Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- BEN IS IN OHIO! Okay, Ben was in Ohio.. now we are all in Nashville. Family vacation time! Tweet me any tips you have for Nashville :) We are pretty much just winging it!
Now your story,
This is a story that comes to mind about my friend Azad, who is a really good friend of Ben and I. He’s from Kerala and he’s hilarious. He worked for Ben for a few years on and off but even when he’s not, he comes to stay with us in Goa and hang out.
His English is really good and a lot of the lingo he picked up is from talking with some Kiwi divers that work with Ben. He’ll say to me “broooo hows it?” and I”ll say “Az broooo good how are you!?”
One day in Kochi, Ben sent Az to Subway to get some turkey subs for all the dudes at work.
Az called Ben…
“Bro… no turkey bro…”
Ben: Ok.. just get the salami then
“ok bro!”
…“Bro…. no salami bro!
Ben asks for another meat.
Ben bro… chicken only. Or aloo”
Ben: They ONLY have chicken? That can’t be right… let me talk to the guy.
Employee takes phone. “McDonalds.. what do you want?”
Ben gets Az back on the phone… Bro you’re at McDonalds, not Subway!!”
Clicky clack, go Az’s flip flops running out of McDonlads…Oh nooo Brooo hahaha Okay I go to Subway!”
Hilarious, but maybe you have to hear it in person not read it but I”m laughing to myself now remembering this. I could tell 100 stories about Azad – he’s like our brother! Oh like the time Ben’s brother taught him the Thriller dance.
Now Azad is in Saudi doing some work. Lots of Keralans go to work in Saudi – difficult work too!
If you’re reading this Az bro, miss you!

It’s funny how people pick up mannerisms and slang isn’t it! haha
Do you happen to have any advice on a good area to hole up in to get some work done around Goa in late August/early September? We have been looking at house sitting or air bnb’s but not sure of the areas at that time of year! I thought of you straight away-Any help would be appreciated!
It’ll still be monsoon time, so North and South will both be quiet. You could choose either. If you want more restaurant options choose anjuna/vagator area. Morjim/Ashwem open even later. Arambol maybe last to open up for season.
Hi Rachel
Enjoying your blog immensely. Would you consider being our guide in possibly 6 months or so. My husband and I do not have a definite date in mind. If not, I am certain you have a friend as we haven’t been to India, live in Canada, and want to visit your favorite cities. Length of stay isn’t a factor as we are a happily retired couple living on Vancouver Island (West Coast).
Hi Beverly. It’s so great you want to come to India! I don’t do tours/guiding but can help direct you to someone who does. Just shoot me an email rachel@hippie-inheels.com Thanks!
Hahahaha this is great. My flatmates here in Lahore have picked up some of my lingo, and it shocks me sometimes how observant they are (and how much Australian slang cr*p comes out of my mouth)!!
hahaha it’s like a mirror of how you talk haha! hilarious
