Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.

What I was up to other than here:

  • Hawaii has been a whirlwind, but I’m still here tentatively until the 19th… although there are talks to extend that.. Hawaii is probably my favorite place on earth so far, no joke and as I write this I am making cunning plans to stay here longer.
  • Surprisingly, I actually AM doing some work and wrote this mini guide to Singapore for Bindi & Jeans a website I freelance for.

Now your story,

Today we’ll talk about the traffic police in India! woo hoo.

My mom and dad were visiting and we were taking them to the airport; their trip in Goa had come to an end. It was a blast! I loved seeing their shock to some of the crazy things in India, but also was excited when they actually liked it.

Of course the driving made them gasp, sometimes laugh, and sometimes shake their heads thinking “those idiots” during ridiculous traffic jams, as we all really do.

We were headed toward Panjim bridge, and those familiar with Goa know that there are two options: one straight into Panjim, and one just on the other side. We needed to take the left one in order to go to airport the fastest way. There was traffic as it was New Year’s Eve.

As we got to the roundabout where you have to decide to go right or left, a police officer came to stop our car telling the driver “it’s blocked, too much traffic, you must go right”. Traffic wasn’t blocked, and my driver wanted to go left. He slowed down, said “no…” and did exactly what he wanted to do: go left.

We watched as the cop tried to tell every car behind us the same thing, and after they all ignored him, he walked back to the side of the road defeated. It just cracked us up!

This is India!
