Loved your article! I’m curious if you can tell us how corona has effected the way of living in Mexico. Can Americans move there during this time? Will work be hard to find? My husband is a general contractor and we do really well in the US. I want us to get out though, Mexico is calling my name. Thank you.

Hello :-) I’m still a few years out from moving to Mexico and reference this regularly to keep me focused on the dream. I just found Rachel’s blog before she left us and have read every word more than once. A bright light, an inspiration, and a brave soul who didn’t let life pass her by, I was shocked and saddened by her early passing. Her hard work, passion for new experiences, and magnetic personality live on in her words and her encouragement. Very informative, well organized and detailed! We just purchased property in Tulum and are planning to start building next year. Our target date to be there full time is 2022, so this information has been really helpful, as we will need to understand how to do all of these things soon. I have found it challenging to get this kind of detail around these tasks, so thank you!

I am impressed with thorough review of all the basics in one blog ! I am retired now and am looking at Mexico. I have watched a lot of ‘Tangerine Travels’ on You Tube…with young couple living in Mexico thus far…my dream has been to live — as you say, near/in RAIN FOREST type area but ideally also have customary shopping etc possible within 45 mins or so — and outside Merida sounds like its very interesting indeed ! I have 3 rescue cats and a house so, so many steps it can seem impossible to do…but Im going to keep looking, reading and asking questions and I think Rocket Language was suggested as very good (its new version) for Americans on one blog as well.
I had wanted to find a group in Texas (DFW) area ideally for those that may share the common interest – of looking at feasibility of moving to Mexico — but thus far only have found FB sites of Expats already in Mexico, not ‘pre-expats’ ha …

Hi Rachel, thank you for your article, very informativ. We have lived 30 years in Ibiza Spain, speak Spanish, have lived 8 years on Goa, 8 years in Bali, and the last 5 years in Thailand where immigration laws have changed and it is getting more and more difficult. We plan to come to Mexico on a permanent Visa and go to Ajijic as we are retired and places n the jungle are not any more the solution. It looks that Ajijic has a vibrant expat scene. I am still struggling with the health insurance and hope we can find one for Mexico only as our Cigna International is slowly reaching our limits.

There are villages outside Merida that are in the jungle with great jungle vibes but they won’t have good internet. I’m in the same situation – it’s the satellite type internet, not fiber optic or wires. Our dogs and cat came with us from India and they love it here!

Happy to find your blog. I currently line in Thailand but I am so tired of the visa drama that I plan now to move to Mexico and somewhere around Merida seems a good fit. My dream is to live on natural jungle private land with my 4 dogs ( am bringing them from Thailand) somewhere less expensive off the beaten path. I do need wifi to teach online…but besides that I love to stay at home with my dogs…tips on basic simple local style housing rentals in natural areas with few neighbors? Happy Building I will be following along…..

I recently decided to move to Mexico and am currently in Guadalajara! Merida sounds like an amazing place to live- enjoy it! xx
