Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- I’m back in Ohio. Vegas was a seriously a whirlwind. I’m so tired lol. It was so good catching up with friends. I don’t think Vegas is really my scene anymore but I did love the food and the DJ’s were really good. I’ll be writing about it soon.
- Finally I’m staying in one place for second and that is Ohio. I”ll be here for 3 weeks then Ben gets here. My mom and I are already getting him a basket full of his favorite foods since we’re going to celebrate his 30th when he’s here. I can say that and not ruin the surprise because Ben never reads this lol! Okay, but then watch my luck and he’ll read it this time haha I”ll guess it’ll be a test ;)
Now your story,
I am sharing today about my Birthday which was June 9 and celebrated in Goa!
So, I actually got two cakes and sang to twice which is pretty fun. The reason is because we did a birthday celebration in the afternoon with our friends that also work for us (I’m really not sure how to type that, but they are our friends who also happen to work for us so yeah!)
We learned that in India when it’s your Birthday or you get a car or have a baby, you go around and take people sweets. On our housekeepers birthday, she brings cake and Coke to the house.
So, Ben got a cake and some Coke and chips and Leena and the other villa’s housekeepers & groundskeepers, and Babu our driver and friend and his daughter Ahsmi, and the security guards, and Ryance Ben’s our buddy and the nicest guy for always watching our dogs, came over for CAKE! And by came over, I mean came inside because they are all already at the house every day.
Ben’s card which has very Indian phrases… “many happy returns of the day!” which is what my Indian readers wrote on my Facebook page on my birthday.
Shanti and Omni were not invited to the party because Shanti is mean to children (I know that’s really bad!) and Omni is just too dumb to be around so many people and stay calm.
Then we went to lunch at Chicken Man!
I got this top from Tia and the bag is from Goa designer La Vie Boheme (my friend Lea’s mom).
Chicken Man was super tasty. It was my first time trying it. It’s open in Monsoon and not man places are so we were quite limited on choice for a birthday meal :) It was delicious though!
Ben got Saffron, Tia, and I pedicures at Snips. And he got his hair cut (which he hates).
Saffron made me this illustration of Huckleberry Finn who was my first dog here in Goa and although fully vaccinated, he died from rabies. I can never stop missing him and loved that she drew him with wildflowers!
Later that night, we went to Riverhouse for drinks and dinner and I actually wore HEELS for the fourth time this year.
I’m 72 (or 27). Ben got the MOST amazing cake from Mona who is our favorite caterer. It was a mint chocolate chip ice cream cake with vanilla cake layers. MMM!
Rishab & Marilyn got me this drink that was bigger than my head.
It was the best Birthday (Thanks BEN!) and thank you guys who wished me Happy Birthday too!

I am so glad you are enjoying India so much :) Happy birthday !!
Happy Belated Birthday Rachel!
It looks like you had so much fun. Hiurrah for being 27 rather than 72 lol!
hahaha yes exactly!
Happy Birthday !!! Surprised to see no one smeared cake all over your face … :P
haha I am too much of a neat freak for that!
Happy (belated) birthday Rachel. It looks like it was a great day. In Indonesia it’s common to bring food or order pizza for everyone else on your birthday. Who knew that was a thing in India too ;)
Thank you Justine! Hope you’ve been doing well! :D
Happy birthday!!! Looks like you had an awesome time!!
And as for “Omni is just too dumb to be around so many people and stay calm.” – is it unfortunate that I could use this to describe some people (not animals) in my life? :p
muhahaha ;) good one!
Belated Happy B’day, Rachel!!! Look forward to celebrate it again if you travel to New Delhi anytime soon!
Thank you!
Bleted Happy Birthday to you God Bless Respectfully
