Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- Ben and I are so stoked his brother Josh is here! It’s been a long time coming. We’re in Ratnagiri until tonight then back to Goa.
- Mariellen from BreathDreamGo put together a piece where 30 travelers say why they love India travel and I was happy to collaborate on that.
- Also, I saw the traffic on Hippie in Heels rise since last week because of the House Hunters show, so I want to say again- if you’ve just found my blog: WELCOME!
Now your story,
In Goa, when people have Pedigree dogs they don’t let them out without a leash for a variety of reasons. One I found out recently, is that people often steal them. Pedigrees are worth quite a bit of money in India and are surely overbred. Dogs are easily stolen too because the robber just tells the dog to come get on their scooter and the dog happily sits down at their feet and is driven off.
Huckleberry Finn our late dog was a pedigree and I’m sure everyone wanted to take him because he was the CUTEST dog in the world. Our new dog Shanti, isn’t a pedigree, although I think she looks like a german shepherd, but she’s so stinkin’ cute I’m sure someone would love to take her too.
Like lots of countries in Asia, entire families ride on scooters. In Goa, you see even foreigners with their whole family on their scooties. So why not put their dog on too?! So they do!
You see dogs on scooters all the time. It’s so funny, but even as puppies people in Goa teach their dogs to sit on the scooter patiently and stay still. Many don’t have cars, so this is the only way to take the dog to the vet or to play at the beach.
That’s little Shanti and Ben ready for a ride along the path near our house. She likes to jump off when she sees interesting people, so we don’t take her often. We are “dog people” and LOVE dogs, but training them isn’t our strongest suit.
This is India!

Hi Rachel,
The other day here in Bali I saw a dude with 2 dogs on his motorbike.
1 stood on the back seat, 1 in front.
I had heart failure watching it; they were big dogs!
What a cutey your dog is.
Ryan
haha its always more funner when the dogs are huge!
Nothing makes me smile bigger than seeing puppies on scooters! It is quite possibly the cutest thing EVER. Your little pup is so adorable. I say that you should take a video of Shanti on a scooter because, well, that would be awesome!
good idea! I think i’ll try that. I’ll put it on IG @hippieinheelsblog next time we take her for a ride
Oh my gosh, a dog on a scooter! Just about the cutest thing I’ll see today, I’m sure! Shanti looks adorable, I can’t imagine life without dogs. The idea that they might get stolen is heartbreaking, it’s been happening quite a lot back here in UK recently: horrible.
haha it’s a pretty hard pic to beat :)
I was so shocked when I saw a family of five on a motorbike for the first time in India, but then quickly realized how common it is. Your dog is sooo cute!
Yes it’s hard to get used to! and thanks shanti is cuter than she is clever! haha
Its so funny how casual it is for families in some countries to bring babies and animals on scooters with them. My dogs would definitely jump off the scooter as well–I’m not sure they could handle it!
Yes, it is something I don’t think much of now but when friends visit and are in shock, it reminds me it isn’t normal.
A dog on a scooter? That’s the cutest thing I’ve seen in a while! :)
it is pretty darn cute
super cute pooch!
thanks!
I’m a dog person too, but thankfully I’ve never had to worry about mine getting stolen :/
He is soon cute! My Bronte would never have coped on a scooter though!!
haha, most dogs wouldn’t!
Sucks that you have to worry about dogs getting stolen. A dog on a scooter that’s pretty impressive. Guess you got to do what you got to do.
Yes, it’s an odd worry to have to have.
