Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.

What I was up to other than here:

  • I’m in Bangkok this week for TBEX, a travel blogging conference. I always am surprised how modern and clean Bangkok is.

Now your story,

This is just a little story that happened to my friend.

She was shifting to a new apartment and found the perfect place which was meant to be ready in a months time. It really was and the landlord seemed super legit.

They agreed there would be A/C, refrigerator and a washing machine. He even went with her to Mapusa to decide which ones to get since she’s taking it long term. This is pretty unique and showed that he really cared.

On move in day, she was moving it all in having already left her old place and not being able to stay there, and part way through realized the electricity wasn’t working.

She wouldn’t have known ahead of time because 1. there weren’t any electronics in it as it was empty and 2. you’d just assume it would be connected

The landlord explained they didn’t have the permission yet for the building from the local government (or panchayat, or whatever the permission people are called).

She went a week without it, which isn’t actually a huge deal here in Goa since we are used to outages all the time. It’s now working… but to me is a funny example of how things happen in Goa and how that wouldn’t happen back home! I mean, no one even bothered to mention it wasn’t yet working!
