Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- At the time you are reading this I’m somewhere between the US and India… it’s a long 40 hour journey and it blows! womp, womp.
- I’ll probably be MIA the few days I get back to India, catching up with friends, playing with my dogs, and cleaning my house!
Now your story,
So, I didn’t have a story to tell today and I messaged Ben and said I haven’t been in India for over a month, I need a good story to tell. He’s like well, I’m sitting at our favorite restaurant and there’s this bag of water with coins in it above my head, that’s definitely an Indian thing.
They were hanging at every corner. A local explained they keep away bugs. Who woulda thought!? I have no idea why.
I googled it and there’s actually a lot of results. Acoording to this article people do it even in Florida and Texas. It has something to do with flies seeing the water as a much larger body of water and wanting to avoid it.
I actually learned something similar about flies and zebras- the black and white zebra stripes are so bold against each other and multiply in flies eyes (as flies see things as a mosaic, or something like that) so it keeps them away because it’s crazy to look at. This is why flies won’t land on a zebra.
The article also says it could be the light reflecting off the bags. This one says the coins magnify in the flies’ eyes.
This is India!

We do this in Mexico too! No coins though…
So odd! :)
Haha!
Rachel, I am from Texas, in the country people do hang bags of water. I have never seen coins in them though. Supposedly it confuses the flies when they look through it. That’s what I was told anyway. So funny!
Have a safe trip home!
How random! I bet I’ll see it now everywhere – it always works that way once you learn something new you start to see and hear about it all the time and wonder “wow how did I never know about this before, it’s everywhere!?”
Omg I had seen them before, but never thought to ask what they are. How interesting!!
I’m sure I’ll see them everywhere now! haha too weird
How funny! I’ve never heard of this, but I recently heard of people in Central Asia hanging bags of old bread up.
Nobody knows why!
All I could think of was. Ugh. food hanging around! Rats!!
Hi Rachel!!!
