In reply to Mary Bartnikowski. Sorry I may have not mentioned in post I'm in arunachal pradesh which is restricted in NE, Sikkim and darjeeling actually arent in a permit zone. The permit is more difficult with a business visa which I have. I Was just in Hawaii and love it! Good for you: )

In reply to Esther of Local Adventurer. No its easy to get the permits. And its easy to get an extension. Here is what I did. I got my permit in Darjeeling and then went to Sikkim which is what the locals call it. I stayed a month discovering many different areas of Sikkim, hiking, staying in amazing unadvertised places on Himalayan peaks and volunteer teaching when I came across a school. I did all of this journey by train, share jeep, no planes, and solo. I got to Darjeeling after taking 2 trains for 21 hours across northern India from Rishikesh where I stayed in an ashram and taught yoga for 2 months. Incredible experience. Now I live on Kauai and lead private photography retreats on the most stunning island in the world.

I saw in the comment above that your having your permit arranged, however, it would be cool to know the process involved in aquiring one. I really want to do a year touring India. I would love to see the native parts as well.

In reply to Esther of Local Adventurer. I don't know really if it is hard because they are sorting it for me, but I think there are only so many per year, and unless you are with a tour - it is hard to get around up there.

Is it pretty difficult to get the permits? Is there a long waiting list? :) The curry recipe sounds delicious! I’ve only ever tried making Japanese and Thai curry, and if we’re craving Indian, we usually order or eat out. If it’s not too complicated, I might have to give it a try!
