I have been a big fan of Kiwi.com for years now, writing about it several times and never sponsored by them but just showing you ways that I use them to save on flights. I get newsletters from them and a recent one said they had a new “nomad” tool. The Kiwi nomad tool is the coolest thing I’ve seen for travel this year and I had to share it with you because it’s definitely the cheapest way to find multicity flights that I’ve found.

To sum up what Kiwi does: they look for the cheapest way to get from point A to point B and do not only use “code shares” which would mean that if I went from New York to Paris, I might stop in London. A normal booking site like CheapOair (who I also love) or Google flights will only look for code-shares like flying American Airlines NY to London then a partner of theirs from London to Paris, like British Airways. What Kiwi will do is get that flight from NY to London on whatever airline is cheapest, then find a budget European flight from London to Paris that isn’t necessarily a partner of your first flight (aka Ryanair, EasyJet, etc). That would be you have to re-check in and it’s basically like taking a totally new flight. But, don’t fret – if you are delayed and miss that second flight, Kiwi has a policy to re-book you on another flight on whatever airline is leaving next, for free. It works as I’ve had to do it and they re-booked me with no hassle. If you were to book yourself on a NY to London flight on say, Google Flights or Expedia, then go to the Ryanair site and book a budget flight on to Paris, there is no safety net there if you miss that connection. THAT is why I love Kiwi! When isn’t Kiwi great? When you need a visa at the place of the layover or when you have a lot of luggage as you do have to check in as if it’s a new flight.

Okay, so moving on to the point of this post!

Kiwi’s Nomad Tool: the new cheapest way to find multicity flights

So in the past, I’ve written about how you can use Kiwi.com’s multicity tool to fly to a bunch of cities in one booking, super cheap. I linked to them above: 9 cities in Europe for $355 and 7 cities in India for under $200. I showed how you can basically put in your starting point and use their tool to go all around the place you want to visit at the cheapest way possible. If you haven’t read those, check it out as it kind of is something you need to understand before you read on.

All flight booking websites these days have multicity tools. Kiwi’s is unique because again, it doesn’t use code-shares and finds all the budget airlines.

This NEW tool, the “nomad” tool does something different and takes that multicity price down even lower. You can read about it here on their website where they show how their multicity tool got a low price of 442 Euros forPrague to London, Stockholm, Pari, and Rome. But when adding in the nomad feature, the price went down to 276 Euro.

What Nomad does is let you put in all the places you want to go and how many days you want to spend in each place. Hit the Nomad button and let their program do it’s magic.

No more figuring out which order to go in to get the cheapest flights and doing from point A to B to C, etc. You can just put in all the places you want to go, use their tool, and know that you are getting the cheapest flights – if you are flexible enough to travel in any random order between cities. It basically made the multicity tool even better. I know it seems like I work for Kiwi, but I don’t, haha! I am an affiliate of them but to be honest, they pay me a lot less than if I were an affiliate of Expedia or Kayak, but Kiwi is what I actually use.

“Using its powerful algorithms and proprietary data, Kiwi.com is able to search for the cheapest route possible between cities on the dates that a traveller wants to leave and return. No longer will people be flicking through tabs for hours trying to find the perfect adventure.”

They explain it like this: “The traveling salesman must travel between a number of different cities, but doesn’t care about the order in which he does so. He just wants to find the most efficient way to visit each one. If the salesman is visiting 10 different cities, there are 180,000 different combinations of journeys that must be checked to find the most efficient route.”

So, let’s try it!

I set my departure city as Merida, my departure date as the 14th of August and set it to return to Merida at the end of the trip on the 14th of September.

I’ve randomly selected the cities of:

1. Merida, MX
2. Columbus, Ohio
3. Nashville, TN
4. Las Vegas, Nevada
5. Orlando, FL
6. Any NYC airport
7. Austin, TX
8. Seattle, WA
9. Merida, MX

$885 USD for 9 cities, leaving from Merida, Mexico and returning to Merida, Mexico. You guys, that is insane. A round trip flight from Columbus to Vegas last time I went was nearly $600.

As you can see, it created the order for me in which I’d get the cheapest flight. I think this is pretty amazing for when you are going to like 5 cities in Europe on a backpacking trip or spending two weeks bouncing around Central America. I mean, even the route I just did, if you took away Merida, imagine someone coming to the USA as a tourist and being able to hit up all those places – the rate is $885 because it’s coming from Mexico into the USA and back out, but if you took off that flight it’s even less at $535. That’s wild!

Yes, it’s mostly budget airlines but for that price, this is definitely something I’m going to be testing out on future travels. I just booked Merida to Atlanta to Ohio and back to Merida and that was $500 because I wasn’t flexible on the order – so you can see how being flexible on your itinerary can make for some insane savings!

As you know, I left India for the last time as an expat last week and from here on out will be going back to India as a tourist. Ben and I took our pets and preparing to leave India with pets (think quarantine, paperwork, and government export offices) is about as stressful as you can imagine. Here’s an article on how to take pets out of India. If there is ANY time to upgrade a flight from economy to business class, traveling with pets is the time, ha! Plus the route we took included a 15-hour flight from Mumbai directly to Toronto, another great reason to upgrade.

In a future post, I’ll be sharing about how to take pets out of India, but now I want to tell you about the plane journey. This route from Air Canada is new. It’s only been around for about 8 months and does not fly every day; just three times a week. You will want to book well ahead. I will always choose a long direct flight like this out of India rather than stopping in Europe because for me, it’s the layovers that stress me out and make my trip seem so much longer. The majority of flights from the USA and Canada involve stopovers in Europe, so this new flight is golden. We looked up multiple options and it was cheaper than all the competing airlines. Ben and I booked this about 1 month before our trip. I was upgraded complimentary by the airline at the gate! I am a member of the Aeroplan (miles program) and suggest you sign up as well. I’m only just now starting to get into points.

This is not the first time I’ve chosen to go through Canada to go to India. Last year, I flew from Ohio to Toronto on a separate ticket just to go to India from Toronto. In the USA, the only direct flight available is usually United, who I actually try to avoid on long-haul flights due to some serious flight mishaps with them in the past. If you are coming from the USA to India, it’s well worth flying a code-share airline to Toronto and catching their direct flights either to Mumbai like my journey or Delhi which is also direct.

The B787 Dreamliner & Business Class Heaven

That moment when the airline flight attendant crosses out your seat and writes in “1A”… bliss. If you’ve ever boarded a plane in India then you know that lines are a mess – and Indians push in line to board as if we aren’t all going to be able to get on the plane. I’ve written about this dilemma before in my “This is India” series. Getting priority boarding for business class is enough of a perk to booking it, haha! You also get more luggage allowance.

I had just dropped Shanti, my dog, off with the staff and was feeling quite emotional (not just for the dog but leaving India after 5 years here). I immediately made my seat into a bed with the mattress cover, pillow, and duvet, and got settled in. I don’t waste any time getting comfortable!

The seats are a 1-2-1 configuration. I had a window seat, so didn’t have anyone sitting next to me. One thing I loved right away is that there was a little cubby you could put all your belongings in during take-off and landing.

When you get on board, they will come and offer you drinks, magazines, and newspapers. They also were kind to tell me that the pilot was a dog-lover and knew my dog was on board the plane. Below, you can see the amenities that are given to the business class passengers. The headphones were noise-canceling which was fantastic. They gave slippers, socks, earplugs, an eye mask, face and hand cream, and a toothbrush and toothpaste. It is a pretty standard kit compared to other business class airlines although I think the creams were a bit nicer than I have been given before.

The seats do fully recline back into a bed and the pillows and duvet are totally comfortable and full-size. They gave me an extra pillow when I asked. Business class was not full and it was very quiet up there but I still wore my earplugs when I slept.

Right after take-off, which was around 11 pm, dinner was served. I usually eat before a flight because I don’t like plane food but because I was traveling with Shanti I had not eaten. That ended up being okay because look at the dinner they served!

I ate dinner while watching First Wives Club. They had all the new releases, in fact, I was really impressed with how new of movies they had as options but I had seen them all. Luckily, they had a ton of older classics. The spinach and cheese-filled chicken breast, roll, cheese plate, and salad were all tasty. They also offer cheesecake or ice cream for dessert. You get Baskin Robbins in India but it’s usually a little melty and re-frozen making it not very tasty… unfortunately, this ice cream was like that and I didn’t enjoy it much. They have other snacks throughout the flight you can get as you like, so I also had a bag of Vicky’s chips and a Lindt dark chocolate bar.

While dinner was really tasty, for breakfast I chose the french toast and didn’t love it. The omelette looked a lot better so I recommend going for that instead. They give you some pastries anyway on the side, so you’ll get some good bread with the omelette meal.

This was an overnight flight so for the most part, it was quite dark and “bed time”. I woke up about an hour outside Toronto and read peacefully until we landed, feeling totally refreshed.

Maple Leaf Lounge Access

With a business class ticket, you get access to the Maple Leaf Lounge. When you de-plane, and are going from one international flight to another (just passing through Canada) you go to the “international to international” security line which is right there near the gate. There was no one in line and I scammed my USA passport to go onward to security. The lounge is right there on the other side of security.

If you are not from the USA, you might need to do an ETA, which is a quick form you fill out online and they will email you a confirmation. You will need to this to board the plane. Ben is from the UK and forgot to do this so did it at checkin and go the confirmation within 5 minutes. This isn’t recommended though as sometimes they want additional paperwork and the airline cannot let you board without the right immigration papers (no airline will).

I used the lounge to freshen up then hit up the breakfast bar. Thank you Canada for sausages and bacon! During a long trip, the below is basically heaven.

The lounge is just upstairs from all the onward international flights with Air Canada so you can stay there right up to the minute of boarding. There is not a lot of space for seating down at the gate, so I recommend staying in the lounge as long as you can. It has tons of seating, was not very full at all, had great food, booze if you want it, good WiFI, and loads of magazines and newspapers to read.

My Onward Flight: Toronto to Cancun

I was also bumped up for my ongoing flight to Cancun and the breakfast on that flight was SMASHING. I have never had red pepper relish before, but now I want it on everything I eat for the rest of my life, lol. The fruit was so fresh and it was just a really tasty meal. They gave out headphones and iPads with the same movies and TV shows as the long-haul flight from Mumbai. I watched Black Panther and Tribes of Palos Verdes. The flight was on-time and a breeze.

When I got to Cancun, all my luggage was there having been checked all the way through from India. Actually, you used to have to pick luggage up and re-check it in Toronto and you do have to in the USA with most airlines so it’s a huge benefit that they now to the international to international line, letting your luggage go all the way through.

Overall, I highly recommend this flight and if you have the budget to upgrade it’s well worth it. The older I get, the more I put into the quality of things rather than just booking the cheapest ticket I see. These are long flights to India and being in economy showing up jetlagged will start your trip off a bit tired – so especially if you are visiting India for just a couple of weeks, look into the business class prices, compare dates to see which dates have the lowest price and make your trip a breeze by going business class!

Even if you are not going to fly business class, consider flying out of Toronto with Air Canada to India direct rather than the US airlines that stop in Europe. Doing one flight without a layover makes things so much less stressful and it’s usually much cheaper than the other options out of the US.

Using Kiwi’s multicity tool when you are backpacking is literally a game-changer. If I had known about this before I backpacked India back in 2012, I would have totally done it. The most stressful part about traveling India is the transportation: long train rides, bumpy overnight buses, and searching for the right trains (which are often booked). So, the fact that you can travel most of the hotspots by flight for just $200 is the greatest present ever for a stressed out traveler!

Let me tell you how to use Kiwi’s multicity tool to travel India on the CHEAP, while in comfort!

1. When you first get on Kiwi’s website, you need to click “multicity” where you see “return” and “one-way”.

2. You need to set a starting point. I chose Delhi, as often international flights come into Delhi.

3. Choose the “To” as “Anywhere”

When the results pop up, you’ll want to choose the cheapest one to start – and you don’t want to backtrack, so you’ll want to think about a decent order you can go in. Jaipur is the cheapest at just $21, and Rajasthan (the state that Jaipur is in) is the best for tourists!

I’ll tell you, paying $21 for a flight sure as hell beats all the other alternatives. You’d pay around $10 for a train ticket anyway.

After you select that destination to Jaipur, click the blue button that says “add flight”. Then, it’ll automatically populate Jaipur to: and you should click again, “anywhere”.

You can continue doing this until you think you’ve covered the places you want to see. Just make sure you don’t go backward. Keep choosing to move onward, in this case, I did so in a counter-clockwise direction.

Once I was done this is what my flight path looked like:

Delhi > Jaipur > Udaipur > Mumbai > Goa > Bangalore > Hyderabad > Chennai

That’s 7 flights covering a huge chunk of India and most of these would be on your backpacking list, all for $200, well $199.73 to be exact. Kiwi is the lowest price flight search engine I’ve found yet. And no, this isn’t a sponsored post!

You can see all the flight options in this “box” above which has all 7 flights laid out. However, you can scroll down to more boxes where there are the same flights at different times and there were about 10 options with different times that were exactly the same price.

Just select the timings you like best, and click “book this flight” and you can book all 7 flights at once! It will look like this:

Your flight e-tickets will all be sent to your email and phone if you give them a phone number.

I always tell people when you backpack India, the biggest mistake people make is trying to see too much. That is because on a budget you travel by train and bus in India. But, that takes a lot of time and stress which is why I say don’t put too many destinations on your India bucket list.

In the case that you are flying, though, it’s so much less stress and saves so much time that you can add a lot on to your journey. It’s definitely something to think about, even if you do this just for part of your trip!

Why do I always book flights with Kiwi.com? Because they are cheaper. Hands down, in all my years of travel I have never found such good deals as I do with Kiwi. This isn’t a sponsored post from them – it’s just that I am really like them and want to pass these tips along for how to book cheap flights like I do!

Before I tell you how to book with Kiwi.com and use their cool booking tools, which help you find cheaper deals, I want to just share an example from my recent trip to Bali. I had to fly Goa to Bali and looked first at Kiwi.com, where I was sure I’d find the best deal. For the sake of this blog post I searched the same dates on Cleartrip, Cheapoair, Kayak, and Skyscanner to confirm and show you the proof.

I also used their “Kiwi Gauruntee” when a flight was cancelled, and it worked perfectly without any hassle.

How to Book Cheap Flights with Kiwi.com

In case you’re wondering if they really are cheaper, here’s a case study for Bali to Goa.

As you go to book your dates, it shows you a calendar with prices already populated. I’m nearly always flexible with my schedule and it’s one of the best ways to save money.

So, looking at the dates I set on the 22nd Feb and returning on the 12th of March (little more expensive but wanted that extra weekend). The price that came up with 29,645 Rs ($443 USD) which is a great price and I know I could have gotten it even cheaper on Kiwi another day.

Kiwi price: $443 USD

I took these dates and I searched them on other websites that I used to book with. The first is Cleartrip which was always known as the best in Asia (in particularly India).

Cleartrip Price: $677 USD

Kayak price: $656 USD

Cheapoair price: $687 USD

Lastly, I checked Skyscanner.

Skyscanner is usually really good and used to be the website that I used a lot to book. They actually forward you along to other booking sites, though. Funnily enough, it was a flight I searched on Skyscanner that forwarded me to Kiwi in the first place.

Skyscanner price: $724

So overall when it comes to booking this flight to Bali from Goa, Kiwi came up over $200 cheaper than all the other search engine booking sites I checked.

It’s pretty crazy in terms of a discount, so I’ll explain WHY it is Kiwi offers such cheap flights.

Basically, they search all the airlines whether it’s budget ones or popular huge airlines. They then combine them based on the cheapest route, NOT based on who has code shares together (which is what most airlines search).

When you read articles about how people “flight hack” by searching out smaller routes within their route to make the total route cheaper, in the end, THIS is that except Kiwi is doing that for you.

That means you won’t be checked all the way through sometimes but will have to re-check your luggage. Don’t worry though they offer a guarantee that if you miss a connection, they’ll put you on the next flight out for free (more about that later).

Unique search features Kiwi.com offers

Anywhere Function

So, the first one is the Anywhere function which isn’t the most unique since a number of flight search engines now offer this.

I searched from Columbus just out of curiosity (It’s my hometown USA airport). I was pretty shocked to see you can fly to Savannah or New Orleans for just $100 round trip.

Next, I wanted to show you how I would search an international flight like the one I do each year from Ohio to India.

When I fly this route it took so much searching in the past because I had to search Cleveland to Mumbai, Cleveland to Delhi, Columbus to Mumbai, and Columbus to Delhi on multiple flight search engines. That took forever!

Now, I can just search Ohio to India or Columbus to India, etc. So, I did a practice search of Columbus to India.

Using the anywhere function, I did two more blog posts to show you:

Search by Region or Country

It shows me that Mumbai is going to be my cheapest port of entry into India. So, if I click on Mumbai, I can then see the routes and airlines it wants me to take which is United going there and Turkish coming back (I love Turkish Airlines).

It’s also a 23-hour journey one way and 25 going back which is really good for this route. I’ve done 40 before. I did searches on United and Turkish Airlines to see what it would cost to book directly through them,

I did searches on United and Turkish Airlines to see what it would cost to book directly through them, which came up just a tad higher. The thing is had you not known that United and Turkish were going to give you the best route you wouldn’t know to search their sites. 

Search Using Radius

You can draw a radius around the area you want to go if you are flexible. This is great if you want to backpack Europe and don’t care where you start or if you want to spend a week in Southeast Asia. You can draw a radius around your departure too if you are flying from say, Europe, to SE Asia and don’t mind the order you go in or know you can take a train to a cheaper airport.

I searched from Ohio (which a radius for all the airports) to Southeast Asia.

You can see that it’s pretty much the same rate if you fly to Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, but Hanoi Vietnam is about $100 more.

Search with Anytime & Date Range

Not only can you search anywhere to see the best results, but with kiwi.com you can search anytime.

Let’s say I wanted to go to Sri Lanka from Goa this Spring but didn’t care when; only that it was the cheapest time. I would use the Anytime tool. But to make it even cooler, I can then use the “time of stay” to select that I want to be there anywhere from 6-10 days depending on the cheapest flights.

You can also put in date ranges like “I’d like to go to Sri Lanka some time between March 5-10 and stay there for 6 days”, which can really help you simplify your search.

I tried that using New York as a city to fly Anywhere, Anytime. Turns out you NYC folks can go to Myrtle Beach round trip for $83. That’s probably less than you would spend a night out on the town, so escape the winter and fly down for the weekend!

When people talk about how expensive it is to travel, they’re right in many ways but often they don’t know about these amazing tools to use to help you fly cheaper.

Using the tools I’ve outlined above will help you book cheap flights through Kiwi every time. I hope (fingers crossed) that they don’t change and their rates stay the same.

The Kiwi.com Guarantee

Remember how I mentioned that one of the ways they find cheap flights are searching the exact cheapest flight for each leg of the journey, regardless of if those airlines are in a code share (aka when airlines partner up to fly places onward that they don’t fly themselves).

When you fly in a code share they usually check your luggage all the way through for you and give you your boarding passes for the whole journey.

When you book with Kiwi, they are not always code-share so you’ll see between each leg if you need to get your bags. They say it clearly on the ticket if you do need to pick up your luggage and recheck it in.

“Recheck your checked baggage – Please note that you will need to collect and recheck your baggage between all flights. This is because you will be travelling with different airlines or on different routes with the same airline.”

So, that might make you worry that you won’t have enough time to do so. When you are code share and you miss a flight because the previous flight was delayed, they will put you on the next flight out.

Kiwi offers the same promise. With their Kiwi Guarantee, they promise that if you miss a flight because there was not enough connection time due to a delay, cancellation, or rescheduling and there wasn’t enough time, they will book you on the earliest flight out for FREE. If that means you have to stay overnight at an airport, they will pay for it under 50 Euros. They’ll also give you $10 to eat if your flight is delayed more than 4 hours.

That means, if you “travel hack” to find these deals alone, this is no company helping you with a guarantee. if you miss a flight, that’s on YOU and you alone – and you’ll have to book another. Let Kiwi find them for you.

If it’s a delay before you take off, you are meant to get ahold of them and let them know so you can sort something out. But, sometimes there isn’t time to call.

“In exceptional cases when your flight(s) is cancelled or you miss the flight connection(s) due to a flight delay and you are unable to contact us in this matter, you may purchase the ticket(s) for the alternative transportation without prior agreement between you and us and we will refund you the price of such ticket(s) for alternative transportation up to twice the original price of the unused flight(s) en route to your destination.”

You MUST keep the paperwork for this and paperwork that the other flight was delayed or canceled and you had to do this.

My Air India flight from Chennai to Singapore was canceled and I missed my connection to Bali, so I called Kiwi from the airport to see what to do.

I was nervous that there would be a catch, but when I called from Chennai saying they haven’t told us when they were rescheduling, they offered to put us on a Singapore Air flight the next am from Chennai out then also reschedule the flight we missed in Singapore to Bali.

Technically, Air India had to get us to Singapore, so it was over and beyond that they offered to get us on another airline.

In the end, our flight was rescheduled on Air India for 3 am, so we stayed with Air India and they put us on a later flight out of Singapore to Bali.

The rules are that they will put you on any flight that isn’t more than double the cost of the one you already booked, for free. If it is over double, you pay the difference. We got a flight with our same airline, just later in the day.

Why it was so easy to use their gauruntee:

• They answered their phones off hours with no waiting
• They took our Indian numbers and called us back so we didn’t use all our data
• They emailed within 30 minutes to tell us our options when our phones were out of signal and they couldn’t reach us.
• When Air India kept changing things and it was chaos at Chennai airport, Kiwi was patient and helpful with us.
• They weren’t trying to get out of it, they didn’t even ask for proof of the cancellation or paperwork from us although you should have this just in case they do.

The Downsides of Kiwi.com

So now that I’ve raved about them, what sucks about them? I’ll tell you the two things I wish I could change about Kiwi.com.

Luggage concerns

When you check out, it will say what luggage is allowed. This day and age, check in luggage is hardly ever allowed. When you want to add luggage, you add it just as a set price. They’ll say do you want to add a 15 kg bag (or more) and you just can select it. It will be one price and you don’t see a breakdown of what airlines that is for. If you are fllying multiple legs or multiple airlines you can’t see the real prices. I checked for my flight to Bali and it worked out okay (as some airlines let you have 15 kg free, but other legs charged about $4 per kg) and Kiwi.com luggage was a fair price.

But, when I flew back from Morocco to London with Ryanair I wanted to add luggage. You cannot add it on Ryanair (you must do EVERYTHING through Kiwi) and it was indeed cheaper on Ryanair than Kiwi.

I actually emailed their customer service to ask why and they explained that it’s just too complicated to break down each airline cost as they are always changing and they have every carrier in their system and combine so many airlines into a journey. So with some bookings you might lose $20 and with others you might save. But, it does end up being cheaper this way then waiting until you’re at the counter to purchase at the airport.

Booking roundtrips as a set

When I book a round trip, I wish I could look at the outgoing flight and choose my favorite one, then look at the return flight and choose it to make my own set.

Kiwi, like nearly every other search engine, makes the set for you.

There is good news, though, as this is just an inconvenience. If you were to book a round trip on United instead of two single journeys separately, you’ll always get a better deal on a round trip. Because Kiwi searches the cheapest routes for each leg, it doesn’t matter if you book round trip and the price will be the same if you go ahead and search the outgoing and return flight separately and book separately if you don’t like the set that shows up.

It’s just not as easy and I wish I could make up my own sets! I am getting too picky, now, though.
