Hello Rachel – The hubby and I are currently researching a move to Merida next year. We have an elderly Shih Tzu that will be along for the adventure. Can you share the name of an English speaking vet within Merida? I’d also be interested in contacting your pet sitter for availability. Thanks for sharing your experiences in Merida with us.

Hi Rachel, We live in Carolina Beach and we are thinking of selling the house and making the jump to Merida, We have looked at and visited Cozumel as well as Playa Del Carmen and are thinking Merida is more appropriate for us. Hi I have been coming to Mexico for years, usually FD or Vallarta, this year I want to come to Merida for 5 months, late Oct to end of March, Vallarta has the Mano o Mano (ad paper) I want to find a local rental in a Mexican col not gringo, does Merida have such a paper?

Hi Miryam,

I’ve been here about a year and only made a handful of good friends. It’s a slow roll esp for people in their 20’s because there aren’t many of us here – BUT there are SO many retirees here that get together and have coffee meet-ups and more, you can check out the american library to meet people, hennessy irish bar people hang out, and join some FB groups!

great info. I am thinking of moving to merida as life here is sweeter and I want to semi retire. I dont know anyone yet, except a very good masseuse and a uber driver. what more could I ask for? looking to buy and I rented a beautiful house in Garcia Jimenez but I feel a bit isolated. not serious. perhaps better in the long run than center with it always so full of people and tourists. any advise? great blog. thank you

I’m so glad to see things are going well, my partner and I have been living in Playa del Carmen for two years now and we think it’s time for a change, Merida sounds great, we just have no idea which areas would be best, we understand it’s a safe city but people seem to stay away from the Southern neighbourhoods, I’m bilingual but he speaks English only, but that’s not an issue, we love Mexico.

We will be taking a trip soon to explore the city and just go from there, there’s a ton of research for us to do in order to buy the perfect property for us (small but 2 bathrooms).

Wishing you both all the best and an easy move to your new home in Cholul when it’s ready.

Hey Rachel, what a big, exciting change. Wow! Congratulations on the engagement, also.
I’m just wondering if you’ve found any cool fitness classes in Merida similar to Orange Theory and F45? I know they have CrossFit, but am wondering what else. Considering of basing myself there for 4-8 weeks, but am eager to know what else is about :)

Hey Rachel, I’ve recently moved to Merida from L.A., and still settling in. Let me know if you want to get together for coffee sometime. I’m in Santiago. Also, would love a dog sitter recommendation if yours has any availability. We’ve got 3 with us here, and are feeling a little stuck-in-place until we find one.
