Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- Ben and I are in Tonbridge/ Tunbridge Wells/ London this week. We’ve been keeping busy going to Hastings and Rye with his family which were such cute towns. I tried a real fish n chips as well. His little brother has been spoiled with bowling, 2 arcades, bumper cars and more! It’s been fun but is going by too fast. Sunday we go to Vienna. Oh and of course we’ve been eating a LOT. Ben’s friends are saying they’ve never felt so unhealthy.
- My dog in Ohio, Brandi, passed away. She was 12 and had cancer. So, obviously that’s really sad. Send my parents happy thoughts to cheer them up!
- Nothing new in the blogging world. You might have noticed my site was down. Had some server (geek) issues but it should be all good now!
Now your story,
Ben noticed this in the ATM by Bobby Bar:
We thought it was pretty funny and unique to India. People here can be very superstitious & having lucky numbers is important, even incentive to open an “elite account”.
I’ve told you before about some superstitions like hanging a dummy outside their houses to ward off bad spirits, chili on their car bumpers, or not building a second floor.
Here is an article that tells 13 superstitions that Indians follow. One of them is that 13 is very unlucky. You will notice in India that the row 13 sometimes misses on Indian airlines and there is no 13th floor listed on the elevators. Another one you’ll notice is the “luck” on babies made with kajal that looks like a birth mark or dirt.
This is India!

I’m so, so sorry to hear about your pup :( So, the whole superstition thing reminds me of living in Indonesia. I always wondered why my apartment building and the malls didn’t have a fourth floor. Turns out that the Chinese word for “four” sounds a lot like the word “death.” So in a lot of Southeast Asian countries the number is pretty taboo. But I suppose we Americans are equally as superstitious about the number 13 ;)
Ahh I’ve heard that about China actually – really interesting!
Superstition follows Foolishness.
I offer my sincerest condolences to the entire Jones family due to the loss of their beloved Brandi.
Thanks Christine :)
I appreciated the string of chilies and lemon that hung on a string at the entrance of our Main Bazar (crazy chaotic) Street, Pahar Ganj New Delhi hotel near the New Delhi Railway train station. It did a great job of keeping away evil spirits while we stayed multiple times in January and February because no diseases, no drunks, nor even a street cow poked their heads in to the lobby to beg for chapatis during our stay!
;) That’s amazing! Although, I do find it the cutest thing when cows beg for chapati. I didn’t realize until following WAGS (welfare for animals in goa) that sometimes the women throw hot oil on the cows to make them stop begging — it’s horrible! the cows have to get special burn treatment using tumeric powder. Makes me so sad.
I encountered the one about the knives under the bed when I was invited to an Indian couple’s house in Pushkar – accidentally sat on the knife over dinner (was under the pillow), initially I thought it was for intruders haha! Also there’s the superstition of people putting bad energy/curses into lemons and throwing them onto the street.
I was recently in India (I’m from Australia) for nearly two months and have been blogging about my experiences travelling as a blonde Indian. Would love for you to check out my blog if you have time: http://www.tanisha.co xx
PS my condolences to you and your fam, I’m sure your furry pal loved spending her time on earth with you
Cool, i’ll check out your blog thanks!
Jinns will punish those evil women. Everyone knows you make an extra chapatti for a homeless cow. Bad Karma!
I see Ayurveda healing uses turmeric extensively and it has been proven to expedite burn recovery. I saw this and thought it was interesting: (Turmeric) “This could benefit burns treatment. In fact, the popular band-aid maker Johnson and Johnson has a specially made band-aid with turmeric paste that targets the Indian market.”
Who knew? I should have stocked up while I was in India

I remember when I was in India a good friend of mine was telling me about the superstitions, he said a lot of them starting as ways to control children from doing things they shouldn’t like cutting your fingernails inside. Very interesting
that is a good idea to teach kids!
