Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- woop woop, I’m in Maui! How amazing is it that I found a return trip ticket Goa to Maui and back (through LA) for only 1300 USD. Ben had to go for work, so I’m tagging along and renting a car to go wander around. It’s a pretty expensive place… but HAWAII, so who cares! haha kidding sort of. I’ll love your tips for Maui and Honolulu… I’m here for two weeks.
Now your story,
The people who makes road signs in India have the best job in the world. I have seen some really interesting ones, but don’t always think to write them down.
On a recent road trip that was 4 hours long on the dangerous Goa-Mumbai road, I wrote down some. The road has some areas that are very windy, scary, and I have seen some horrible crashes, one which was fatal. You often see trucks over on their side. We always drive slow, and I can see why there are so many safety signs. I couldn’t take photos, as the road is too dangerous to stop. You don’t usually see sings like this, although in Goa I wish wearing a helmet was more enforced. I think it’s great that in Maharashtra they take the effort to make catchy phrases and make signs to encourage helmets and slow driving.
Highway Signs in India
Control you nerves on curves.
Don’t go to hell, mate. Wear a helmet.
Better to be Mr. Late than a late Mr.
Safety on the road is safe tea at home
Line between life and death is very thin.
This is a highway not a die-way.
This is India!

Creativity at work :P
These are hilarious! And necessary, I’m sure. I wish we had some more signs here on Roatan. The roads are a death trap.
they actually have direct flights from goa to maui? awesome; what airlines?
we are also going to maui in a month; let us know if you discover anything interesting;
I found this link pretty interesting; kayaking and snorkeling:
also zip-lines are big over there now, though expensive;
no not direct! 4 flights attached. but all through united airways.
I love “this is a highway, not a die-way” ha! Hopefully these signs are helping to make the roads a bit more safe!
Hahahaha love it!
I remember seeing some of these! So funny! They like their puns.
I mentioned it on instagram, but while your on Maui make sure you get lunch at Market Fresh Bistro in Makawao. Great homemade iced tea and coffee, amazing sandwiches and eggs benedict with local fish, and bright cheery atmosphere. It’s all local ingredients and really really good.
Also, there’s a pie shop south of Lahaina on the main highway called Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop. Oh my god, so good.
For things to do, you’ll love the road to Hana. It’s a gorgeous drive and lots of cool things to stop at. I love snorkeling on Maui and if you rent a mask and flippers you can plop in just about anywhere. Kaanapali Beach has surprisingly good snorkeling and super easy access. Kihei has some great spots too. Ahh have fun! I’m going back in December and can’t wait!
thanks again for all your tips! makawao was so cute but didnt have time for lunch sadly , im going to mention in my articles that you recommended it!
Glad you got to see Makawao at least! Thanks for mentioning me! That’s super nice of you! Sounds like you had a great time on Maui. I loved following along in IG. Makes me want to go back!
Hahaha. Those are so cute and clever! Catchier than a speed limit sign, too!
We don’t have as many creative ones here but one that always struck me was a little cafe on the side of the highway has a sign that says, “Please don’t die. We want to see you again.” and is followed with “Drive safe!” a few meters later. SO awkward.
LOL that is awkward, what the heck
It’s a little ways off for me (maybe next year or two years) but every post you write makes me want to visit India even more. Love reading your stories :)
Hi Rachel,
I saw you last night on an episode of House Hunters (my favorite show…no kidding!), and was super excited to see that they actually went to India! (India is my favorite country, as I became mesmerized by it at 17, and my husband finally fulfilled my lifelong dream to travel there last year! (Our journey leaned more toward staying at Ramana Maharshi’s ashram in Tiru). When you mentioned your candles (which are beautiful, by the way) and travel blog, I felt like I had to find you! I really love what you’re doing…you are fearless! I’ve always believed in a life with no regrets, and that’s you! (And by the way, my husband proposed to me and I picked up and moved in with him after ONE date…here we are, 22 years later and still happy in love!) Am enjoying your blog and re-living India all over again!
thanks so much for getting in touch! That’s so great you got to come see india :) you sound a lot like me LOL a little bit crazy ;) hopefully i’ll stay as lucky as you’ve been
Yes, definitely a lot alike! (a little bit crazy! It’s all good…usually!!!) And as far as being lucky like me, of that I have no doubt!!!
