Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- I did such a cute interview Books Love Me: Rachel’s Literary Love Affair for A Place like Me in a Girl like This about all my favorite books. I mentioned the series that made me curious about travel but can’t think of the name! Do you know? It was books about brother and sister who go in a treehouse and read about dinosaurs or the moon, or the pyramids, and then are transported there!
- Hippie in Heels was on the list for Best Female Travel Blogs 2015 by Travel Junkette!! Very exciting news!
Now your story,
At the sake of people thinking I’m boring, as one reader did when I posted the sand buckets at the petrol pump, I have something to share about India that I find interesting… and you may not at all! I hadn’t thought much of it until my friend came to visit and was just getting such a kick out of it.
When in my friend Nami’s rental car, we backed up to reverse into the street and Jingle Bells started playing. Britani, my friend visiting, was DYING laughing. She couldn’t believe it was real.
But, cars in India do play music outside the car so other people know they are reversing. I hear it constantly when my neighbors back out.
Even my water filter plays Jingle Bells. What is it with Jingle Bells!? And does this happen in other countries or is it just an India thing?
Here’s a video I found on YouTube of a car reversing with music:
This is India!

Someone actually told you they thought you were boring?! How. rude. And kind of hilarious at the same time :P
hahah yes :) and offered me some writing tips as well ;)
i was the person who commented boring ‘sand buckets in petrol pump’,i feel so ashamed now of writing that.pls forgive me i heart u
Haha! This is hilarious to me. I can’t say there is anything quite as crazy going on in Jakarta. But I do have a phone/landline that comes with my apartment (and apperently comes in all apartments in my building) and the ring tone is “It’s a small world after all.” So obnoxious!!
hahaah omgsh I’ve heard that one too on the cars backing up!
That is really funny, but it must be annoying if you hear it constantly! I love India’s random little quirks.
Congratulations Rachel! I am so happy you are noted as one of the “BEST” in the world! I love Hippie in Heels, your smile and your humor.
I had lived in India over 40 years ago when I was your age and your blog certainly helped me ease around a much changed, modern India when I traveled back recently to several central Indian states.
Please keep the adventures coming for as long as possible!
wow that’s great to hear, thank you so much! I wonder what India will be like if I come back 40 years from now.. hard to imagine!
I’ve been travelling South America and in a number of countries I’ve noticed this too, where every car plays J-Lo when it reverses. Makes a change from the usual beep!
lol, that’s so freaking funny! I love it.
Hahahaha. That is so random! And why Jingle Bells?!
Reminds me of the ice cream trucks in Los Angeles, they’d always play dirty songs like “I’ll take you to the candy shop…” and “Lolipop” by Lil’ Wayne.
Lol, they DO!?! wtf! lol
Congratulations on being on the list! And whoever called you boring is obviously mistaken!
thanks ;)
OMG I remember this!!! And I hadn’t even thought about it either!! How funny!!
And I can’t believe someone told you you’re boring – in my opinion you’re anything but!
lol thanks, I appreciate it :)
Ya that’s pretty common in India.
I have seen many cars with that typical Alarm clock music. It’s funny
Sorry I’m late to this – I recently found your blog as I’m moving to Goa in about a week. But I think the books you are thinking of are Magic Treehouse! I LOVED them as a kid, they were my favorite book series! haha I got super excited when I read that and just had to comment.
AHHHHH!!! you’re right that’s what they were! thanks you!! x
