Located on the bank of the Kaveri River, you find the Shivanasamudra waterfall, the first hydro-electric power station in Asia (1902). They had so much extra energy here that they decided to light up all of Mysore- this was before NYC had lights!
This area holds ancient temples and they believe that a long time ago a village was here. July through October the falls are in full force, but these photos are from when I was there in mid-October.
Getting there: The twin falls are called Gaganachukki and is 70 km from Mysore or 140 from Bangalore.
This is one of my 8 favorite day trips from Mysore.
Shivanasamudra Waterfalls
These falls were just amazing! They were massive, definitely not ones to swim in. There have been fatal accidents reported from people who ignore the signs.
We took a boat ride at 100 rs per person (a high charge because I’m not Indian) which took us right up to the falls and we got sprayed by the water. I had to ask them not to spin which is sort of the main attraction because I knew I’d vomit everywhere and they seemed genuinely disappointed. I don’t know how these drivers spin around all day, day after day, and don’t get a brain injury!
TIP: If you visit here with goMowgli, they plan for everyone to bring a packed lunch which they’ll help you provide. I love the food from Elements but suggest you bring extra snacks like chips or cookies with you in because there aren’t shops around.
Also, I just really feel like sharing this photo of some boys we passed on the way:
Short and sweet, but highly recommended that you take time to see these falls. I actually enjoyed visiting here more than I did the famous Jog Falls. Less touristy and more adventurous this spot is often overlooked by those on vacation.

I have never before seen a round coracle. ( I had to look it up) Incredible.
It is amazing how a single rower can maneuver a round, woven reed-bamboo craft with just a single paddle.
I wish goMowgli had been available back when I was visiting the Mysore area. I totally missed seeing any Indian waterfalls at all. Envious.
Very interesting place, and I love those Coracles, they are fun to ride.
I hope one day we will stop charging extra from tourists.
These Falls really look too beautiful! I mean I am surprised the kind of gems we have here in India! I think you have seen more of India than me. ;-)
Hahah India does have a lot to offer!
That is so cool, that historic bit! I love historic trivia. That’s interesting to think, that they had this even before New York had lights. Really puts things in perspective, when you think of the general opinion of how progressive “first world countries” have always been, especially the West.
And spinning boat rides? Oh yes please! ;)
Still a good place to visit this time of year? In about 2 weeks to be more specific !
I just discovered your blog and think its a great tool thank you ! :)
Yes, I think these ones will be about the same this time of year as when I was there in October.
Omg these look gorgeous! I love your blog-it’s constantly making me add on plans to my (eventual) trip to India.
Thanks. it’s totally worth a visit here.
