I am a foriegner fron uk.
I have been asked to leave my accomodation where I have stayed seaon time 3 years I have 3 days to move out & I have alot of furniture.
Is this allowed I didnt do anything wrong…

Hi Rachel, that’s a lovely blog you’re writing and sharing your experience with others. I, myself am going solo to Goa tomorrow and would like to have your recommendations on safe places to stay at in Calangute/Baga or even any beach that you’d like to suggest since you don’t prefer Baga. My idea is not to stay far from most happening areas. Are there any options with beautiful surroundings/view and below 2k per night? Also, since I’ll be staying alone, what else can be done in Goa besides just going to beaches and cafés?

i agree with Rachel, They break their spirit and treat the elephants cruelly in order to do what they want them to do.
I hope they will follow Thailand’s lead. Their are very few places now where you can ride an elephant. The amount of refuges for elephants is growing. All these elephants are rescued from places where they were once ridden. I went to the Elephant nature park in the north of Thailand where there is no riding of elephants but you can get up close, pat them, go with them into the river and splash around. each elephant has a mahout to look after them. . There are at least 3 of these refuges that i know of in thailand and one in cambodia. I hope one day India will be like that too. ..

All the places with elephants here offer rides and I’m skeptical that they care for the elephants and don’t still trap wild ones – but if I did recommend one it would be Sahakari and just looking at them, not riding them

Hi Rachel, I’m early 50’s and taking my Daughter to Goa at easter. can you recommend an elephant experience? the websites are so varied but we’re not really into elephant shows or rides etc, just want to see and spend time with elephants. Some experiences have an overnight stay in mud huts in the jungle – would we be safe as 2 females?

In reply to Trudi. Hi Trudi, yes the plantations are open in the monsoon, check out sahakari spice plantation. on the water though, you won't find places in the monsoon because they take down the shacks for the rainy season.

Hi Rachel, I’m planning on travelling to Goa for a couple of days this July on my own ( I’m in my early 50’s). One of the days I would like to spend touring a spice plantation and the other day just relaxing by the beach ( weather permitting of course ) . Can you recommend a decent place to stay on the waterfront , and a spice plantation that would be open for tours? Thank you

Quick note on some other comments- yes there can be theft, this happens in any country. I have had my camera stolen from a restaurant in Barcelona. Every country has this issue, as you said, just because its known as a ‘hippie place’ doesn’t mean you should let your guard down as would not anywhere else. :) I think as a whole I found the hospitality in India to be of a high standard.

Hope you’re enjoying Bali despite the rain! I found Hippie in Heels before embarking to live in India for the first time and became an avid reader. Now I’ve traveled 26 states as a solo female traveller I always get the question: Is it safe to travel in India for girls? After traveling through 26 of 29 states, traveling in India is just like traveling in any country. I adore India and cannot wait to return this year. I love your blog and you have been a catalyst for my very India trip (now Im totally hooked on India). Thanks for writing enjoy your trip!

In reply to Rachel Jones. Yeah, I agree. I am sure I let my guard down here in Udaipur since I am so familiar with it now. It is just good to be aware of situations so you can keep them in the back of your mind. Plus if you have a scooty you can put your bag under the seat. :)

‘Nice tips Rachel!

I’ve heard a lot about the party scene in Goa, but like Thailand and Bali, you’ve just got to be careful and not go around alone at night. When I was a fresh graduate and travelled through Asia during my GAP year, I got so much hassle in Bali that I used to ask random European guys to pretend to be my husband in order to get the local lads off my case! I even got hit on by the waiter who served me my dinner!

India wasn’t too bad but there was a lot of contant staring by the local lads who seemed to be over-whelmed seeing two European girls travelling together – one blond with very fair skin, and one brunette, with very dark skin (me)!

When I went back to Bali a few years ago with husband and child in tow, the attitide of the local men was so different. They were polite, running around to make sure we had taxis and anything we needed. My husband was ill in Bali, and they sent over soup, a doctor, and a maid. All for free!

In reply to Betsy. Such a shame to hear that. I have heard of this happening to the mother of a friend of mine. There are some shady situations in Goa which is not too shocking I guess - but a lot of people think it's a happy hippy place and nothing bad will happen so they let their guard down.
