. We buy Dole pineapples at local grocery stores, enjoy fruity drinks made with Dole pineapple juice, and occasionally stop by the Dole Plantation for a tasty Dole whip.

While at the Dole Plantation, you can learn about the company’s history, ride on the kid-friendly train, enjoy loads of pineapple treats, and even wander through the world’s largest maze!

Looking for some restaurants to try in NYC? Check out these incredible Black-owned options below!

Home for me is all about the food, and I believe in the power of celebrating and supporting Black-owned restaurants year-round. I come from a huge family, so moving to Harlem in the middle of the pandemic in 2020 – and during the week when many protests started to pop up around the city – meant I wanted to find not only the best Black-owned restaurants in the city but also the best spots for comfort food.

While I obviously couldn’t get the full NYC summer experience, I took advantage of ordering takeout and compiled a list of some of my favorite spots as I began to settle into the city I had waited half my life to call home.

7 Incredible Restaurants to Check Out in NYC

The Edge Harlem

The Edge Harlem was started by two native New Yorker sisters in 2014 and celebrates their British and Jamaican roots. You can order everything from fish & chips to ackee or jerk chicken, and brunch staples.

“So… what made you move to New York in the middle of a pandemic?” My soon-to-be father-in-law asked during our first meeting over brunch one Saturday in October. I nervously laughed in between bites of shrimp and grits and explained my love for the city and childhood dreams of being a cliché Black girl writer in Harlem. The shrimp and grits are easily in my top 5. I can’t speak to libations (I was trying too hard to impress my partner’s parents) but the homemade ginger beer and sorrel are definitely worth a try.

Lolo’s Seafood Shack

Lolo’s was started by Leticia Skai Young and Chef Raymond Mohan. The two take the best of West Indies flavors, particularly with a Guyanese flair. As the daughter of a native Virginian, it was only right that I FaceTime my now inland bound mother as I cracked into the crab and shrimp boil.

The side of sweet plantains were the perfect addition to my crab legs and shrimp steam pot. My taste buds are sensitive to spicy foods, but I chose to indulge myself with the Lolo’s fries. I ordered for pick up, but if you get a chance, sit outside. Their building brings beach vibes to 116th Street––you can’t miss it!

Harlem Shake

Harlem Shake opened in 2013 and has since received rankings for best milkshake, burgers, and family restaurant in New York City for multiple years. The menu has plenty of options (even for vegetarians––or flexitarians like myself!) but they keep it simple. You can choose between the Classic, Hot Mess, or Jerk for your burger.

I’ve been trying to become vegan for about 5 years. It’s not working, and Harlem Shake doesn’t make it easier. I have had the Hot Mess veggie burger, but I’ve also ordered the Harlem Classic with beef, the cookies & cream milkshake, and sweet potato cheesecake. And I’d do it again. And again.

67 Orange Street

Founder and Owner Karl Franz Williams established 67 Orange as a tribute to Almacks, a 1840s speakeasy and one of the first Black owned and operated bars in New York City. They are mostly known for their creative cocktails, but their small plates are just as enticing.

I ordered Brussel sprouts with a fig balsamic reduction (to be honest, the first bite had me thinking it was BBQ sauce which made this Kansas City girl very happy) and lobster mac & cheese. So far, 67 Orange Street has the best seafood mac & cheese I’ve eaten in NYC, but keep reading for my favorite mac & cheese. And if the in-person ambiance is half as good as the food I had delivered, I will quickly make this my happy hour go-to spot when it’s safe to do so.

Red Rooster

Any Google search of Black-owned restaurants in NYC will surely pull up Red Rooster, so I’d had this spot on my list long before I moved to New York, but never made it. The restaurant also includes Ginny’s Supper Club, a lounge and usual spot for live music performances before the pandemic. They also regularly support and highlight NYC-based artists in their restaurant.

I ordered the Bucatini Piccadilly with a side of mac & greens. That’s not a typo. I said mac & greens, not mac & cheese. And yes, this is my favorite mac & cheese in NYC I hinted at before. It has the comfort of a mac & cheese, but with a little less guilt because collard greens were included. That basically counts as a salad, right? *Googles what vitamins are in collard greens* Rarely do I call mac & cheese perfect (because I respect my mama), but this was perfection.

Harlem Biscuit Company

Harlem Biscuit Company was the vision of Melvin Johnson, or Chef Boots. He has described the difficulty of sticking to his roots––originally taught by his grandmother before formal culinary training––in an ever-evolving culinary world. But Chef Boots has found a niche with Harlem Biscuit Company, which specializes in its namesake––biscuits! They have a selection of biscuit sandwiches, including the classic bacon, egg, and cheese (Bodega) and the eclectic Josephine, a crabcake (yes, on a biscuit), with arugula and aioli.

I had a sweet tooth when I stumbled across the restaurant on Seamless and ordered the Ruby D—strawberry shortcake, but on a biscuit. It was inhaled within 5 minutes while lounging in bed one Sunday afternoon. Delicious is an understatement. It’s simmered in brown sugar, cinnamon, and bourbon––which brought enough joy to someone who drinks her bourbon neat, but subtle enough for someone who may not be a fan of dark liquor.

Melba’s

Melba’s opened in 2005 and was one of the first restaurants I ordered from when I moved. It’s fitting that their website proclaims how the restaurant is like “coming home for dinner, whenever you’re away from home.” I have ordered the fried catfish and eggnog waffle at least 10 times through Seamless since I moved here, so a home away from home, or at least my old home, is exactly how I’d describe Melba’s.

My only warning is the red sangria: it is delicious and sneaky; don’t become a casualty! Two friends and I took a sip of our sangrias one August evening, nodded our heads, set the drinks down, and collectively agreed we would wait until our food came.

Whether you live in Charleston or it’s your first time visiting the beautiful coastal city, there are tons of ways to pass the time. Charleston is one of the South’s many coastal cities where doing nothing but enjoying sitting on a porch with an ice-cold beverage in the sunshine is totally a worthwhile way to see the city.

That’s certainly how my friends and I enjoy spending some time when I visit them in their beautiful hometown. Eventually, we head out to find a comfortable patio at a bar or restaurant to catch up as the day wears on. Though the highlight reel like shopping along King Street or visiting the Angel oak tree is essential to any first visit, there are some lesser-known unique things to do in Charleston. From chowing down on local seafood to walking through the quiet Lowcountry landscapes, these Holy City activities are both classic and authentic. By the time you’re done, you’ll feel like a local yourself. 

6 Unique Things to Do in Charleston, SC

1. Find an oyster roast

While any kind seafood is always delicious in Charleston, the city is well-known for its oysters. You can enjoy them any time of the year at the city’s restaurants. However, if you are lucky enough to find yourself in the city during the winter months, try to find an oyster roast to attend. Similar to a Lowcountry boil spilled out over newspaper on the tabletop, attending an oyster roast is as close to experiencing Charleston’s seafood culture as you can get without throwing your own oyster roast or joining the harvest for a day. Between November and February, oyster roasts take place as events as well as at local restaurants. Even those who do not enjoy seafood will find these lively social gatherings filled with live music and cold beer to be great fun. As a vegetarian, I still love attending an oyster roast because the simple yet congenial scene of music and cold drinks to close out a sunny day among friends couldn’t get any better.  

2. Take a Gullah-Geechee tour

The Gullah-Geechee people are the direct descendants of the slaves who were forcibly brough to the shores of South Carolina. While it’s still possible to tour the plantations in and around Charleston, a Gullah-Geechee tour is a far more interesting historical account from a different perspective. The tour guide, Godfrey, is a Gullah historian who lends insight to the ancient culture and history of the Gullah-Geechee. The authentic tours are educational and well worth taking to understand Charleston’s history.

3. Visit Charleston City Market

The Charleston City Market dates to the 1790s and is part of the city’s historic district. Today, the market is a hub for local artists who made certified authentic Charleston goods. There are vendors both during the Day Market and the Night Market, which takes place on Fridays and Saturdays, so it’s worth strolling through more than once. Even when the market is closed, walking through the green, empty stalls of the market at night on the way back to your hotel can be thrilling. To me, it’s like strolling through time and history. Though there are all kinds of art ranging from sculptures to paintings, the item of note that brings most people to the market are the sweetgrass baskets. 

Sweetgrass baskets have been a signature item in Charleston for more than 300 years. They were first made for the rice harvest on plantations, but now there are 50 resident Gullah artists who weave the bulrush marshgrass into mesmerizing designs. Some are even held in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. 

4. Explore the landscape by foot

While the pastel town houses of Charleston are something to see, the natural landscape of the Lowcountry is stunning and worth seeking out. Though many opt to walk, run, or ride a rental bike over the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge to see beautiful views of the city, you can also get out of town to more easily get in touch with nature. While I love cycling over the bridge, it’s also nice to get out and away from the crowds. That’s why visiting the outlying parks and forests surrounding Charleston are well worth the trip. 

There are beautiful stretches of water and Lowcountry pine forests in the parks that surround Charleston such as Palmetto Islands Park. However, Francis Marion and Sumter National Forest provides ample nature trails.

5. Enjoy a beach day 

Few things are better than enjoying a beach day on Folly Island. It’s a local favorite thanks to its wide, expansive beaches. Take a chair and kick back with a cooler of snacks and drinks. The waves accessible by the beach at the end of Ashley Avenue, known as “the Washout,” are perfect for surfing if you prefer to get active. Paddleboarding the waterways is also possible. 

Personally, there’s a spin on a day at the beach that I love. While it’s possible to rent a kayak during the day, turning a beach day into a beach night can be so much fun. I like taking a full moon kayak tour for an unusual twist to your time at the beach and on the water. It’s a great way to round out a sun-filled day. Plan ahead if you plan to book a tour instead of simply rent a kayak or paddleboard for self-guided time on the water during the day (or night)!

6. Visit Dock Street Theatre

Dock Street Theatre was built and opened in 1809 making it a stunning historic venue in the French Quarter. The intimate setting provides a wonderful experience for the audience, though the architecture itself is reason enough to visit. The elegant theatre is outfitted with impressive woodcarvings, wrought iron, and a cobblestone courtyard. 

Those seeking entertainment will likely love anything that is being presented with performances ranging from musicals to dramas. Check their website in advance for tickets to ensure you can attend a performance on the night that you prefer. There are also other events such as educational programs for kids and wine fundraisers that benefit both the theatre and local wine shops.

Puerto Vallarta became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico for one very good reason, the gorgeous beaches that ring the giant cove of Bahia de Banderas. There is a beach here for every personality, travel style, and mood. Even if you prefer less-touristy destinations, you can escape the city crowds in many of the tucked away beaches that are still within about 30 minutes of the city. Use this Puerto Vallarta beach guide to plan out your next trip to this vacation destination.

The Best Beaches in Puerto Vallarta

Playa el Salado

In the north of the city in the resort district or Marina Vallarta, you’ll find Playa el Salado, a Puerto Vallarta beach with plenty of activities. You can rent watersports equipment like kayaks, jet skis and more. You’ll also find the Marina Vallarta golf course nearby, and a turtle release program a few minutes down the beach. Playa el Salado is a great beach to keep yourself busy and find lots of restaurants and shopping.

Playa los Camarones

A little further south, in the hotel zone, Playa los Camarones is a beautiful long beach. Even though this beach is in a busy tourist district, it’s location is a bit tucked away and you’ll find a quiet place to relax. The calm water also makes it an ideal place for swimming.

Playa Olas Altas

Playa Olas Altas is the place to go for people watching, dining and nightlife. This beach straddles the Downtown and Romantic Zone regions, and has the famous malecon – a long and wide boardwalk to stroll. This is a great place to walk around sunset to take in the sights, enjoy the setting sun, and stop for a cocktail or cold beer. 

Playa Los Muertos

Playa Los Muertos is the stretch of beach just south of Playa Olas Altas. Though this beach can get crowded, there are many restaurants and beach clubs to pull up a chair. The water here is also great for a swim with a view of the picturesque Playa Los Muertos Pier. This high energy beach is also great for dining and nightlife.

Playa Conchas Chinas

Playa Conchas Chinas is a gorgeous beach that you won’t believe is only a 5 minute drive from downtown Puerto Vallarta. It’s filled with large rock formations that create lots of nooks to explore and have time to yourself. The blue/turquoise water and the gleaming sand make this a very picturesque beach.

Playa Mismaloya

This beach is famous for being a filming spot for the movie “Night of the Iguana”, the 1960s film that made Puerto Vallarta world famous. Playa Mismaloya is actually a small village that is a calm port. This is an ideal place to make a snorkel or diving excursion by boat to the nearby Los Arcos, large rock formations with arch features that are teaming with wildlife.

Playa Colomitos

Playa Colomitos is a tiny cove beach that looks like it’s straight out of a postcard. You can reach this beach by boat from Boca de Tomatlan, or by a short hike from the same village. The small cove is surrounded on all sides by tall cliffs, and the bright turquoise water laps on the small strip of sand. There are no services here, so you’ll want to be sure to bring your own water or snacks.

Las Animas

Playa las Animas is another remote beach that can be reached by boat, or by a longer hike from Boca de Tomatlan. This is a popular beach to visit to spend the day swimming, sunning and eating. There are a few restaurants here to have a meal or a drink so you can spend a whole day or afternoon. The fine sand and the clear water make this an ideal place to swim and relax.

Yelapa

Yelapa is a small town and beach that is so remote, it can only be reached by boat. You can take a boat here from the Playa los Muertos pier or from the town of Boca de Tomatlan. After a 30 minute boat ride from Los Muertos, you’ll find yourself in a hidden paradise. This deep cove beach is surrounded by dense jungle and rolling hills that climb up into mountains behind. A river divides the beach in half, and the small town with pedestrian streets climbs up the hill. This is truly a place to disconnect and enjoy nature. There is a beautiful waterfall within the town to visit, as well as one nearby that you can hike to. You can take a day trip here from Puerto Vallarta, or stay for a few days to get away from it all.

Punta Mita

Punta Mita is a town about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta that is at the tip of a point, so you’ll be surrounded by water on three sides. This town is home to many luxurious resorts and golf courses. The beaches and water are immaculate and the views are sweeping. 

Sayulita

Sayulita is also north of Puerto Vallarta, but is a town with a barefoot, laidback vibe. This beach destination became popular as a great surf spot, but since has attracted artists, creatives, and others looking for a relaxed experience. There is also a growing nightlife scene here, so you can relax by day and party by night.

Looking for the best wineries in Willamette Valley, Oregon. Here’s a complete guide below!

Oregon might be most known for its proximity to beautiful National forests and scenic waterfalls, but for wine enthusiasts Oregon’s reputation for Pinot Noir is on the same level. There are around 700 wineries in the Willamette Valley alone, which can be a little intimidating when you want to plan a wine tasting tour or you’re just passing through the area.

I come from a family of avid wine tasters and my girlfriend is in the wine industry. Suffice to say, I drink a lot of wine! I still may not be able to tell you all the complex flavors that make up whatever I’m drinking, but I can tell you what wineries have stood out to me based on the experience I had tasting there, the atmosphere of the space and the feelings I had trying each wine.

Wine tasting is already pretty subjective, and even if a vineyard has a lot of accolades, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be the right fit for you. Each winery has a different experience to offer and it all depends on what you’re looking for. (And if you don’t actually know what you’re looking for, there’s a place for that too.)

A Guide to the Best Wineries in Willamette Valley

Argyle Winery

Bubbles don’t just have to be for special occasions. At Argyle, you can get a flight of only sparkling wines that includes whites and rosés, as well as offer a variety of flavor profiles from dry, crisp and floral.

Argyle was founded with sparkling in mind. In 1987, vintner Rollin Soles believed the valley would be ideal for producing these delectable bubbles, and since then they have expanded to include Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Rieslings in their repertoire. So, if not everyone in your party is feeling sparkling, that isn’t the only option.

Durant Vineyards

Although wine is just one facet of Durant Red Ridge Farms, the history behind it is extensive. The Durant family was among the first in Oregon to start growing wine grapes in 1973. For almost 50 years after, the farm has expanded to include an olive mill, plant nursery, gardens, hiking trail, overnight lodging and a gift shop. Truly, a visit to Durant could be it’s own weekend excursion.

The wines are good and the olive oil is even better. There are tastings available for both, either together or separate and the gift shop makes it hard to leave without taking a bit of Durant home with you. (I know I have.)

Fairsing Vineyard

The name “Fairsing” comes from ancient Gaelic, meaning bountiful. The property is a mix of ridges, forest and streams with the tasting room atop of the hill overlooking the valley and forest below. The panoramic view is breathtaking and makes a great photo opp. Even the tasting room is inspired by Owners Mary Ann and Mike McNally’s Celtic roots, including a seven circuit labyrinth.

As for the wines, Fairsing flights offer a deeper dive into Oregon’s Pinot Noir, making it a great location to experience the beauty and taste that Willamette Valley has to showcase.

Bells Up Winery

Music lovers will especially enjoy the theme of this winery. Bells Up refers to the lifting of the French horn “bells” to project sound during an intense moment in classical music. Winemaker and owner Dave Specter played French horn when he was younger and calls the winery his “Bells up” moment.

That passion is obvious, especially because each tasting experience is hosted by Specter. It’s a truly unique opportunity to have a one-on-one interaction with the wine maker. Even if you’re a wine novice, Specter takes the intimidation out of learning what is in the glass.

Remy Wines

best for LGBTQ+ representation

In being part of the queer community, it’s important for me to be able to support LGBTQ+ businesses. Remy Wines is one of the Willamette Valley’s out winemakers who knew she wanted to be a winemaker since she was eight years old and worked in wine since she was 14.

Remy’s Wines are considered to be made in the old world Italian style. She has two labels, both with gorgeous, sapphic artwork that makes the bottles as good to look at as they are to drink! One of them, The Three Wives Wines, is based off an old family story of mistaken identity, which I recommend asking about on your visit.

Stoller Family Estate

For those who aren’t sure exactly what they want, but are still looking for a fun and special experience, Stoller Family Estate has you covered. The Stoller brand is one of the best known in the state, and is the best place to go if you want options.

There are multiple tasting flights, including their classic Stoller tasting, which ranges from Chardonnay to Pinot Noirs; History tasting, which highlights some of the oldest vineyards in the region; Gastronomic Tasting, which curates food and wine pairings; and a library tasting of their most exclusive wines. I went with the classic tasting, and the range of their wine brands gave me a full impression of how extensive their collection is.

Looking for the best beaches on Long Island? Check out this post from local, Jenna!

Long Island is known for a few things: high property taxes, Billy Joel, Amy Fisher… and great beaches. As a kid, I built sandcastles all over the best beaches on Long Island, and as an adult, I found the ones with live music and appetizers at sunset. The south shore beaches are the ones you want if you’re a fan of smooth sand; the north shore ones are primarily rocky. Still pretty, but a lot harder to walk on barefoot.

Below are some of my favorites!

Best Beaches on Long Island

Cooper’s Beach

268 Meadow Lane, Southampton, NY 11968

You haven’t experienced a sunset until you’ve experienced it at Cooper’s Beach. Serenity and beauty abound at this well-maintained 7-mile-long stretch of beach in the Hamptons with soft, fine white sand and clean water. The $50 daily parking fee (yes, not a typo!) before 5 p.m. is a deterrent for many visitors, though, so it’s not usually overcrowded. It’s consistently ranked one of the best beaches in the entire country, so they get away with pricing it like you’re going to a theme park. It faces the Atlantic Ocean and the waves can get rough. You can rent chairs and umbrellas and buy whatever you need at the on-site store and upscale snack bar. For a sneak peek, check out their webcam.

Jones Beach

2400 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, NY 11793

Probably the most famous Long Island beach, Jones Beach has been the site of big concerts and events every summer (air shows, parades, fireworks) and light shows for the winter holidays. This is a great spot if you’re looking for activity—biking on the boardwalks, surfing, paddle boarding, fishing or crabbing, and organized nature walks. Zach’s Bay is the area to hit up if you’re looking for calm water to swim with children. There’s also a new adventure park (WildPlay) with ziplines and an aerial rope obstacle course for adults and kids.

It’s 6.5 miles long, so while it’s always crowded in nice weather, you can still find places to stake out your own spot.

Cherry Grove Bayview Walk

Cherry Grove, NY 11782

This is the longtime hot spot for LGBTQ+ beachgoers on Fire Island—it’s been known as a safe haven since the 1940s. The only way to get there is by ferry (or water taxi or private boat). It’s not officially a nudist beach, but it’s clothing optional and not for those who get freaked out easily. While 2,000-ish people live there over the summer, only 20 live there year-round—it’s really just a summer destination, heavy on partying and events like drag shows. Like the rest of Fire Island, it’s all very walkable or bike-able. You don’t have to be gay to go there, but you’re expected to be an ally. Catch a sneak peek here.

Robert Moses Beach

600 Robert Moses State Parkway, Babylon, NY 11702

This is another wildly popular beach that’s just about five miles long and accessible by car or train (get off at the Babylon station). Different fields have different vibes and activities: there are areas for family picnics, surfing, volleyball, fishing and crabbing off piers, boating, nature walks, swimming, and playgrounds. You can walk to the Fire Island Lighthouse from here (Field 5 is the closest), and spot lots of wildlife along the way. It’s $10 for parking.

Venetian Shores

850 Venetian Blvd., Lindenhurst, NY 11757

If live music is what you’re after, Venetian Shores has it… every night! Well, on season, of course. It’s open to non-residents of Babylon after 5 pm. In the summertime, this little beach gets pretty crowded, so you may have to drive around a while to wait for a parking space to open up as the family-friendly daytime crowd thins and the adults take over at night. There’s a new little restaurant, Katch, that offers real food and drinks (not just the standard hot dogs and burgers at many other beach stands).

Smith Point County Park

1 William Floyd Pkwy, Shirley, NY 11967

Smith Point is a Fire Island barrier beach and park, but you don’t need to take a ferry to get there—there’s a bridge on the William Floyd Parkway that will lead you right to it. It’s a popular place for tent and RV camping (you need reservations, sometimes far in advance, and full hook-up sites go within minutes of release at the start of the season). This is a clean, white sand beach that has ocean and bay areas, a tiki bar, live entertainment, a boardwalk, a playground, and an area where dogs are allowed. Lifeguards are plentiful and on top of things. There’s also an outer beach area where off-road four-wheeling is allowed with permit. Campers get their own private stretch of beach, which is almost always less crowded than the main beach. Be aware that non-residents pay $18 parking fees before 5:00.

Ditch Plains

Montauk Peninsula, Montauk, NY 11954

This is the spot for early morning surfing and boogie boarding, and local businesses offer lessons and equipment for rent. You can’t park here without an East Hampton Village parking permit, though (you will get an expensive ticket), so you either need to Uber/Lyft/taxi your way in, or walk from a nearby private lot. Bring a jacket in case it gets windy.

Ocean Beach Park

Nevada Avenue, Long Beach, NY 11561

Nassau County’s Long Beach is known as “the city by the sea.” Its trademark beach is four miles long, with a 2.2-mile boardwalk and all kinds of things to do: fishing, biking, swimming, surfing (in designated areas), and playground…ing. There are also several good places to eat (most notably, lots of pizza), though not many shops. It’s an easy commute by train from New York City and has a completely opposite vibe: it’s quaint and slow-paced, and very clean. Day passes are $15 per person for non-residents.

Wondering how to spend an active weekend in Little Rock, Arkansas? Check out this guide!

I arrived in Little Rock the same way many of my husband’s coworkers did … on orders. As a military spouse, the idea of moving from my rural German home to Central Arkansas gave me preemptive bouts of culture shock. I had lived in the South before, but after spending three years overseas, I had grown very accustomed to a European pace of riding my bike to the grocery store, settling in for pastries and coffee in my local kaffeeshop, and getting lost on scenic trails through lush forests. I prepared myself for what I assumed would likely be a big change, but quickly found myself settling back into that familiar European pace as I explored the sidewalks, cafes, and bike-friendly streets of my new hometown.

Little Rock was actually discovered by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe, who named the town “La Petite Roche” after finding a small rock formation on the banks of the Arkansas River. The rock formation remains today, as does that same pioneering spirit with which the city was founded. Today Little Rock has a vibrant arts culture where locally-owned businesses thrive and creativity is nourished through quirky festivals and city-wide celebrations. Spend a weekend exploring Little Rock’s hottest spots, from the nightly backyard parties at a railyard-turned food truck park to bike-in breweries and a boutique shop selling handcrafted goods and snarky sundries.

Where to Stay

Downtown Little Rock is the heartbeat of the city, home to the Quapaw Historic Quarter, the SoMa (South of Main) entertainment district, and the exciting River Market District. It’s also home to the city’s most impressive accommodations at The Capital Hotel. This luxury hotel first opened in 1870. Rumor has it that the elevator was built to accommodate President Ulysses S. Grant’s horse, and local legends claim there was one time when all 135-members of the Arkansas State Legislature rode to the top floor together. While there’s no proof either claim is true, I can say with absolute certainty that there’s plenty of room to nail an awesome cartwheel if you find yourself in there alone.

How to Spend the Weekend in Little Rock

Saturday

Start the morning with a coffee at Fidel & Co. Coffee Roasters, where this trendy specialty coffee shop roasts their own single origin coffees and serves them alongside house-made pastries, house-made granola, and healthy salads and sandwiches. If you go with their nitrogen-infused ice coffee, order it black, and don’t forget to ask for extra homemade za’atar seasoning on top of your house-made bagel to fuel your day with just the right spice.

From there it’s about a 15-minute walk along a pedestrian pathway past Heifer International’s Urban Farm and the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum to the River Market, where you can buy fresh flowers and vegetables or meet with the artisans at the Saturday Farmer’s Market. Many of the city’s best events and festivals happen at the River Market—including the World Cheese Dip Championship.

It’s also where you can rent a bike from Rock Town River Outfitters to check out the famous bike trails in, and around, the city. Mountain biking is a huge deal in Arkansas, and Little Rock’s series of urban trails makes it easy to get a taste of the trails … and a taste of the town. Ride 8 miles along the Arkansas River Trail to the Big Dam Bridge (yes, the actual name!), before heading back into town along the trail to grab a well-earned taco at The Fold: Botanas & Bar. The restaurant is inside a renovated filling station from the 1960s, and the décor is as fresh as the hand-pressed cocktails they serve.

From there, head to the Stifft’s Station Historic District to check out the street art and boutique shops. Stifft Station Gifts sells goods from local artists and is one of the only places in town you can find pieces from snarky local jewelry maker Bang Up Betty, who has made pieces for Julianne Moore, Janelle Monae, and more. Grab a beer at Stone’s Throw Brewing’s newest taproom before heading back out to wander through the outdoor sculpture garden at Riverfront Park.

As the sun goes down the bridges of Little Rock light up, and it’s a sight best seen from a well-positioned park bench at the riverfront. Grab a seat at The Capital Bar & Grill for cocktails to try what will likely be the best Moscow Mule of your life, and, do yourself a favor and order two appetizers, the pimento cheese and the spiced pecans. You’ll thank me later. [Pro tip: They’ll sell you a bag of pecans to-go if you ask!]

Walk or drive your way over to The Railyard to end your day with a laid-back backyard party of food trucks, live music, and lawn games. Cross your fingers for an appearance from Le Pops food truck so you can try the gourmet palleta-style ice lollies made from local ingredients.

Sunday

Sneak out of the city a bit this morning to drive—or take the vintage trolly (currently not running due to Covid-19)—over to the up-and-coming Argenta Arts District in North Little Rock for a cup of freshly roasted coffee at the original Mugs Café or save your caffeine for after a free-spirited yoga class at Blue Yoga NYLA. This award-winning studio is set inside an abandoned school building in North Little Rock, and you’ll need to park in the back lot to enter this truly special space.

Head back across the river for a morning hike. The trails at Allsopp Park are deceptively challenging as they weave through this urban park, but the best trails in Little Rock are found at Pinnacle State Park. Hike the scenic 2.2-mile Rattlesnake Ridge trail or tackle the grueling 1.5-mile vertical Pinnacle Mountain West Summit trail to reach the summit of this 1,011-foot mountain.

After a long morning of hiking, you’ll have earned a seat for the lavish brunch at Lost Forty Brewing. Brunch is served all day on Sundays, from 10AM-9PM, so no need to rush down from the mountain early!

Use the afternoon to check out some of the amazing Civil Rights sites in the city by taking a guided tour of Little Rock’s Central High School. This National Historic Site is where nine black high school students sought an education in an all-white high school following the Brown v. Board of Education decisions of 1954. Only three of those students graduated from Central High School, and their stories of resilience and determination continue to inspire millions.

Swap happy hour with ice cream hour with a hand-crafted cone at Loblolly Creamery in the SoMa district. Their flavors are inspired by local ingredients, and favorites include Arkansas Heirloom Pumpkin Fromage Blanc and Dunbar Gardens Fresh Lavender.

Stroll through the Bernice Garden to walk off your sugar rush before heading to dinner across the street at The Root Café. This unpretentious farm-to-table restaurant has been featured on The Food Network for their seasonally rotating menu that highlights Arkansas ingredients and local brews. End the night with a night cap at 109 & Co. cocktail club, located adjacent to The Capital Hotel, before hopping back in bed to start recovering from your exciting weekend in Little Rock.

Whether you plan to enjoy local Asian-influenced cuisine, people watch in a café, or head out into the mountains or onto the ocean, I have a list of recommendations for where to stay in Vancouver.

My parents immigrated to Vancouver as children and have lived here ever since. Some of my earliest memories are going nature walks, museum visits, and hikes in this beautiful city. Being of Taiwanese descent, finding the best places for Asian food has been a lifelong adventure that I continue to take part in (with enthusiasm, might I add). As a lover of music and dance, the city provides amazing opportunities for both free festivals and paid concerts regardless of the time of year you visit.

Vancouver is split up into multiple neighborhoods, each with their distinct charm and flavor. I’ll provide a simple explanation of each neighborhood’s personality prior to listing accommodation.

Note that Richmond, while not part of Vancouver, provides proximity to our main airport (YVR) and thus has been included in this post.

Where to Stay in Richmond

Richmond provides easy access to Vancouver International Airport, in addition to some of the best Asian cuisine in the region. Whether you have an early morning flight to catch and don’t feel like venturing far, or are a huge foodie and want to make meals the focal point of your trip, Richmond offers the best of both worlds.

One can easily access beautiful walks along the ocean and fuel up afterwards with dim sum, dumplings, noodles, and bubble tea abound.

Sights of interest include the historic fishing village of Steveston, the Olympic Oval, and Aberdeen Centre – a mall fusing Eastern and Western shops with an outstanding food court full of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Hong Kong cuisine.

West Side – Kitsilano and Point Grey/UBC

Kitsilano and Point Grey are the western-most part of Vancouver (not downtown Vancouver). Vanier Park, Kits Beach, and Spanish Banks as popular enjoyable hangout spots year-round (Bonus: lots of dogs).

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver Campus is situated in Point Grey and makes for a great day trip to explore the university buildings, gardens, Wreck Beach, Beatty Biodiversity Museum and the Museum of Anthropology.

Granville Island

Once housing factories, warehouses, and mills, many of these old buildings have been converted into restaurants, artisan studios, and performance venues. The 4 official districts of the downtown core are Yaletown, Gastown, Vancouver Downtown, and the West End; but I will break the area down further along with some personally recommendations. While there are no accommodation spaces in Gastown, one can find tourist shops, cobblestone streets, and the famous steam clock. Gastown is easily walkable from Coal Harbour.

Coal Harbour/Waterfront

As you probably guessed by its name, this once-former shipyard is where you can see docking cruise ships alongside a gorgeous waterfront promenade. The sight of the Olympic Flame and the Convention Centre, a walk through this district is a surprisingly calm break from the hustle and bustle of the middle of downtown. Local tip: Stop by Soirette Pastry Boutique for freshly baked goodies and macarons.

Yaletown

Yaletown is dominated by waterfront parks and restaurant patios. The Roundhouse Community Centre is the sight of the first engine used in a transcontinental passenger train (Yaletown was once the end of the line for the Canadian Pacific Railway). Old warehouses have been converted into cozy restaurants where flocks of people descend for post-work happy hour drinks. Local tip: Minami is a splurge-worthy sushi restaurant that specializes in aburi (flame-seared pressed sushi). For brunch lovers OEB is a must-visit.

West End

The West End is the location of choice for easy access to beaches, restaurants, and Stanley Park (our version of Central Park). English bay is one of our most popular beaches, and also where you can watch the Celebration of Light Fireworks competition in July and August. Stanley Park provides opportunities to visit the Vancouver Aquarium, bike the seawall, and enjoy time in nature while still being close to the city.

Where to Stay in North Vancouver

Lonsdale

Technically part of North Vancouver, Lonsdale is separated from the Vancouver downtown by a ride on the SeaBus. Once a shipyard, Lonsdale boasts a number of trendy restaurants and pubs, in addition to waterfront views. The Quay itself is host to many independent businesses. North Vancouver is where you want to stay for convenient access to recreational activities such as hiking and mountain-biking in the summer, and skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

While Vancouver downtown remains the focal point of a lot of vacations, I highly recommend exploring outside the downtown core to really experience the city in all its glory. I’m Kayley and I am a teacher and travel enthusiast living in Sweden with my husband. A few summers ago, some friends and I decided to leave the boys at home and go on a girls’ trip. We had a few requirements – sun, sea and adventure! With  4 teachers, an 8 week summer break ahead of us, and Europe at our fingertips, it wasn’t hard to come up with the PERFECT trip. Here I’ll share with you our Croatia Itinerary for 10 days – featuring cute airbnbs, cliff jumping adventures and even a cute convertible! For the ultimate summer trip, we’ve got you covered!

Tips for Planning Your Croatia Itinerary

Money

Croatia uses the Croatian Kuna (1 USD = 7 HRK)

Flying In & Out

We flew directly from Stockholm into Dubrovnik Airport, but you could fly into one of its other international airports like Split or Rijeka International Airport. Dubrovnik International Airport is located just 15km from the city, making it super convenient to get to Old Town. Dubrovnik airport offers multiple airport buses for about €5, stopping both in the Old Town and at the main bus station at Gruž harbour. The buses depart 30 minutes after every flight arrival. The website says you can buy tickets from the driver, but when we arrived and tried to get on, he didn’t have any tickets so we had to run back inside to draw cash from an ATM and buy tickets from the booth just inside. 

Packing for Croatia

Croatia is really hot and humid over June and July, their summer season. For the most part you’ll only need shorts and tank tops or t-shirts. I packed a comfy maxi dress which was great over sunburn. I recommend packing a pair of trainers, especially if you’re planning on walking down to odysseus caves and doing any hikes (which I highly recommend). Other than that a pair of comfortable/pretty sandals will double up as daily beach shoes as well as evening wear. 

How to Get Around

Croatia has multiple modes of transportation, so getting around is fairly easy. For this 10 day Croatia itinerary we utilized ferries, a few buses, Ubers and rented both a car and a scooter. Croatia has a state run ferry company – Jadrolinija, which is reliable and efficient but can be rather difficult to figure out. I would suggest planning your route first, checking ferry schedules and only then booking accommodation. That being said, we booked all our ferry tickets online before the trip, except for the first one from Dubrovnik to Mjlet. We just headed to the ferry terminal early in the morning to get tickets for that day. 

Buses are also very common and fairly inexpensive. They provide beautiful scenery especially if traveling along the coast. Don’t expect the bus driver to speak English or be very friendly. Also be aware that if your bag doesn’t fit into the overhead, they charge you cash to put it in the hold. 

How to Spend 10 Days in Croatia

In this Croatia itinerary we stuck to the coast and hopped around quite a bit, visiting a few islands with Croatia’s extensive ferry network. We started in Dubrovnik, visited 4 different islands and then ventured back onto the mainland at Split. This is how our 10 day Croatia Itinerary looked: 

• Dubrovnik: 1 Night
• Mljet: 1 Night
• Korcula: 2 Nights
• Hvar: 2 Nights
• Bol: 2 Nights
• Split: 1 Night

Day 1: Arrive in Dubrovnik

We arrived in Dubrovnik in the evening and chose only to spend one night there. Living in Europe we can often find cheap flights to main cities over random weekends and so we like to get out of the more touristy places when we have the extra time. We stayed in a little hostel called Anchi Guesthouse which was just a one or two minute walk from the main bus station, and about 5 minutes away from the ferry port that we would be using to get to the islands. 

Day 2: Caves and National Parks on Mjlet

We got up early in the morning to go get tickets for the first ferry of the day before returning to pack our things. Along the way, we grabbed burek for breakfast. These cheese or meat pastries became a staple breakfast each morning while we were on route to a new adventure!

The ferry departs from port Gruz in Dubrovnik at 9:15 AM and takes about an hour to get to Mjlet (Sobra port). Our plan was to rent 2 scooters for about €27 a day from the port, but as we arrived something more thrilling caught our eyes! Maybe it was the excitement of the first day of our girls trip but something just screamed girls trip when we caught sight of a beautiful turquoise Fiat soft-top.

Rent a Car or Scooter

Mini brum has an office right at the port, and gave us such friendly service and a well marked map with great advice and recommendations! It was a good thing that all the scooters were already rented so our decision was made as we stuffed our backpacks into the back and hopped in!

I recommend renting some sort of vehicle in Mljet as there is no public transportation on the island. It is an incredibly beautiful island, so you’ll want to be able to explore all over! My only regret this trip is that we didn’t spend more time here.

Mljet is off the coast and probably my favourite part of our 10-day itinerary in Croatia. The whole western third of the island is the National Park which hosts two salt water lakes and an island with a church!

Check in to Villa Victor

We checked in early to our gorgeous Airbnb, Villa Victor, and chatted with our super friendly hosts before heading to a small beach cove down the street for the morning. In the afternoon we drove through to the national park. There is an entry fee of 90.00kn per person, or 50.00kn with a valid student card.

Check out the Island of Santa Maria

You can also find a little boat that runs to the island of Santa Maria every 30 minutes or so. We hopped onto that and took a walk around the island and had a little swim in the lake before taking a boat to the next lake drop off spot. The two salt water lakes are interconnected and when the tide changes you’re able to float from the big lake into the small one. Lots of fun!

Go cliff jumping at the Odysseus Caves

Another activity I highly recommend is visiting Odysseus Caves. We went fairly early in the morning in the hopes to avoid the heat and crowds. The heat we couldn’t escape, but the crowds weren’t too bad. The hike down takes about 30 minutes, but depending on your fitness and age, I would give yourself a little more time. Going down wasn’t too bad, but coming back up around midday was quite a climb!

You can easily park along the road by the grocery store, Tommy’s, and then follow the sign board to the path that leads down to the sea. Navigating the cliffs can be a bit treacherous so it’s a good idea to have some sturdy shoes for the hike.

Once on the cliffs, go jump off one into the water! I only managed the lower level which was thrilling enough for me but so cool to swim into the caves and see the sun shining into the cave and reflecting the most magnificent blues and greens! 

We spent the day driving around to other beaches and enjoying local food delights like cevapi, a hand rolled, caseless meat sausage, and some more Adriatic beers. The afternoon saw us picking up our bags from Victor Villa, having a last drink with our wonderful hosts and getting the ferry to the next island on our Croatia itinerary – Korčula. 

Days 3 & 4: Wine Tasting and Cycling Tours in Korčula

We arrived in Korčula in the late afternoon and easily found a taxi to our accommodation, another sweet little Airbnb in Medvinjak. Medvinjak is located on the north-eastern “corner” of the island. It was close enough to walk to the main town, but with backpacks and late afternoon thirst, we opted for a taxi instead. After settling in, we took a walk into town and had a lovely dinner together in one of the many cozy, alleyway restaurants. 

We got going early-ish the next morning to enjoy a full day outdoors in the sunshine. We rented bicycles from one of the many rental stores in town and rode across the island to Lumbarda, a small wine region on the southern coast. The ride to the beach is about 8km, with one big hill to get up and over. I cycle everyday to commute, so I am not unfamiliar with the exercise, but it was a bit daunting on the main road section – the hill requires quite a bit of work!

It just made the swim in the ocean a very well deserved reward! We spent the morning popping into different beaches, swimming, tanning, rehydrating and replenishing energy levels with snacks (like more cevapi) at the beachside restaurants. While the beaches were pretty packed, they had a small town, local feel (some more than others). 

On our way back to Korcula, we got waylaid by all the little wine farms, and couldn’t resist stopping in for a little taste. This area is home to the special little grapes that are used to make Grk wine – just one of the 7 wine producers that make Grk here. The charming winemaker’s wife served us and gave us such interesting information and a real value wine-tasting of 3 wines and grappa. The wine buzz may have given us the extra oomph to get going back up the hill and into Korcula. 

Being around during one of the many yacht weeks, the evening has the option to turn pretty wild, with many of the yachts docking at different ports each evening. Some of us chose to go out and join in the buzz, while others chose to have a chill night in. Needless to say, we had a slow morning the next day, and took a ferry at midday to the next island on our list – Hvar. 

Days 5 & 6: Spanish Fortress and Night Life in Hvar

Hvar is a beautiful little island, next on our trip and a popular tourist spot due to its beautiful fortress, 13th century walls and abundance of coastal bars, clubs and hotspots. The town square is right on the water, where you can view the fortress climbing up above you and spend hours watching people in the sunshine. There are little coves and bays to swim in all around the island, including along the main promenade and port. Some of these are just little drop offs with steps into the water. The floor of the ocean has a lot of rocks, shells and anemones so either make sure you don’t put your feet down or wear a pair of water shoes! 

One day we rented scooters and took a ride up to our friend’s cousin’s restaurant Vidikovac Levanda where we enjoyed a beautiful lunch as well as stunning views of lavender fields and high coastal roads overlooking the Adriatic Sea. 

We also ended up getting tickets to a party at the nightclub on another small island called Carpe Diem. It was one of those almost all-inclusives where you get an all-you-can-drink party boat (or in our case, the boat was too full so we had access to a bar beforehand) and then a boat ride to the nightclub. It’s not my normal cup of tea, but it was wild and definitely like something from a movie! The whole island was a nightclub – complete with a pizza slice shop at the boat pick up for your way home! 

Naturally, the next day we all had a little sleep in before packing up once again and heading to the ferry port – but not before picking up some more burek for our boat ride! 

Days 7 & 8: Beach-Hopping in Bol, Bra

We stayed in Bol while on Brac and spent a relatively chilled few days enjoying local beaches and restaurants. We spent a good few hours frying in the sun on the popular Zlatni Rat – a white pebbled peninsula of a beach. The shape of the tip is forever changing due to the currents and wind. This particular beach is packed in the summer, but has beach chairs and umbrellas as well as crystal clear waters.

My favorite beach however, was Beach Bijela Kuća, on the opposite end of Bol, past the ferry port. It is a delightfully sheltered cove, with lots of rocky platforms and sections to set up on. We enjoyed our last lunch with all four of us together at the little restaurant on the corner, Ribarska Kućica. 

I really would have liked to go up to Vidova Gora – the highest peak in the Adriatics, offering the best views of Zlatni Rat beach. The hike is accessible from Bol but is about a 5.5km hike up (11km round trip). Apparently it gets pretty technical towards the top and it’s recommended to have at least 4-5 hours to be able to spend some time enjoying the view.

At that point in our trip, the group of us were quite “adventured out” and we opted to laze on the beach rather than mission up mountains in the humidity. But, now that I’m back home I’m already planning when my husband and I can go back to do the hike!

Two of our four had a flight the next day out of Dubrovnik so we took a ferry all the way back to spend the evening in Dubrovnik. The remaining two of us spent the afternoon on the beach, before having pedicures and enjoying tapas, al fresco on our apartment patio. 

Day 9: Roman Ruins in Split

The next morning we took a ferry back to the mainland, arriving at Split. It was raining when we arrived and the ferry port was a mess with so much traffic! We got an uber to our Airbnb – a small room in a couples home. They were the sweetest family who invited us to have lunch with them and chat around the dining room table. Their son spoke English really well and my friend could speak Croatian which really helped! 

By the time we had finished lunch and chats, the sun had come out so we took a bus into town and explored the harbor front market, ogled all the super yachts and visited Kasjuni Beach – a more secluded, but still touristy, pebble/rock beach.  The beach is about a 40 minute walk along the coast or  you can hop on a bus that goes a few times an hour. We took an uber there, and a bus back. 

On the way back we stopped to walk up through a neighborhood to a viewpoint, Prva Vidilica Na Marjanu (Marjan Hill). There is a little cafe up at the top and a view of Old Town Split. If you continue further up, there are more trails and viewpoints. Unfortunately for us, the rain came down, (and our hunger came up) so we went back down and stopped in for an early dinner at a cute little restaurant terrace to hide away from the rain. 

Once the afternoon thunder shower had passed we took a walk through the old town. Almost half of the town is made up of Diocletian’s palace – the ancient Roman ruins. It makes walking through the town feel so unreal. The ruins are some of the most well-preserved from that time, and many of the shops and alleyways run right through them. I would love to come here with my husband one day –  he also loves this history stuff!

Day 10: Return to Dubrovnik

This was probably the worst part of my trip, where I felt the most anxious, but looking back I’m not sure why. Everything ran as it should have but I was stressed out about traveling the whole day on my own. It was a long day of traveling and the bus driver (on the very first leg of the journey) was mean to me so it set me off haha.

Be warned – if your bag doesn’t fit in the overhead compartment (which really only fits a handbag) you have to pay extra for it to be in the hold. I was super sad about this as I had kept the exact amount of cash on me to buy a pastry for a bus snack and instead had to use it to pay for my bag!  

But other than that, the bus ran smoothly from Split to Dubrovnik – about 4 to 6 hours depending on the route and driver etc. I would recommend taking a window seat on the right as the views over the ocean are incredible, not to mention all the little seaside towns! The route takes you through a small section of Bosnia, so there can sometimes be a little delay at the border when passports are being checked. 

The bus arrives at the main station in Dubrovnik, which is exactly where the shuttle buses to the airport depart from. I bought a ticket from the booth and hopped straight onto the airport bus. As I understand it, there are a few different companies so there should be a bus leaving fairly frequently. It works on the flight schedule – normally a bus departs 90 minutes before domestic flights and 2 hours before international flights. 

Croatia is full of so much natural beauty – from mountains to lakes and beaches. We barely made a scratch on the surface – I can’t wait to return with my husband in tow! Do you have any hidden gems that  you would include in your Croatia itinerary?

Tia founded her namesake brand to offer a beautifully designed chic line of women’s swimwear and clothing. She’s a one woman entrepreneur who sources sustainable material and has everything made locally. Last season she had a beautiful shop in Mandrem – Alchemy – shared with Fara Boutique, though next year they are not sure if they will be going ahead with the space.

Even if you haven’t made it to Goa yet, have a look at her website as she does international deliveries! If you are in Goa keep an eye and ear out for any Alchemy pop ups! Tia was one of Rachel’s best friends in Goa, so if you’ve ever wondered about what she was wearing in India, you’ve probably heard of this brand countless of times!

This amazing shop is one of my favorites in the whole of Goa. It’s the kind of shop you wish you could just buy everything. The taste and style makes you want to re-decorate your home, start again with a fresh new wardrobe, and invest all your money in jewelry. Set in a beautiful Portuguese house in Assagao, you can spend a few hours exploring the different rooms and then having a break on their comfortable swing. Products are from all around India as well as Bali and Africa and wherever else the owners have recently vacationed! Don’t miss it!

• Location: Various in North Goa

This is another home ware and fashion store with quite a few locations spread across Goa. They have beautiful locally designed and made clothing pieces. If you are having an evening out to Thalassa you can also find a Flame Store in the restaurant area.

Studio Arpora

• Location: Arpora, North Goa.

This cute studio is owned by Saffron, another friend of mine and Rachel’s. You can view some amazing art painted by Shireen Mody, the latest collection being Coconut Trees and The Friday Night Market. Saffron’s watercolor prints and originals are for sale as well as some beautiful scarves and tea towels. If you want to take a little bit of Goa back home with you, this is definitely a place to visit.

This really cool boutique can be found in South Goa just next to Patnem Beach. They have a cafe selling tasty food so make sure you stop by for some lunch and a browse of the very chic store.

This cool boutique is located in Panjim in one of the colorful streets of Fontainhas. It is sort of attached to Blue Tokai coffee shop so stop by for a coffee and to purchase some treasures. They have great clothing for both men and women, jewelry as well as great gift options.

Mermaid’s Boutique

• Location: Anjuna, North Goa

This very cool boutique is owned by Katja, a true Goa enthusiast, Katja has lived in Goa for over 25 years now and lets her personality shine through her clothes, bags and designs. Her business started 15 years ago as a small stall in the Anjuna flea market and has progressed into the beautiful shop it is today. There are lots of lovely handmade products with amazing designs you won’t find anywhere else. I love the leather jackets!

This is a great organic, fair trade and vegan clothing line. From the designing, to the production to the sales there are no bad practices involved. Feel good about buying new clothes!

People Tree is the resident shop at the delicious restaurant, Gunpowder. Whilst dining on some of the best food in Goa, take a look at this cool shop which sells a lot of different designers bits from clothing to jewelry to art to books.

Atomic 29

• Location: Mapusa, North Goa

A young independent designer on the scene, all of these items of jewelry are handmade at the designer’s home studio in Mapusa. She is a trained metal smith and has put her creativity into these unique pieces. Some can be found at People Tree but she can also be contacted directly for the full collection and special pieces.

Bunti

• Location: Agonda, South Goa

This boutique shop is in Agonda on the main beach street next to Zest. It is probably the only boutique shop in Agonda that isn’t selling the usual tourist stuff so if you are on that side make sure you check it out. They have beautifully designed handcrafted men and women’s wear.

Van Andel & Peace

• Location: Cheshire Cat in Assagao, North Goa

This is a great jewelry shop full of beautifully designed and sometimes one off pieces of silver and gold jewelry with precious stones. Owned by a couple who have lived in Goa for over 20 years they make a lot of the pieces in their workshop in the garden.

Paperworks

• Location: Panjim, North Goa

Not so much a fashion boutique but this is one of the best shops in Goa if you have a thing for stationary like I do. Found in a pretty secluded spot in Panjim, they have a huge variety of products made with the most beautiful designs all in an Indian style. Everything from writing paper, cards, wrapper paper, diaries, note pads to gift tags and artwork. I always stock up for future birthday cards!

Friday Market – The Goa Collective Bazaar

This is not a specific designer or shop but The Goa Collective Bazaar really has a lot to offer in terms of independent designers. Consider this the more premium market with a lot of the above designers taking a stall every Friday. If you are in North Goa on a Friday between November and April then be sure to visit this market to find a lot of options in one place!

• Location: Ashwem, North Goa

In Ashwem, just off the beach and behind the famous La Plage restaurant is a little square filled with boutique shops, independent European designers and the occasional bit of tat. Things from furniture, to art, to clothing. A great little spot to shop before or after a trip to the beautiful Ashwem Beach.

Tips for Shopping Designers in Goa

When visiting designer boutiques the style of shopping is slightly different to the usual haggling saga that takes places at most markets around India. In shops, items are likely to be a fixed price, with it written on the label. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t be a bit cheeky and ask for a deal if you are buying more than one item. Maybe they will say yes, maybe they won’t but it shouldn’t cause any offense. Trying to halve the price from its original sticker price, might, so best to avoid that.

As a lot of the above are independent designers, they are likely to be in the shop – so speak to them. Ask them about their line, their story and if you love their stuff, tell them.

If you saw something on their Instagram but can’t see it in store then contact them. If you can’t find their shop but love their clothes and branding, contact them. Everyone above is very accessible and I am sure would be very happy to help.

Looking for some beautiful places to visit in Northern Italy? Here’s your guide!

After living and traveling in Italy for over a year, I’ve learned that it is simply impossible to see all of this incredible country in just one trip…or even just one lifetime!

If you’ve visited Italy before and are looking to get a little off-the-beaten-path, or you find yourself dreaming of an Italian getaway filled with beautiful lakes, majestic mountains, colorful coastal villages, grand historic cities, and world-class cuisine, then Northern Italy is the perfect destination for you!

To help you plan a once-in-a-lifetime Northern Italian adventure, I’ll be highlighting some of the best places to visit and things to do in each of Northern Italy’s eight regions: Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna. While I’ve done my best to include the highlights of each region, it would be impossible to include everything in just one post. Beautiful Places in Aosta Valley

Visit for: Scenic Alpine Villages, Skiing, Hiking, Castles, Wellness Resorts

Remember when I said that it is impossible to visit all of Italy? Well, I’ll be honest and let you in on a secret-I haven’t actually visited the Aosta Valley. This region is actually the smallest in all of Italy and is nestled between Italy, Switzerland, and France. I have, however, stopped off at a train station near here, and you’ll immediately notice the French and Swiss influences. The architecture, local dishes, and even the official languages (both French and Italian) reflect these different cultures. In this incredibly scenic region, lovers of the outdoors will find plenty of hiking, skiing, and adventure activities in this Alpine destination in addition to historic castles and even Roman ruins!

1. Aosta

The town of Aosta is the valley’s capital city. This historic and charming town is known for its Roman ruins and offers quick access to nearby ski and wellness resorts as well as the Gran Paradiso National Park.

2. Gran Paradiso National Park

This national park is perfect for those who love to adventure and want to take in the scenic surroundings that the Aosta Valley has to offer. Whether you enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing, wildlife spotting, climbing, or other outdoor activities, you’ll have no shortage of things to do!

3. Courmayeur

This Alpine resort town is a can’t miss when in the Aosta Valley. In this quaint village, you’ll discover unforgettable landscapes, the impressive Mount Blanc, and be perfectly situated for skiing and hiking.

4. Aosta Valley Castles

If you’re a history lover, be sure to save time in your itinerary to visit a few of the many charming castles scattered throughout this delightful region.

Beautiful Places in Piedmont

Visit for: Turin, Alpine Views, Lakes, Wine

Piedmont is another region which borders both France and Switzerland, and of course the Alps. Piedmont is known for its grand capital city, Turin, mountainous terrain, wine production, and it also borders the beautiful Lake Maggiore.

5. Wine Country

Piedmont is famous for its wine production, particularly in the Langhe region. Wine lovers will relish in the opportunity to visit the vineyards which produce some of Italy’s most celebrated wines, such as Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition to wine tasting opportunities, many of these vineyards are situated near scenic and historic hilltop towns and offer stunning countryside views. If you prefer white wines, consider trying Asti Spumante, a sparkling wine native to the town of Asti (and a personal favorite!).

6. Turin

As the capital of Piedmont, Turin is an impressive city that boasts a variety of architectural styles including Baroque, Renaissance, Rococo, and Neo-Classical. The grand avenues, large public squares, and palatial complexes point to the city’s historic political and economic importance. You won’t want to miss the Royal Palace, Mole Antonelliana tower, the Egypt Museum, and the Duomo di San Giovanni which houses the famous Shroud of Torino to name just a few of the important cultural and architectural highlights waiting to be discovered in this city.

7. Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore shares its borders with Piedmont, Lombardy, and Switzerland, and it is perfect for those looking to enjoy some time on the water during their Northern Italy travels. Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy and is known for the Borromean islands, charming lakeside towns, and remarkable villas all beautifully situated with the Alps as their backdrop. While Lake Como may be the more well-known lake, if the idea of visiting the Borromean islands or even popping over to Switzerland intrigues you, then Lake Maggiore is worth a stop!

8. Lake Orta

For those looking to get even further from the beaten path, consider visiting Lake Orta. Here you’ll find beautiful scenery and charm with fewer tourists although there is a bit less in terms of things to do. Great if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway! Places to Visit in Lombardy

Visit for: Milan, Lake Como, Italian Alps, Quaint Lakeside Towns

While Lombardy often is left off the list for a first-time visit to Italy, it is one of my all-time favorite itinerary add ons for those looking to experience the north of Italy. From fashionable Milan to Lake Como’s stunning mountainous landscapes and gorgeous lakeside villages, this region has so much to offer. It’s no wonder the rich and famous love to vacation here!

9. Milan

This city is known worldwide as Italy’s fashion capital, which is especially evident during fashion week! While you’ll find an array of high-end stores and luxury shops, if you aren’t so into fashion, fear not! Milan is also home to many historic and cultural sights. Be sure to stop by the Duomo di Milano, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Sforza Castle to see some of the city’s most culturally significant architecture. 10. Lake Como

One of my favorite destinations in all of Italy, Lake Como is a must if you love the water, mountains, and colorful towns. Just a short journey by train from Milan, I recommend spending several days in Lake Como to explore its beautiful villages, impressive historic villas, and to enjoy the unparalleled scenery of this remarkable alpine lake. For those who love being active, you will find plenty to do in terms of hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking. If you prefer relaxing a bit more, you can easily hop from town to town on the ferry, and shops, restaurants, and scenic cafes abound. Be sure to check out this guide to Lake Como before you visit!

11. Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore, Lake Iseo

Lake Como isn’t the only famous lake in Lombardy! The region also borders several other lakes which are worth visiting as well! I haven’t been lucky enough to visit them all, so try reading this helpful guide for a comparison.

12. Mantua

Situated between 3 artificial lakes, Mantua is a historic city that was once one of Italy’s most important cultural centers. It is the perfect place to spend a day for art and architecture lovers who are looking to get a bit off the beaten path and discover the castle, palace, basilica, and other treasures nestled within this  UNESCO World Heritage Site.

13. Switzerland

You know what they say…when in Lombardy…visit Switzerland? Well, you heard it here first! As Lombardy is located along the Swiss border, what better way to see two beautiful countries in one trip than by popping over to Switzerland? Consider paying a visit to nearby Lake Lugano, which is located in both Italy and Switzerland, if you can’t get enough of the region’s alpine lakes!

Beautiful Places in Trentino-Alto Adige

Visit for: The Dolomites,  Access to Switzerland and Austria, Medieval Castles, Skiing

Trentino-Alto Adige borders both Switzerland and Austria, and it is made up of land that historically belonged to the Holy Roman Empire and the state of Tyrol. With such a mix of culture and history, this region certainly has a different feel from the rest of Italy – one that is distinctly, well, Tyrolean. The official languages are Italian and German with a few other dialects that are also spoken. In this region, visitors enjoy a blend of cultures, the Dolomites, access to Switzerland and Austria, plenty of skiing opportunities, and some incredible medieval castles.

14. Trento

Like most Italian cities, you’ll find an impressive cathedral, lovely piazzas, and, of course, plenty of historic buildings. What sets Trento apart is the Buonconsiglio Castle, known for its impressive frescoes. From Trento, you’ll be well-positioned to access the region’s many ski resorts and hiking trails if the outdoors and Italian Alps are calling you!

15. Bolzano

Looking to discover a hint of Germany while in Italy? Look no further than Bolzano, as this charming city feels far more German than it does Italian! After all, it has only been a recognized part of Italy since 1919. This charming city is the largest in Trentino-Alto Adige, and it is the region’s capital. From Bolzano, you can easily explore the Dolomites and visit some of the region’s beautiful castles and churches. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to visit the famous “Ötzi the Iceman,” a natural mummy discovered in the Alps that dates back to 3,400 BC. You can pay a visit to him by dropping by Bolzano’s South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. If you happen to be visiting Bolzano during the wintertime or ski season, be sure to check out the famous Christmas markets! You’ll really feel as though you’ve been transported to Germany!

16. Lake Garda

Trentino-Alto Adige isn’t just famous for the Dolomites! The region also borders Lake Garda. Lake Garda is actually the largest lake in Italy, and it is known for its clear glacial waters and beautiful waterfront towns. While Lake Garda is a popular vacation spot for Italians, you’ll find fewer foreign tourists here than Lake Como, so it may be just what you are looking for if you are hoping to get off-the-beaten-trail!

17. The Dolomites

Sprinkled throughout Trentino-Alto Adige, you’ll find plenty of ski chalets, wellness resorts, castles, hiking trails, and charming smaller towns just waiting to be explored as you adventure throughout the Italian Alps. If you love mountains and the outdoors, then this region is definitely for you!

Places to Visit in Veneto

Visit for: Venice, Verona, Padua, the Dolomites

Veneto is one of Northern Italy’s most famous and visited regions as it is home to Venice and the canals and waterways that make up this historic and picturesque city. While many first time visitors to Italy make Venice a must on their itinerary, some of the region’s other incredible sites don’t quite make the cut. The region has so much more to offer beyond Venice – from the romantic city of Verona to the mountainous Dolomites to the historic Padua, you’re bound to discover some incredible places when in Veneto!

18. Venice

A visit to Veneto simply wouldn’t be complete without spending some time in Venice. This exquisite city on the water is at the top of so many visitors’ bucket lists for a reason. From the beautiful bridges and canals to the city’s quaint gondolas and grand historic architecture, Venice is magical and unique in every way. It’s no wonder this City of Bridges attracts 30 million visitors per year! Of course, with so many tourists, Venice can feel a bit overwhelming, so I would highly recommend exploring some of Veneto’s less frequented cities if you are looking for a deeper dive into culture.

19. Murano and Burano

If you have the time while you are visiting Venice, I highly recommend popping over to the islands of Murano and Burano. Murano is famous for the Venetian glass which is produced there, and there are several glass factories where you can see a glass-making demonstration and tour workshops filled with completed glassware. Burano is a colorful fishing village which is the stuff of every Instagrammer’s dreams. You’ll find row after row of brightly colored houses on this enchanting island, and can even visit a shop or two where handcrafted Burano lace is made.

20. Verona

I have to admit, as a romantic, Verona is one of my all-time favorite cities to visit in Italy. As the fabled setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, there’s all sorts of fun literary tourist-ing to be done in this endearing and historic town. Stop by Romeo or Juliet’s house, write your very own letter to Juliet, and get lucky in love by touching the statue of Juliet.  Romeo and Juliet not your thing? Enjoy some of the city’s other noted attractions such as the Verona Opera (which is held in the 3rd largest amphitheater in Italy) right in the heart of the city. Verona is an incredibly walkable city that is dripping in history, beautiful views, and so much more! Learn more about why you’ll fall in love with Verona in this post!

21. Padua

Padua is most well-known for its university. Established in 1222, the University of Padua is one of the oldest in the world! That being said, there is much to see in this city beyond the University. Historic churches, palaces, and piazza’s await, including the Scrovegni Chapel which is filled with frescoes by Giotto, for any fellow art-lovers.

22. Dolomites

The Veneto region also contains a portion of the Dolomites, which is perfect for those looking to explore the mountains, hike, or ski. One of the most famous spots in the Italian Alps, the Cinque Torri, can be found within the mountainous portion of this region!

Beautiful Places in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Visit for: Trieste, Access to Austria and Slovenia, the Adriatic, Dolomites

Tucked away in the Northeastern corner of Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia is certainly one of Italy’s lesser-visited regions. I myself have only driven through the region en route to Slovenia! However, if you find yourself making a trip to Northern Italy or are considering a visit to Slovenia yourself, there are definitely several spots worth visiting, and you’ll find the blend of cultures to be quite interesting!

Places to Visit in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

23. Trieste

Trieste is Friuli Venezia Giulia’s capital city. Located just a short drive from the Slovenian border, this port city along the Adriatic has major Slovenian influences. Here you’ll find castles, cathedrals, elegant piazzas, the scenic Grand Canal, Roman ruins, and even a former Nazi Concentration camp, all of which highlight the long and ever-changing history of this region.

24. Slovenia

I know, I know, this is supposed to be a blog post about Northern Italy, so why am I talking about Slovenia? Well, the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana is conveniently located just an hour from Trieste and is not to be missed if you find yourself nearby! I absolutely love Slovenia, and I took a bus from Trieste to visit this incredible country. From the capital city of Ljubljana to stunning Lake Bled to the fascinating Postojna Cave, there are so many cool places to visit just beyond the Italian-Slovenian border! You won’t have to wander far to pack in some seriously cool Slovenian adventures. Read more about what this destination has to offer here!

25. Dolomites (Again!)

Like many of Northern Italy’s regions, Friuli-Venezia Giulia is also home to the Dolomite mountains. For those of you who simply can’t get enough of the Swiss Alps, there are more scenic views and skiing opportunities just waiting to be had!

Liguria

Visit for: Cinque Terre Villages, Hiking, swimming in the Mediterranean, Genoa

Liguria is Northern Italy’s most coastal region as it follows the Mediterranean from France to Tuscany. For many, this region is a must visit while in Italy, as it is home to the famous five colorful villages that make up Cinque Terre. If you are looking to enjoy the sea, love hiking, or are dying to get that perfect Instagram shot, then be sure to put Liguria on your itinerary!

26. Cinque Terre

Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore are the five scenic towns that are the jewels of the Italian Riviera. While it is best to visit anytime between late spring and early fall if you are looking to swim or enjoy better weather, these stunning towns are breathtaking year-round. Whether you are hoping to hike the spectacular trails which connect the towns or wishing to take the train and absorb the spectacular views from the striking villages themselves, you are sure to be mesmerized by the beauty all around you! It is important to note that Cinque Terre can be flooded with tourists, so be prepared to experience the magic of these small towns along with many others! 27. Genoa

If you find yourself in Liguria and are looking to get away from smaller villages and experience city life, consider popping over to Genoa. This port city is Liguria’s capital, and it is famous for being the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. You’ll find museums, maritime attractions, grand boulevards and piazzas, historic buildings, and more in this maritime capital!

28. Portofino, Portovenere, Santa Margherita

Can’t get enough of the Italian Riviera? There is more to explore beyond Cinque Terre! If you are looking to get a bit further from the crowded towns of Cinque Terre, these other Ligurian locations certainly fit the bill! You’ll find vibrant and historic Mediterranean villages here and tons of Italian vacationers who prefer spending the summer months in these alternative destinations, offering a more local, unique experience!

Emilia-Romagna

Visit for: Excellent Italian Cuisine, Medieval Cities and Villages, Bologna

Last, but certainly not least, we have Emilia-Romagna. This region is perhaps most often recognized for its world-renowned cuisine, which is often regarded as the best in all of Italy. In addition to all of the fantastic gastronomy in the region, you’ll find medieval cities such as Bologna and Ravenna just waiting for you to explore them! This is an excellent region to combine with Tuscany or Veneto, as it borders both regions. You’ll also have access to the Adriatic!

29. Bologna

This medieval city is one of my favorites in all of Italy. It has a truly authentic Italian feel, and some of the best food in the region can be found here! In addition to the many local dishes that await visitors, you’ll find that the city is famous for it’s covered walkways (porticoes) which line practically every street. Bologna is lively and bustling with plenty of historic towers, churches, and landmarks to keep a tourist engaged! Read my 1-day Bologna itinerary here for more inspiration.

30. Ravenna

On my most recent visit to Italy I was lucky enough to visit Ravenna, and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t visited sooner! If you love art, Ravenna is an absolute must as it is home to some truly stunning mosaics which adorn the notable buildings around town. Just an hour from Bologna, this city is the perfect day to spend a day exploring.

31. Parma and Modena

If you are a foodie, be sure to expand beyond Bologna to visit some of Emilia-Romagna’s other culinary gems such as Parma and Modena. Parma is known for Parmesan cheese, while Modena gets its claim to fame from the balsamic vinegar produced there. Though these cities may have a bit less to offer in terms of charm and tourist activities, they make an excellent addition to any visit to Emilia-Romagna.

32. Rimini

Had enough food and ready to relax on the beach? For those visiting Emilia-Romagna in the summertime, Rimini makes for a perfect escape to the Adriatic! You’ll find there is plenty of history and coastline to be explored as you relax and soak up the sun here.

Looking to get a taste of China without flying all the way there? Check out these things to do in Richmond, BC!

I’ve always said that my luxe fantasy would be a private, live-in Chinese chef who hand-shredded chicken, plumped shrimp dumplings, steamed black fungi, and served dim sum on Sunday mornings. So far, I haven’t gotten the live-in part, but I found Chinese food nirvana in Richmond BC, Canada.  I also found a bunch of things to do and see in Richmond that made me feel like I was in China, without the long flight and jetlag.

“Seriously, Canada?” you’re probably thinking. Yes, or shi, as Chinese people say.  The Vancouver International Airport is located on the island city of Richmond. But everyone around me was speaking Chinese, signs were in Chinese, the culture was Chinese, but this was Canada. “What’s going on here?” I wondered.

I’d soon discover just how rich in Chinese culture, Richmond was.

Best Things to Do in Richmond, B.C.

Try tai chi at the Richmond Centre

When I think of China, tai chi leaps to mind. I remember walking through parks in China and watching groups of people gliding gracefully from one tai chi move to the next in the early morning hours. And guess what? The same thing is going on in Richmond, but it’s indoors.

I followed an insider tip and went to the Richmond Centre at 8 a.m., before it opened to the public. I wandered around and throughout the mall, I found tai chi and Chinese dance and exercise classes for students of all ages. As I stood and watched, a teacher invited me to join one of the free tai chi classes. Of course, I was clueless, but the students were patient and helped me with the basic moves. I loved it and went back again two days later for more tai chi. Highly recommended, as it’s a chance for you to exercise and meet Chinese locals.

Experience Chinese spirituality

Visitors of all cultures, backgrounds, religions, and beliefs are welcome at Buddhist centers.  A Chinese couple explained to me that Buddhism is not a religion; it is a philosophy and a way of life.  And I met a young woman from Taiwan who said: “In Chinese culture, we believe that everything has life—stones, vegetables, plants.”

When I asked her what I might expect at a temple, she thought for a moment and replied, “The divinities like the smell of incense. You can buy some yourself, and make an offering if you wish. You can pray for something like safe travels.”

Visit the International Buddhist Temple

The temple gardens are magical, and you’ll love the shrine of golden Buddhas and the Thousand Buddha Hall.

Heal at the Energy Bagua Wellness Center

I found out about an unusual new form of moving meditation called Energy Bagua which is designed to help students find relief from physical and emotional suffering and restore inner balance. You may work up a sweat by the deceptively simple act of circling around an indoor potted tree to experience healing and peace.

It was so unusual that I spoke to numerous participants and they reported a significant reduction in symptoms and feelings of wellbeing. I tried it myself and found it simple, soothing, and a gentle form of exercise.

Where to Eat in Richmond

Before the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, a wave of people arrived from Hong Kong. Among them were high-end restaurant owners and top chefs, which means one of the best things to do in Richmond, BC is to eat.

Today, on this small Canadian island with 216,000 inhabitants, there are an unbelievable 400 Chinese restaurants serving authentic Szechuan, Cantonese, Xingjiang, and Shanghainese food.

Some places are palatial and others are holes-in-the-wall. At first, I thought I was lucky because I stumbled on the right restaurants. But by the end of my visit, I realized that there’s no such thing as a bad Asian eatery in Richmond. You can dine well on any budget, and exciting new Asian restaurants are opening all the time. Here are some specific picks for where you can please your palate.

Old Goa, also known as Velha Goa, is a city full of history located on the banks of the lovely Mandovi River. Situated in North Goa it acted as the capital city of Portuguese India back in the 15th century before Panjim took over. It is probably the most religious area in the state with lots of beautiful churches all located within walking distance or a short car journey of each other.

Goa, as I am sure you are all aware, is mostly known for its beaches. It doesn’t have as many tourist landmarks as other Indian states and cities, so if you do find yourself needing a break from the beach and a thirst for some culture – visiting Old Goa is one of the best things to do.

“I thought India was mainly Hindu and Muslim,” I hear you say.

Well, the Portuguese are said to have brought Christianity to India during their colonization in the 15th century. Firstly to Kerala and then along the Konkan coast. It is the third largest religion in India, and there are a few states that have large populations of Catholics and Christians – Goa being one of them. If you have been traveling around other parts of India, especially the North you will notice you have mainly seen temples, mosques and gurdwaras. It is now time to feast your eyes on some beautifully designed, (usually) white Goan churches!

Tours to Old Goa

There are lots of great tours to be found in Old Goa. There really is so much history so if you are interested in finding out a bit more then I would recommend joining a tour to really be able to learn about the different Saints, about how Catholicism made it’s way to Goa and all the beautiful architecture. Below are a few options:

Klook offers a great walking tour around the ruins and a few churches. Viator has a private heritage walk if you don’t want to join a group. And my favorite but may not be as informative is the B:Live electric bike tour around Old Goa.

I would also suggest pairing a day out to Old Goa with a trip to the Spice Plantation in Ponda. This can all be done in one day and is a great way to see both. Hire a taxi for the day and start with lunch at the Spice Plantation and then Old Goa on the way back.

You will have noticed that the dress code in Goa differs largely from the dress code around the rest of India. Shorts are encouraged and a cheeky shoulder or knee are welcomed. However, when visiting Old Goa it is recommended to take a shawl or sarong with you to cover up those cheeky knees and shoulders.

Especially for ladies, I would recommend taking two shawls, one for your shoulders and one to act as a stand in skirt while you enter the churches. This means you won’t have to overdress for the day and melt in the heat. For men, as usual, it is fine to be wearing shorts but it is best to carry an extra shawl just in case.

Be respectful of worshippers

When inside the churches, notice your surroundings and try and keep conversation to a minimum as there may be people attending a service or coming in to pray. Old Goa gets very busy with tourists so it can be hard on the people actually going there to worship.

Careful with the photos

Some churches don’t allow photographs inside so please keep to these rules. If they aren’t allowed there will be a clear sign outside saying so. If there isn’t one then take it as pictures are fine but please make sure the flash is off.

Pace yourself

Pace yourself, don’t feel like you have to rush around and see everything to tick it off the list. I always feel like it is better to see 3 places slowly than see 10 in a rush. If you have been traveling around India then I am sure you know what it feels like to be temple’d out!

Places in Old Goa to Visit

Goans are very proud of their faith and churches, and many will make the journey to Old Goa every Sunday for their weekly service. Within the Old Goa area there are eleven churches in total. However, I wouldn’t recommend pushing yourself to see them all unless you really want to. Below are a few I recommend:

Basilica of Bom Jesus

Opened in 1605, this is not the prettiest of places in Old Goa from the outside and, unusually, it is not white. However, it is maybe one of the most sacred as it holds the remnants of St. Francis Xavier’s body who was the Patron Saint of Goa. He is said to have done a lot for Catholicism back in the 15th century in Goa and is very well respected and worshiped.

Rumor has it that a lady who was visiting tried to bite off the toe of St. Francis Xavier and keep it for herself and that is why the body is no longer on show all year round. It is now kept in a glass case up high and only comes down every ten years. I am not sure how true this story is but the every ten years part is now true!

There is a big festival in Old Goa every year on the 3rd December for the Feast of St. Francis Xavier where thousands come from all of over to attend. Lots of stalls will be put up selling goodies, sweets, snacks, and unnecessary tat. There will be a large procession with the body being paraded around and worshiped. If you happen to be in Goa around this time I would recommend going to take a look but prepare yourself for the heat and the crowds and for this you will definitely need to dress respectfully.

Chapel of Our Lady of The Mount

This is my favorite place in Old Goa mainly because of the view and location. This is set apart from the rest and is located up a long and very steep hill. You can walk up (I have done this once) but it is also recommended to ask your taxi to take you up and wait at the bottom of the stairs for you – which in itself is quite a hike!

It was built in 1519 and has been rebuilt twice since then. It has a really beautiful sunset view over the Mandovi River and looks way out towards Panjim from the courtyard. If you find yourself in the Old Goa area in the evening, this is a sunset to chase!

Every year in February the lovely Monte Marte Music Festival takes place in the courtyard of this chapel and also inside. I was lucky enough to attend this year (2020) and watch a beautiful Indian flute show with the sun setting behind. My friend’s mum then sang in a choir inside the chapel which was amazing to experience. You don’t need tickets for this but it is best to arrive early to get a chair. If you are in Goa in early February I would highly recommend coming to this to really see the true beauty and culture Old Goa has to offer.

St. Augustine

Built in 1602, St. Augustine once had 4 towers. It now lies in ruins as it collapsed hundreds of years ago due to neglect. Now only one tower remains which stands very tall and looks as though it could fall any minute (hopefully it doesn’t!). It is quite eerie. I believe this site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the more visited sites in Goa. There are a few inscriptions to be found along the way and be sure to check the signboards to see what it would have looked like back in the day.

Saint Cajetan

Completed in 1661, this church is said to be modeled on St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. It has a very beautiful altar that isn’t the usual lavish decor you may be used to. If you look up you should be able to find the occasional sneaky bat hanging upside down from the ceiling having a nap. When standing near the altar, have a look on the floor. There you can find the markings of the opening to the cemetery located underneath the altar. It was used for dead Portuguese soldiers. Creepy!

Cathredral Se

This cathedral, set among a pretty garden, is set just adjacent to the Basilica of Bom Jesus. If you want to see a big extravagant and very gold altar then head over to this one.

I can’t pretend I have visited all eleven churches in Old Goa. However, the above are the ones I have been to and can vouch for. If you are into religious history and the architecture of churches then I recommend making room in your beach-filled Goa itinerary to see them.

If you can’t make it to Old Goa, churches can be found in most neighborhoods around Goa.  They may not be as sacred or extravagant, but they do exist. Try Lady of Immaculate Conception in Panjim, St. Alex in Calangute (my grandparents got married here!), St. Thomas in Aldona.

If you also find yourself in Goa around Easter, then check out Old Goa on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The churches will have large and long services happening with some holding processions. If you do choose to attend then again prepare yourself for the heat and the crowds and dress respectfully.

I find Old Goa very cool because you really wouldn’t imagine all these churches to be found in India. Goa feels like such a world away from other parts of India, and Old Goa really highlights this for me. If you close your eyes while you are there you could be in Italy, Portugal, or Spain. Just ignore the constant beeping, shouting offers of taxis, and the requests for selfies!

Wondering how to spend 3 days in Seville, Spain? Here’s all you need to know!

Seville is one of my favorite cities in all of Europe. The charming capital of Andalucia is known for its stunning Mudejar architecture, lively atmosphere, charming orange-tree lined streets, and truly authentic Spanish feel. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Seville is the perfect destination for a weekend city break. It’s an absolute must if you are planning a larger trip throughout Spain. 

Before you book your tickets, I must warn you. Seville is absolutely spellbinding. After my first visit to the city, I found myself so enchanted that I spent the following two years teaching English in this Andalusian paradise. 

With this 3 day Seville itinerary, you’ll be well on your way to feeling just like I did with this captivating jewel of southern Spain. 

Tips for Visiting Seville

When to Visit

One of my favorite things about Seville is the fact that it is sunny nearly every day! While it does rain more in the winter months, you’ll find that temperatures remain very mild, making it a great destination year-round. In the winter, temperatures range between 40-60°F, but in the summer you’ll find temperatures as high as 100°F (or more)! If you struggle with the heat, I’d avoid visiting during July/August, the city’s hottest months. 

Seville Fair

If you are planning to visit Seville in April/May, be sure to check the dates of the Feria de Abril. This annual festival is held two weeks after Holy Week (Semana Santa), and is a time when the whole city puts daily life on pause, dresses up in their Feria finest, and prepares to party!

This is an excellent time to visit if you love attending local festivals and witnessing traditions. However, if you would rather see the city’s museums and landmarks, you’ll find that this is not the best time to go. The city becomes crowded and expensive, and many restaurants, shops, and attractions close or have limited hours. How Long to Spend in Seville

Seville is a very walkable city, so you’ll find that it is quite easy to see most of the highlights in just a few days without feeling overwhelmed. You can, of course, book a guided tour to see them too. I recommend spending 2-3 days in Seville to cover everything, and this itinerary includes two full days in the city and one day spent on a day trip. If you are looking for a more relaxed visit, you may wish to forgo the day trip and see the sights at a more leisurely pace.

You 3-Day Seville Itinerary

Day 1: Seville’s Highlights

Today is all about getting out and exploring Seville’s most iconic sights. Grab yourself a cafe con leche and get ready for a day spent taking in some of the city’s most famous and beautiful locales.

Plaza de España

Your first stop of the day is the Plaza de España. This massive square is, in my opinion, the most beautiful in all of Spain, though it is not the most historic. The plaza was actually built for the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929, making it a relatively new addition to the city. Spend some time wandering around this semi-circular neo-mudejar construction as you admire the intricate tile work which depicts different cities throughout Andalucia.

If you’d like, you can even spend a few euros to paddle around the small “river” running through the square. An equally fun and cheesy activity I 100% recommend. Be sure to bring your camera, as this square is picture-perfect! If you’re a Star Wars fan, you might recognize the location from Attack of the Clones.

Parque de María Luisa

After you’ve explored the Plaza de España, you’ll want to head next door to the Parque de María Luisa. This beautiful park is the perfect place for a stroll or even a picnic.

You’ll find exotic trees, blooming flowers, lovely landscaping, interesting water features, and even a pond filled with birds and other animals. This public park is rather large, so be sure to check out the maps from time to time to ensure you aren’t missing any of the tucked-away treasures you’re bound to stumble upon! 

Royal Alcázar of Seville

Your next stop of the day is the Royal Alcázar of Seville, one of the city’s most famous and visited sites. This gorgeous and historic royal palace dates back to the 14th century, and features Mudéjar architecture and Muslim influences which are hallmarks of Andalucian architecture. You’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time as you navigate through the palace and its gardens taking in the detailed tile work, extravagant rooms, and ornate details throughout. The location is so impressive that it was featured on “Game of Thrones!” Be sure to purchase your tickets in advance, as the entrance lines can be very long. In the summer months, tickets can even sell out! Book skip the line tickets here

Catedral de Sevilla

Nestled in the heart of the city and quite near to the Alcázar is Seville’s impressive cathedral. This massive gothic structure is actually the largest Cathedral in the world, making it pretty impossible to miss when visiting Seville! Don’t just settle for viewing the Cathedral from the outside. Even if you’ve seen more European churches than you’d ever care to, you’ll want to step inside. Not only is the Cathedral’s sheer size absolutely astounding, but you’ll find Christopher Columbus’ tomb here, and it’s one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen.

The Giralda

The Giralda is another reason to venture into Seville’s Cathedral. This former minaret today functions as the Cathedral’s bell tower and offers some of the best views of Seville! You’ll find that the panoramic city views are well worth the climb. I also appreciate that the walkway up is far less narrow than most other bell towers I have climbed, making the walk up more pleasant and less crowded and claustrophobic than other towers. Book Catedral and Giralda tickets here

Barrio de Santa Cruz

The Barrio de Santa Cruz is the city’s former Jewish Quarter and the most historic and touristy neighborhood located just next to the Cathedral. Spend some time enjoying the labyrinth of narrow streets and the lovely squares within. If you have time to join a walking tour of Seville, you’ll be able to learn more about the Barrio Santa Cruz and its history. Book a walking tour here

Tapas Time

After a busy day exploring some of the city’s main highlights, it is time to try some of the Seville’s best tapas! Be sure to do as the locals do and hop from tapas bar to tapas bar in search of the most delicious small plates in town.

You won’t want to start your evening too early, as most restaurants don’t open up until 7:30 or 8:00PM! While you’re in the Santa Cruz neighborhood, try starting your tapas tour at Casa Morales, the second-oldest tapas bar in town and favorite among Sevillanos.

Day 2: Sightseeing

Now that you’ve discovered some of Seville’s most famous landmarks, it’s time to see what else the city has to offer! From beautiful riverfront walks to tucked away historic homes, you’ll have lots to explore on your second day in this magical city! 

Enjoy the Guadalquivir riverfront

During the summer months in particular, you’ll find locals and tourists alike enjoying the Guadalquivir riverfront. The river separates many of the tourist sights from the Triana neighborhood and used to be a part of my daily commute! Whether you simply walk along the river (there are promenades on both sides) or decide to have a picnic along the shore, the riverfront is an excellent place to spend the morning! 

Torre del Oro

As you walk along the riverfront, you’ll find the Torre del Oro, a 13th century watchtower which overlooks the Guadalquivir. If you’d like to visit, there are a few military exhibits housed within the tower, and of course an excellent view of the river. 

Explore Triana

As your morning already includes a walk along the river, you’ll want to cross the Triana Bridge, Puente de Isabel II, to explore the Triana neighborhood of Seville. This authentic area is not only beautiful, but it is a favorite among locals as there aren’t as many tourist attractions on this side of the river. You’ll really be able to see the traditions of Seville come to life here in the bars, restaurants, and squares. If you are looking to purchase some tile work or ceramics, then this is an area where you’ll find a variety of shops perfect for souvenir hunting!

Visit a market or two

Try popping into the Triana Market for a chance to see where locals do their grocery shopping (outside of the city’s supermarkets). Here you’ll find fresh produce, meat, and other goods all sold by local vendors. If you are looking for a more trendy market to grab a snack, then simply walk across the bridge to the Mercado Lonja del Barranco, a gourmet market with a variety of offerings from smoothies to more traditional tapas. The 19th-century building was originally a fish market, but today is an excellent gathering spot or place to grab a drink as you enjoy views of the river!

Plaza del Toros

Another sight you’ll pass on your walk along the river is the Plaza del Toros, Seville’s bullring. Personally, I have opted not to attend any bullfights while in Spain, as six bulls are killed during the fights and they are very violent. That being said, you can opt to simply tour the bullring and learning about the history of bullfighting in Seville.

Visit a historic home…or two!

There are several impressive and beautiful noble homes that one can (and should) visit when in Seville. I highly recommend paying a visit to the Palacio de las Duenas or the Casa de Pilatos to get a sense of the city’s stately past. If you have time or love historic homes, then try to squeeze in both! These former residences are impeccably preserved and feature antique artifacts, gorgeous grounds, and highlight the beautiful tiles that Seville is so famous for.

Visit the oldest tapas bar in Seville

Just a few minutes’ walk from the Palacio de las Duenas you’ll find the oldest tapas bar in Seville, El Rinconcillo. The bar dates back to 1670 and still offers some of the best tapas in town, in addition to its amazing authentic atmosphere! Another great thing about this bar is that it’s open all afternoon and evening, so you don’t have to wait until late to sample the delicious food and drink within! I highly recommend the croquetas, and of course some jamon iberico!

Enjoy sunset at Las Setas

The Metropol Parasol, known to locals as Las Setas (the mushrooms) is a modern structure that certainly sticks out among the older structures in Seville. For just a few euros, you can purchase a ticket to the top, where you’ll follow the pathways around this cloud-like grid as you take in the city. Try to coordinate your visit so you can watch the sunset, as this is certainly one of the best views in town! The juxtaposition of the modern and historic truly shows the city off, and the pinks and purples of the setting sun and yellow city lights highlight Seville’s best features. 

Alameda de Hercules

After sunset, it is time to enjoy even more tapas and some of the city’s famous nightlife in the Alameda de Hercules. This large, bustling square is a favorite among locals, particularly a younger crowd, and it was my go-to when searching for a place to meet with friends, grab a drink, or enjoy some tapas. Spend a couple of hours doing as the Spanish do, hopping from bar to bar enjoying tapas, conversation, and the lively atmosphere. 

See a Flamenco performance

Andalucia is famous for its Flamenco dancing, so be sure to catch a performance while you are in town! A flamenco performance is the perfect way to cap off a busy day touristing, or it is a great way to start an evening spent dancing the night away! You can choose to purchase tickets to a Flamenco show, or if you are on a budget there are several bars which offer free performances. If you do opt to visit a free performance at a bar (one popular spot is La Carboneria) be sure to check online to see what times and days these performances are offered. 

Day 3: Day Trip from Seville

Today is the perfect day to choose your own adventure! Whether you stayed out late dancing and are ready to relax, have a few highlights from previous days you weren’t able to squeeze in, or are looking to hit some of the city’s museums, today is the day to do just that!

That being said, if you’re like me and are trying to squeeze in as much as possible, you might be ready for a new adventure! One of the best things about Seville is its location-you’ll have easy access to a variety of amazing day trips! From Roman ruins to the beach, here are some of my favorites:

Italica

Just 20 minutes outside of Seville, these incredible Roman ruins are easily accessible via public transportation. The amphitheater was even featured in Game of Thrones! Italica is an excellent choice for a half-day trip from Seville, especially if you are on a budget or there are a few things you’d still like to see in the city! Cadiz

Looking to hit the beach? Simply hop on a train and in less than two hours you’ll find yourself in beautiful Cadiz. The city is quite walkable and centralized, making it easy to see in just one day. Even if it isn’t quite swimming season, you’ll find lots of history here (from phonecian ruins to 17th century fortresses) in Spain’s oldest city! Check out my favorite things to do in Cadiz here. 

Cordoba

Cordoba is one of my favorite cities in Andalucia. It makes for an excellent day trip as it is less than an hour from Seville by train. The city is home to the famous Mezquita (a must see!) among other historic buildings and even a palace. The city especially comes to life in May during the festival of the patios, so if you are planning a may visit, the town is not to be missed! Ronda

If you have a rental car and are interested in heading a little further afield, consider visiting scenic Ronda. This charming pueblo blanco is considered to be one of the most beautiful “white towns” in Spain. Plus, the cliffside views certainly make it one of the most unique. The drive is just under two hours, and is worth every minute! Read all about why you should visit Ronda in this post! 

As you can see, there is no shortage of things to do in Seville! Whether you spend your time wandering from tapas bar to tapas bar, visiting historic palaces and churches, marveling at Mudejar architecture, or adventuring on day trips, you’re bound to fall in love with this city, just as I have! 20 Unique Things to Do in Buffalo, NY

1. Try the wings at Anchor Bar

Birthplace of the original Buffalo Wings, this modest bar and restaurant has won accolades ranging from a James Beard Foundation Award for “America’s Classic Restaurant,” to “Best of Show” at the National Chicken Wing Festival. Try Tuesday nights for the killer combo of live jazz + pizza + a couple dozen hot wings.

2. Grab some Mexican at Cantina Loco

If you love Mexican spirits, this Elmwood Village hangout is the place to take a flight, with nearly four dozen tequilas and mezcals to choose from. It’s also the place for stick-to-your-ribs tacos. The deep-fried California Fish Tacos rock, with zesty pickled slaw and spicy sauce.

3. Grab a coffee at Grindhaus

Need to re-caffeinate? This boho Allentown coffee shop has a cozy, pre-Instagram aesthetic and cheap eats (many vegan). It’s the perfect place to hunker down with a book… or kill time if you’re waiting for a table at Cantina Loco or Allentown Burger Project.

4. Find your next read at Talking Leaves Books

Buffalo’s oldest indie bookshop is one of Elmwood Village’s anchor shops, and a must for those with a passion for literary fiction, poetry and/or social justice. While small, the shop has a well-curated selection – I never leave without an armload of books, including my fave genres – travel, essays and creative nonfiction about running.

5. Eat your way through Elmwood Village Farmers Market

May through November, Bidwell Parkway is the place to on Saturday mornings, especially if you’re hungry! This 20-year-old alfresco market is only open to producers, meaning, all the vendors make what they sell. That sourdough loaf, cold-pressed juice or artisanal kimchee? All made locally, by the person selling it to you!

6. Try out Wasabi Japanese Restaurant

It’s not slick, but Wasabi is an Elmwood staple where you can enjoy satisfying sushi and teriyaki in a cozy little hideaway – perfect for a date night.

7. Or try the Japanese at SATO

For a hipper, more casual-upscale take on Japanese cuisine, consider SATO, a homegrown success that has grown now includes the modern Japanese restaurant in Elmwood Village;

SATO Ramen in University Heights; and SATO Brewpub, a downtown izakaya with a small-plates menu, including yakitori (grilled meat skewers) and bentos.

8. Check out Albright-Knox Art Gallery

Exploring the Albright-Knox Art Gallery is one of my fave things to do in Buffalo, NY. Unfortunately, the main campus of this leading modern-art institution is freshly closed for renovations, but you can catch engaging exhibits through 2020/2021 at its temporary Albright-Knox Northland location.

9. Go mural spotting

Make sure your phone battery is fully charged before hitting the town in search of the larger-than-life wall murals that are transforming communities into art hubs. From quirky-cute to thought-provoking and historically centered, many of these murals are part of the Albright-Knox Public Art Initiative.

10. Shop at Target

If you’re American, you’re probably scratching your head wondering “What’s the big deal?” but Target’s ill-fated mission to Canada a few years ago left many fans starved for the capsule collections our American friends take for granted. So yeah: Target.

11. Get some food souvenirs at Lexington Coop Market

Drop by to stock your fridge if you’re staying overnight. You’re not? It’s still worth a stop for foodie souvenirs from local hot sauces (I always pick up some, whether I’m traveling locally or internationally) to regionally crafted dog treats (for those of us with pampered pups).

12. Try the beer, bourbon, and burgers at Allen Burger Venture

Splurge on a grass-fed angus burger, washed down with a craft beer and a whiskey-bourbon-Scotch flight, if you dare. Allen Burger Venture says its beef is sourced from verified humane and sustainable ranches, but a full list of “alternative burgers” ensures non-beef eaters are covered, too.

PRO TIP: Order the wings. ABV never claimed to invent Buffalo wings, but I’m pretty sure they’ve perfected them.

13. Shop at Walden Galleria Mall

Sure, Canada has a lot of the chains we used to have to travel south of the border for, but… not all in one place. While many Canadians associate Buffalo with outlet shopping, Walden Galleria is the mall to hit if you want fresh finds, not cheap-and-cheerful steals. Everything you could possibly need is here – with a Cheesecake Factory, too. Perfect for a rainy day in Buffalo.

14. Hang out in Canalside

A four-seasons destination and part of Buffalo’s waterfront revitalization, Canalside is the place to go right now for ice skating, curling, ice bowling and – hello! – ice bumper cars. During the warmer months, the inner harbor the perfect spot to walk, picnic, or catch an outdoor concert or festival.

15. Explore Outer Harbor

The “wilder”part of the waterfront, this 200-acre green space is a must if your idea of things to do in Buffalo, NY includes enjoying the great outdoors. Hike or snowshoe the trails in winter, or catch a concert in summer. Bike or run the trails (bike rentals are available in season), or join a free summer fitness class.

16. Run the Buffalo Marathon

Looking for a flat, fast course to hit a new PB (personal best)? The Buffalo Marathon is a runner favorite (93% of past runners recommend the event), and uber-inclusive, too. Race weekend includes the full marathon, a half marathon, 5K, and the 1K Ruffalo Stampede dog run, and a kids’ mini marathon.

17. Visit the Buffalo & Erie Country Botanical Gardens

Organized around a stunning 67’-tall palm dome filled with lush palms and tropical fruit trees (including a lemon tree and cacao tree), the greenhouses also host geographically themed areas. My favorite: the koi pond in the Asian Rainforest. Millennial alert: House 4 is home to cacti and succulents!

18. Relax at Tipico

Sip a pour-over from this café/roaster located in the Front Park area. Bring a laptop and work away in the airy space for a taste of the digital nomad lifestyle, or just swing by for a bag of their single-origin beans.

19. Shop at the West Side Bazaar

Head to Buffalo’s West Side for all things global: this small-biz incubator features vendors selling treats and treasures from around the world. You’ll find cool merch such as cult-fave black soap from Ghana, handcrafted jewellery from South Sudan, and locally made macramé plant hangers (naturally!), plus tasty eats like Burmese street food and traditional dishes from Puebla, Mexico.

20. Check out the architecture at Market Arcade

Shop, eat or just feast your eyes on the Beaux-Arts/Neo-Classical architecture of the Market Arcade, a beautifully restored circa-1892 shopping arcade. Hot picks: handmade souvenirs from local artists at Buffalo Arcade and artisan snacks for foodie dogs and cats at Buffalo Bakery.

Even once you’ve decided where to stay in Goa and that you’d prefer the more relaxing south over north, there are still quite a lot of beaches to choose from! With the help of our local expert, Jules, we’re going to look at the best ones to visit. This guide is all about Agonda Beach, Goa!

Agonda is said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Goa, and I have to say I agree. It is clean, is the closest to silky white sand you’ll find, and has huge green cliffs closing in on either end. When you are swimming in the very clean and usually friendly sea, it can feel magical. Like the paradise you see in movies.

Located about an hour and a half from Dabolim Airport via taxi (or accessible via local bus from Panjim or Margao), Agonda is one of the busier and more popular beaches along the southern coast. It still feels like a sleepy beach with its own sense of community that comes alive in season.

Nightlife is optional in the form of live music, drinks at a few of the bars, and lots of great restaurants. Don’t expect nightclubs or beach raves to be common. There’s really only Leopard Valley, which is where you can find a late-night rave scene monthly or weekly depending on the time of year.

Agonda has a welcoming vibe about it, it’s big enough to explore but small enough to feel at home and comfortable. I wouldn’t say it would be the best place to meet new traveling friends through accommodation as you are unlikely to find shared rooms or hostels. But the yoga scene and the bars are perfect to meet other like-minded people along the way.

Do note, same as all other beaches in the South, Agonda usually opens for tourists from November through to April. Between May and October the beach is usually deserted with all beach huts dismantled and the monsoon season setting in.

Places to Eat in Agonda

Zest

I really love this place. Like really. This is a vegan spot that serves the most instagrammable and delicious food. The fruit granola bowl with a coconut chai latte is a dream. They have amazing lunch options that include de-constructed sushi bowls and glorious pizza. There’s a really comfortable seating area which is a perfect place to take some time out of the heat. Do not miss this place if you make it to Agonda Beach!

Indah Desa & Kopi Desa

Indah Desa is a great beachfront restaurant that serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I have eaten here quite a few times and always find myself going back because I know it is going to be good. They also offer a BBQ service at the table which I haven’t tried but looks fun. You can also stay here at their beach huts which line the front and are also along the back.

Kopi Desa is the sister place which is a bar further down south of the main road. This place gets busy in the evening and serves great cocktails. I recommend trying both places!

La Dolce Vita

If you are craving some Italian, La Dolce Vita is where you should be heading. I believe it is Italian-owned and serves very authentic dishes.

Fatima’s Corner

This cute place is set right at the entrance to the main beach road in Agonda. It has been around for years and serves great, authentic Indian food. Everything from North Indian food to momos to South Indian.

Places to Stay in Agonda

Agonda Beach itself stretches about two kilometers long, so there are quite a few beachfront places to stay. I’d, of course, suggest staying at one of these spots for the ultimate holiday experience! Book one of the stilted huts with their own, private sea-facing balconies. Though do note the roar of the sea can be surprisingly loud so if you’re a light sleeper take a hut a little further back!

All the places can pretty much be found online whether on one of the booking sites or with their own site. There are so many places to choose from, so this is one of the places I suggest booking in advance. This way you don’t have to walk up and down the beach with your bargaining hat on.

Nearly all spots have a restaurants and many include breakfast. Nothing spells out vacation more than breakfast on the beach! The rate of rooms really depends on how close you are to the beach, and whether it is sea facing. Rooms should range from Rs 1,500 – 5,000+ per night. Agonda is bit more on the premium side compared to the other beaches in South Goa.

Jardim Y Mar

Jardim y Mar

This is my go-to place to stay in Agonda as it’s located in the middle of the beach making it feel like either end is not too far of a walk away. The staff is really nice, they have different room options, and the menu is huge and delicious. They also have a great common area in the shade which is definitely needed during the day. I have stayed in their beach-facing stilted hut, the courtyard beach huts with not so much beach to be seen, and also their concrete rooms which have A/C. As expected, the beach facing stilted hut comes with a much higher price tag. In high season, you could pay up to Rs 5,000 per night. Book now

H2O

This place is located just opposite Zest, the amazing vegan place, and has a lot of rooms to offer. This is one of the bigger places that has a big restaurant and bar and live music options. They have their own sun beds on the beach, which not every place has. Book now

Harmonium

Harmonium is set at the far end of the northern side of the beach, closer to the river. These rooms are a little more luxurious than some of the others, more like proper rooms rather than beach huts. They have some great bean bags out front to lounge on and this side of the beach feels deserted. Book now

The Tribe

The Tribe

This is more for the jungle goers than the beach lovers. The Tribe is set back from the beach and is more inland. You can live among wildlife and learn about permaculture at this eco-resort. If you want to take trips to the beach but feel more of a sense of a community than The Tribe is more for you. It’s not a hostel but has that feel to it. Book now

What Else Is There to Do?

Go bird watching

Walk up to the far north side of the beach where the sea meets the river. There should be one or two people offering you a riverboat trip to go bird watching. Even if you aren’t a keen birdwatcher like myself, I highly recommend waking up early for this. It really is such a peaceful and beautiful way to see sleepy, tropical Goa. Captain, who is the boat driver in the white captain hat, will point out all the colorful birds along the way whilst you take in the breathtaking views.

Go on a boat trip

Take up the offer of a boat trip to see the dolphins, for sunset, or to one of the other beaches along the coast. This is a great way to see the beauty of Agonda from the middle of the sea. I recommend an early morning trip to avoid strong currents and choppy waves.

Walk along the beach

I know it is hard to step away from sunbathing and a good book, but I also recommend putting your Piña Colada down (or taking it along with you) and going for a nice walk to either end. The far north end is where the sea meets the river and on the far south end you can find some huge rocks to climb if you are feeling adventurous.

Go shopping

The main road that runs parallel to the beach has lots of cute shops selling goodies for great prices. Take a walk from one end to the other and treat yourself.

Rent a moped and explore

If you can ride a scooter, then it’s a great way to see some of the other beautiful beaches along the coast. Try riding to Cola Beach – though it has the most horrible bumpy road to conquer – Cabo de Rama, and the neighboring beach of Palolem.

Watch the cows at sunset

I have only seen this happen on Agonda Beach. All the restaurant and hotel owners gather up their food waste and put it out in boxes on the beach at sunset each day. The cows know this routine now and come in their 20s and 30s to snack on these veggie delicacies. It is a great view with the sun setting behind.

Beaches/Towns Nearby

The closest beach on the north side of Agonda is Cola Beach. This is a semi-secret beach with a beautiful, picturesque lagoon and a few places to stay. As mentioned above, the road leading down the Cola Beach is not the most friendly so be careful if you are on a scooter.

On the other side is Palolem Beach which is a bigger, busier beach. This beach has a lot more going on in the evenings and more of a backpacker vibe to it.

If you have the time I would suggest pairing a few nights stay in Agonda with a few nights in Patnem or Palolem.

The technological advancement that made travel easier and affordable is now facing unprecedented uncertainty as each nation is enacting stringent travel regulations. The good news is that popular travel destinations are opening, and a good number of airlines, trains, and international travel systems are beginning to pick up in some regions.

So, how can travellers safely explore a world with a potentially deadly virus and friendly people who might infect you? Is it safe to get on an airplane? Is visiting a wildlife reserve possible while ensuring social distancing? Is it safe to use a public restroom while on a road trip? These are some of the common questions that most travellers ask, and here is what you should know.

Before you travel

Before you book your flight, consider the COVID-19 statistics at your preferred destination. If the region has a higher rate of spread of coronavirus infections, there is a higher chance you will get infected and probably spread the disease when you return home.

Consider various types of transport

Generally, travelling heightens your chances of getting infected with coronavirus and spreading this disease. Some of these measures include staying at least six feet away from other people, wearing masks, washing hands frequently, and more.

Note that train stations, airports, and rest stops are places where travellers are more likely to get exposed to coronavirus in case one traveller is infected. Therefore, it’s important to stick to the travel guidelines set by the transportation authorities and healthcare system.

Think about accommodation

Generally, you are less likely to get infected with coronavirus while camping in the woods than staying in a busy big hotel in a busy city. This is because hotels, restaurants, and other similar spaces are all shared environment.

Some hotels have implemented stringent risk-reduction protocols. For example, staff and guests may be required to wear masks while in public areas, practice a higher level of hygiene, and more. Still, your best bet is to choose the accommodation option that will not expose you to a higher risk of infection.

Consider what you will be doing

All activities that place within six feet of another person you’re not travelling with are risky. Just focus on the things you can do while travelling that will allow you to keep a safe distance from other people. For example, camping, hiking, and even dining in a place that has implemented safety protocols can help you stay safe.

On the other hand, crowded spaces like concerts, museums, and other public events might be at a much higher risk of getting exposed to coronavirus. If you must visit such crowded spaces, it is important to keep your mask on to reduce the risk of infection transmission.

More tips to stay safe while traveling

Before you get out of your home, keep in mind that COVID-19 is a respiratory infection. Once you understand the different ways the virus can enter your body, it will be easier to stay safe. Therefore, it makes sense to check several high-profile health-related platforms such as official websites for WHO, CDC, Mayo Clinic, and HealthLine to learn more about coronavirus and how to stay safe. Other tips include;

• Practice good personal hygiene
• Wash your hands regularly or sanitize whenever necessary
• If you feel unwell, don’t travel
• Breathe easy while wearing a mask
• Get travel insurance
• Stay clear of travellers with a cold or cough

Wondering what the best things to do in Tenerife are? Here’s all you need to know on where to go, what to eat, and more from a former expat!

Beautiful beaches and sizzling nightlife are two of Tenerife’s main draws – but there’s also the colonial charm, unique cuisine, and varied topography that can allure even the pickiest traveler. Known as “the island of eternal springtime,” Tenerife is the perfect destination to visit all year long.

As a nine-month resident of Tenerife, I spent a good amount of time traveling around this tiny paradise, and have compiled up all of my recommendations about the very best the island has to offer. 

I’ve divided this guide up into a few different sections:

• Food
• Drinks
• Experiences
• Hikes 
• Cities

What to Eat in Tenerife

I love food, and tasting the local cuisine is definitely a top priority when I travel anywhere. Spanish food is famous the world over for being delicious, and Tenerife’s island food is definitely no exception. If anything, I liked it more than the rest of Spain! Because it’s an island, Tenerife’s food focuses more on what’s local, easily available, and fresh. They grow tons of their own fruits and vegetables, which you can find either at a grocery store such as Mercadona or at any local market.

Goat and Goat Cheese

Tenerife is a mountainous, volcanic island, so animals such as cows aren’t much of an option. However, goats are perfectly happy to scamper up and down cliffs that would give anyone a serious case of vertigo. For this reason, skip any beef entrees you might find and order the cabra you see on a menu. It’s local, stewed for a long time in a mix of spices until it’s fork-tender and delicious. The goat cheese is also fantastic. You can find a wide range of varieties in both markets and supermarkets. My favorite was a slightly aged cheese with pimientos, but everyone has their own tastes!

Seafood

You’re on an island! The seafood in Tenerife is fresh, plentiful, and relatively cheap. Octopus especially is a popular dish here. Pictured above is one of the tapas they served at one of my favorite local joints. It features octopus, pimientos, a quick-pickled onion, and drizzled with a vinaigrette made with the fruity local olive oil. It’s just about as perfect a dish as you can imagine.

Mojo

Mojo is a sauce that comes in both red and green varieties (mojo rojo and mojo verde, respectively) that is delicious on e v e r y t h i n g. It is truly the Ranch Dressing of the Canaries. The green sauce has a cilantro base, while the red sauce is slightly spicy, with a pepper base. It’s often served with salty boiled potatoes (another specialty of the island, but nothing to write home about).

Ropa Vieja

Not to be confused with that bag of clothes you’ve been meaning to take to Goodwill, ropa vieja is a delicious, slightly spicy dish you’ll actually enjoy getting. It’s made of oh-so-soft shredded meat, garbanzos, potatoes, and (occasionally) red peppers, all swimming harmoniously together in a thin but rich broth. As an alternative, you can also try carne fiesta, grilled meat which normally comes served up with a side of fries.  

Just like, all the fruits and vegetables

Contrary to what you might believe so far in this post, I don’t eat a lot of meat usually. In fact, at home I normally only cook vegetarian dishes. During my time on Tenerife, I’d normally go to the market at the beginning of the week and stock up on whatever local produce was in season. At Mercadona, the local grocery store, they marked where the foods came from, so in an effort to be eco-conscious I’d try and pick the ones that were from Canarias. I was never disappointed with my decisions: the volcanic soil makes for some seriously delicious produce. I’d especially recommend the bananas. There are tons of banana farms all around the island!

What to Drink in Tenerife

As most mom memes on the Internet will tell you, drinks play an essential role in y̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶b̶u̶r̶g̶e̶o̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶l̶c̶o̶h̶o̶l̶i̶s̶m̶ staying sane. On vacation, you can indulge even more with that treat yo’self mentality popularized by t̶h̶e̶ ̶f̶i̶n̶a̶n̶c̶i̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶s̶e̶l̶f̶-̶d̶e̶s̶t̶r̶u̶c̶t̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶a̶d̶u̶l̶t̶s̶ ̶o̶n̶ “Parks and Recreation. “(P.S. no judgement here this is actually a lot of self-deprication).

Vino Tinto (and maybe a caña)

As mentioned before, the volcanic soil on the island produces a lot of delicious fruit, including grapes. Want to know how to make grapes even better? Smash ‘em up, ferment for a bit, and then drink. The wine on Tenerife is delicious, dirt cheap, and available everywhere. Most restaurants (especially guanchinches) produce their own wine! If you want to take some home, they don’t sell it by the bottle. Instead, you’ll have to bring your own container and they’ll fill it up. I once saw a woman in my hiking group arguing with a waitress for a good five minutes because she only had a plastic bottle with her. She eventually managed to convince the waitress to give her the wine, but with the strict promise that she’d drink it by that night. (This was the best hiking group I’ve ever been in.) Beer is also widely available, and it’s one of life’s greatest pleasures to sit on an outdoor terrace on a warm day and sip a nice, cool caña (because nobody says “cerveza,” gringo).

Mixed Drinks

Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I should include this one, as, for me at least, it left me wishing for the sweet embrace of death. However, if you have a bit more self-awareness than me (and the bar you go to isn’t manned by a friggin psychopath) there is no reason you shouldn’t enjoy a nice mixed drink at the end of a long day watching Teen Wolf with your German housemate. The picture you see here is not a tiny bottle of Coke, but rather a full sized bottle of Coke with enough rum for a full-sized Koi fish to swim through. Don’t be like me and take it as a challenge. Sip wisely. Oh, and BTW rum is also produced on the Canary Islands so you can make your binge drinking a cultural experience!

Coffee

Coffee is something else you can find locally produced in the Canaries. There are plenty of coffee shops everywhere, ranging from bars where have to stand to slurp your java to chain coffee joints in the more tourist-y section. You can even buy the local beans at the grocery store! Coffee is also drunk after meals often; I guess this is to negate the effects of some of that vino you had at lunch.

Fruity frozen drinks

At my heart, I am but a mere white girl trying to make my way through this life. And I love me a fruity frozen drink. If the fruit is good and fresh (like it is on Tenerife), the day is warm (like it is on Tenerife), and there’s a beach nearby (like there is on Tenerife), it creates the perfect environment to sit back and slowly savor something delicious.

The Local Liquor

There’s plenty of local liquor (like the rum I talked about earlier) to try on Tenerife. The most popular and well known, rum miele, is a honey rum produced on the island. However, there’s a plethora of different types out there. The one pictured above is a small shot that a grandpa gave me after I’d eaten at his restaurant, to drink as a digestif. Let me tell you, it was a way to finish out a meal.

Sightseeing Things to Do in Tenerife

Stargazing

The Canary Islands are a starlight preserve, meaning that light pollution is severely restricted. Coming from the neon-lit nights of South Korea as I was, this was incredible. At night sometimes I’d go up on the roof of my apartment building just to look at the sky. The stars are even more incredible if you escape from a city or town and head out into the wilderness. You can check out the tour below for an idea of what you’ll get, but basically you’ll be taken out by professionals with professional equipment to see all the celestial bodies at their best. Note that even though the days in Tenerife are warm, the nights can get chilly so make sure you dress appropriately! Book a tour here

Surfing

The sea swirls fiercely around the Canary Islands, making them the ideal spot for surfing. My unathletic self went exactly once, at the request of my much more athletic friend, and let me tell you, although it wasn’t the sport for me (and I was, tbh, hungover and exhausted from staying out the night before with the aforementioned friend), that the instructors we had were excellent. They made sure we slathered on sunscreen and stretched out before we got into the water, and provided boards and wetsuits (that water is cold but wetsuits are actually amazing) for us. If you already know how to surf, there are plenty of shops and even hotels and hostels that will rent you out a board, if you didn’t bring your own.

Beaches

Did you think you could read a listacle about a paradise island and not hear about the beaches? The beaches of Tenerife range from small, scrubby local beaches to sprawling, beautiful black sand beaches packed with German tourists trying to pack on a tan. I will warn you that quite a few of the beaches are nude beaches, which shouldn’t be a surprise for those of you acquainted at all with beach culture in Europe. If you don’t feel like your birthday suit should be shown off to the sun gods, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear clothes: my poor white ginger body was guarded by an enormous hat, a sun shrug, and further hidden under an umbrella. My friend told me I looked like a middle-aged lady, but I’d rather look like that than a lady bug.

Getting out to the Ocean

There are a lot of different tours you can do out in the bright blue seas surrounding Tenerife, ranging from fishing to dolphin watching! As with the beaches, you might as well make the most of your time on (or rather, off the coast of) an island. 

Road Tripping

It’s both cheap (starting at 15 euros a day) and easy (so long as you have an international license) to rent a car on Tenerife. Car rental shops are in virtually every city, and the people working there are often trilingual, able to speak English, German, and, of course, Spanish. I will warn you that most of the cars available are manual and that renting an automatic is almost double the price, but some are available. When my friends visited me, we would always rent a car to make our way around the island. Buses on Tenerife are pretty bad, and it can be hard to get to a lot of places. It’s also really nice to take your time and pull off at any interesting places you see. 

Hiking in Tenerife

When I was in Tenerife, I usually hiked at least once a week with a group I’d joined. Hiking around Tenerife is a little different from hikes in other places I’ve done. For one, the UV Index is crazy high in Tenerife, which meant that I always wore long sleeves, leggings, a hat, and, of course, sunscreen no matter how hot it was. Secondly, the hikes around Tenerife might not have as many amenities as you’re used to, such as conveniently-located information centers, water fountains, or toilets. Make sure to bring everything you need, and to pack plenty of water! Last, Tenerife has hugely different levels of hikes, ranging from a flat stroll that’s no more difficult than walking around a mall to hugely difficult, steep climbs where you will pass goats that look like they’re fearing for their balance. Make sure to thoroughly research what, exactly, you’re getting yourself into before you start a hike.

Mount Teide

Teide National Park comprised most of the center of the island, and Mount Teide – which is actually both Spain’s tallest mountain and a volcano that might explode and kill us all one day – is easy to see from almost all of the island. Teide National Park is a true nature reserve that I hiked in at least once a month.

If you hike in Teide National Park, you can also get enough elevation that you’re actually above the clouds. This creates a phenomenon known as mar de nuebes, literally meaning sea of clouds, as the clouds slowly look like they’re lapping up against the side of the mountain. Of course, being above the clouds means you aren’t even going to get the shade one can provide, so again, make sure to bring a hat.

Masca

Masca is one of the most visited spots on Tenerife, and it’s not hard to see why. The mountains and valleys here are truly gorgeous, but they’re not for the faint of heart! It’s easiest by far to get to Masca in a car – especially if you’re hiking – and the roads are steep and full of switchbacks. It can also get dangerously windy around Masca, to the point where I have struggled to open a car door and decided (along with my group) that if we tried walking any we’d likely be blown out to sea.

Anaga Forest

You might not expect a tropical island known for its massive volcano to have much in the way of forests, but Tenerife – diverse as its landscape is – has a lot to offer. The woods are cool and quiet, but often open up to let you see magnificent views. There are several sylvan hiking spots to be found around the island, but Anaga is perhaps one of the most famous, and offers several hikes that aren’t too difficult.

Guimar

Guimar offers a very easy hike that snakes from the seaside into the desert and back. The black volcanic soil, desert plants, and bright blue ocean create a scene – and unique color palette – that I’ve never seen anywhere else. Guimar is probably one of the hikes that’s easy to access without a car, as you can start hiking directly from the town instead of in the middle of a national park. 

Taganana

I’ll be straight with you. M friend and I first decided to go to Taganana just because of how so darned fun it is to say. It, like the other hikes listed here, is gorgeous but in an end-of-land type way. The sheer mountains drop straight into the ocean, and because Taganana is located on the north coast, it’s often overcast.

Towns to Visit in Tenerife

Puerto de la Cruz

Known by the locals simply as Puerto. For all of its 36-flavors-of-ice-cream-type charm, Puerto de la Cruz still holds a good sense of authenticity when compared to all of the touristic, Brit-saturated cities to the south. Puerto has one of my favorite views of the island: an old Spanish fort, peppered with palm trees, with a view of the ocean swirling down below. There’s a huge seawall that you can walk along from the fort that goes outside of Puerto a ways, which makes it a lovely walk after dinner.

La Orotava

La Orotava, the tiny town I lived in for those nine months I spent on Tenerife, is known for being one of the most beautiful on the island. Time and again I was told the same story: down in Puerto lived the poor sailors and fisherman, whereas all of the money – largely possessed by the rich farmers – made its way to La Orotava. This town truly is gorgeous. It’s painted in different colors, and the buildings have such an attention to detail. Small parks are also dotted through La Orotava, which makes it a delightful spot just to wander around for an afternoon. 

Plus, there are a lot of cats who like to hang out on the roofs and they are all pretty friendly.

La Laguna and Santa Cruz

La Laguna and Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, are so close the cities pretty much blend together. While La Laguna boasts historic, beautiful streets, Santa Cruz has more people and a bigger nightlife. 

La Laguna is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the Canaries, but unlike La Orotava, it’s much bigger. A few days could be spent wandering around these streets, especially if you take the tram over to Santa Cruz.

As the capital, Santa Cruz has a lot to offer. It has everything from dive bars (one actually owned by the only other American I met living on the island) to nice restaurants. It’s also convenient to travel not only to La Laguna from Santa Cruz but other cities around the island.

Playa Los Americas

Did you come to Tenerife to party? Have you been bored this entire time by my talks of scenic hikes and colonial architecture? Well, get ready for a TONE CHANGE because baby, it’s time to talk about Los Americas.

Los Americas is the place you want to go if you want to party and got bored of Vegas. I only really went there once, and was offered mary jane by four o’clock (in the afternoon) and coke by seven. Straight-laced teacher that I am, I went home to watch Harry Potter instead but no judgement if you want to indulge in that and ah, all the other pleasures Los Americas has to offer.

It may not surprise you to hear Los Americas is among the most touristic cities on the island, where people will speak to you in every language but Spanish because real Spaniards are nowhere to be found.

The beaches are lovely, though, and you can catch glimpses of some of the other islands.

Even once you’ve decided where to stay in Goa and that you’d prefer the more relaxing south over north, there are still quite a lot of beaches to choose from! With the help of our local expert, Jules, we’re going to look at the best ones to visit. First up is this little guide to Patnem Beach, Goa!

I, Jules, find the beaches in South Goa are perfect for some me-time rather than the usual friend-finding adventures that go hand-in-hand with backpacking in North Goa. There aren’t as many hostels or common areas, so it’s more of a peaceful retreat whether you go solo or with a partner or friend.

Located almost two hours from Dabolim Airport in a taxi right between Palolem and Galgibaga, Patnem Beach is one of my favorites in the South. I’ve been going for over a decade now! It has definitely gotten a lot busier with a few more sun beds lining the beaches. However, it still has the same tranquil charm as it always did.

I like to compare evenings here to those you see on Pinterest with the candlelit tables out on the beach, the moon, and the stars clear in the sky, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. It is literally the perfect date-night location or perfect for the need-some-time-away-from-my-backpack evenings!

It is a small beach, maybe only 1km or so long, with lots of great sea-facing restaurants dotted along it. There is one very thin main road leading down to the beach which means the flow of traffic is basically non-existent. It is a quiet stretch where you won’t find places playing loud music or parties into the night.

The sea is usually calm and if you get the tide timings right, the sand can be perfect for a morning or sunset run. I do appreciate holidays, and morning runs are not always compatible with vacationing, so please replace run with walk if necessary.

Do note, same as all other beaches in the South, Patnem usually opens for tourists from November through to April. Between May and October the beach is usually deserted with all beach huts dismantled and the monsoon season setting in.

Places to Eat in Patnem

My actual favorite place in Goa, I think, which is a pretty big claim. But I have my favorite table, favorite drink, and favorite breakfast, and I can’t seem to veer away from any of them! They have the most delicious vegetarian food on the menu for breakfast, lunch, and an early dinner. I believe it is French-owned (I may be wrong) so the salads and a lot of the dishes feel very European.

The Home Rosti (with extra mushrooms) is my go to meal accompanied with a strawberry or banana lassi, and if you have the space, a chocolate brownie to share. But genuinely everything on the menu is delicious. The service is great and they have hammocks and a cool floor seating area if you just need a space to chill in the shade.

Jaali Cafe

This is a newcomer on the scene. I made sure to make a special trip to try it out when I was last in the South. It did not disappoint. The menu again has a European feel and they have lots of tapas-type dishes that are perfect for sharing. Jaali is located on the main road so doesn’t have a beach view but instead has a breezy, laid back vibe about it. There is also a great boutique shop in the Cafe selling some beautiful bits you won’t want to miss out on.

Namaste, Papayas, and Nirvana

There are lots of sea-facing places to eat all along Patnem though I do remember eating at Namaste a few more times than others. I would recommend taking the time to try a few if you are there for a few nights. They usually have fresh fish from the day’s catch which can be chosen and grilled in the tandoor – ask for butter garlic or Goan red masala depending on your taste buds. This is where in the evening you will find the candle lit tables out on the beach, replacing the sun beds that are usually there in the day. During the hot sun days, take a seat inside the shacks where they usually have floor-seated tables with plenty of cushions.

April 20

For some delicious Indian food try April 20, which is set back a bit from the beach. They have a sister restaurant in Agonda and the food is great. I remember going here once with some friends years ago and the waiter dropping a tray of about eight drinks down my back but here I am still recommending them which shows the food must be great!

Beach Huts in Patnem

Where to Stay in Patnem Beach

I have spent many a time walking up and down this beach on arrival, bargaining my way down to the best price for a last minute beach hut stay. I have never booked in advance but depending on the time of year and your bargaining ability you can also book in advance on booking.com for a lot of places. Not all, but most of them.

Remember you will pay more for a beach hut that faces the sea. The further back you go, the cheaper it is. Depending on the time of year and how far back or in front the hut is, prices can range from 500rs – 3000rs per night. If travelling around Christmas time, double any expected prices.

Turtle Hill

This is a very fancy place to stay with the prices being on the much higher end of the scale – 5k+ per night. But you really get what you pay for here with very luxurious beach huts either facing the sea or located a bit further behind and in the garden area. These are the kind of huts you want to live in forever, so if you find they have availability, I suggest you treat yourself! Book here

Funtastic Beach Huts

I have been staying at these beach huts for years. It isn’t because they are anything majorly special but they are in a great location. Very close to Home, the restaurant – and the owners are nice. There is a great hut just above the reception desk which is on stilts and faces the sea though I recommend having a walk up and down the beach to see what takes your fancy. Book here

Home

This place also has rooms to offer. They aren’t beach huts or sea-facing. However, if you are more of a concrete-room-need-actual-walls kind of person then this is a great little place. Book here

Bougainvillea Patnem

These are very beautiful standalone beach huts on more of the southern side. They’re even quieter than the quiet north side of Patnem Beach. They seem a little bit more luxurious than the other standard beach huts found along the front. Book here

Things to Do in Patnem Beach

Kayaking

Rent a kayak and get yourself up and out early in the morning before the current gets too strong. Take the kayak all the way to the south side of the beach and past the neighboring Rajbaga Beach to where the sea meets the river. You can then kayak into this river and give your arms a rest. I once met a Mumma dolphin and her baby here who gracefully swam by, showing their fins occasionally while I was terrified I would fall in, in excitement.

Kayaks can be rented from most places along the beach. Do not take your non-waterproof valuables because you are almost guaranteed to fall in especially when trying to get out of the sea at the end. This happened to me as we tried to surf a wave to shore which was great until the kayak flipped!

Walk to the River

If kayaking isn’t your thing then I suggest doing what is written above but just walking instead. You will need to walk around the big rock/cliff face that separates Patnem Beach from Rajbaga Beach. There isn’t really much happening on Rajbaga beach, not sure why, and head all the way down. If you are lucky, there may be a fisherman willing to take you on a little boat trip.

Boat Trip

There will be offers of boat trips. They’re great to see dolphins, visit next door Palolem and Butterfly Beach, or enjoy the sunset from the water. I would recommend trying it at least once. It is really lovely to get out into the vast blue sea on one of their boats. I think morning trips are always nicer as the waves are usually smaller, and you get less boat rock in choppy waters.

If you do decide on a dolphin trip, please let your boat driver know you don’t want to chase any dolphins but are happy to see from a distance and not scare them. Dolphin chasing is a big problem as they really don’t like the sound of the motor.

Yoga Classes

If you want to combine your Patnem beach stay with some timetabled yoga then Kranti has a large school located right on the beach. They offer drop-in classes as well as retreats and teacher training. I did a drop-in class here, the facilities are great and the common area was very cool and welcoming. There are quite a few other yoga schools along the beach which may also offer drop-in classes. You can’t beat a bit of sunset yoga!

Beaches and Towns Nearby Patnem

Palolem is the neighboring beach on Patnem’s northern side. I would definitely visit as it’s so close. You just need to walk along the beach and then take the road alongside Turtle Hill. Ask any locals walking by and they will all point you in the right direction. This shouldn’t take longer than 15 minutes. However, if you don’t feel like walking, you can hail a rickshaw from the main road for 100rs or less.

Palolem is the busier, louder, bigger beach with the most beautiful palm trees lining the shore all leaning towards the sun. A lot of people stay here because it has more to do. But I have always stayed on Patnem and taken the short rickshaw journey over to Palolem for any nights out. Depending on the type of holiday you are looking for you could do it the other way and stay on Palolem and visit Patnem.
