Hi Bitter Truth, clearly you've never once followed Rachel's journey or this blog or else you would have never made this comment. She lived in Goa for five years and returned right before her death in May 2019. Trust me, the rose-color tinted glasses were off early on in her expat experience and she still found it to be a place she loved for all its ups and downs. She literally used to have a "This is India" series that detailed her time there. I hope you feel better getting this off your chest as you clearly had a negative experience -- she passed away over a year and half ago now, so I guess we'll never see if she had Stockholm syndrome or not.

Also it's spelled hygiene ;)

Thought I'd translate or sum up your well-written squishy comparison post of merida vs goa. And I write as someone who's spent much time in both -- though def not 5 years (unimaginable) in India.
In every single dimension you wrote or can imagine except cost of labor services, Merida tops out Goa. It's not even close.
I know its a tough tightrope for you to walk since you've got books and income links , etc wrapped up in India but I don't. Goa is a somewhat nice beach area in the midst of a pathetic and Western hostile environment - be it cultural, infrastructure, political, personal, etc. etc.
Now, even adding in the fact that you're an attractive and young white person of some means --- which assured that you experienced the best possible treatment-- and assuming or hoping that you were in love - and thus affording you a rose colored tint to 'magical Goa', it is clear in reading between lines that visavis Mex beaches, Goa was and is a dump.
I wish you'd mentioned the number one difference between the two: HYGENE. In Mexico, where I'm now, you see people brooming their sidewalks, I've seen them soaping their streets, the humblest fondas scrub down their ranges and floors daily, the cheapest rooms are hospital clean. Mex is a civilized country - with its own problems.
You overstayed in that dump of a country but that's behind you now. With time, that Stockholm effect will fade and you'll see it clearly.
You've made the right move and I bid you peace.

Thank you! I had this reluctance about moving to Mexico after 9 years of South East Asia. You answered my #1 Question, how do you compare SE Asia and Mexico/ Central America... Time to experience something different.

Input rules ! Change is life...

Hi Joy. I'm happy to help. As you know, there is nowhere like Goa ... it's truly one of a kind, unique place. Merida is awesome though and were we hope to build a house in the village outside of town in Cholol has at least the jungle vibes of Goa if not the party/people vibes

Thank you so much for the comparison. I lived in Goa for 5 years and still miss it. It was my magic home. I am have been living in the states for 1.5 years and it is time to get out and back to a place with lots of people around. Someone suggested Merida and your article really helped me understand more about it. I am going to come and check it out. Hugs.

Hey Rachel. I was your Uber driver in Atlanta who picked you up from the Mexican Embassy after you had obtained your VISA so that you could buy a car in Mexico. I dropped you off to meet up for lunch with some friends. It was indeed a pleasure meeting you and your warm spirit. I wish you much success in your future endeavors. I will follow you and your adventures and will live vicariously through you and your blog. Thanks for sharing with us.

This is awesome! I assume you still have a bit of settling in to do in Mexico, but I am so happy the experience has been a positive one so far. I would love to go to Mexico when I return to the states next year. I've only been to resort towns {as they are always mentioned as "safer"} but you've definitely inspired me to branch out. Thanks x
