Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- I’ve been writing some freelance stuff and basically doing nothing important enough to chat about, to be honest. The cat has worms which is lovely. Our new dog omni went in to get “fixed” so he’s now sulking around. Knock on wood, shanti is doing fine! haha Ben has some crazy work project that he hasn’t torn himself away from his computer for 4 days now! So, this weekend he’ll be done and we can go have fun! Hope you all have a good weekend too!
Now your story (which is a photo today),
One of the things I LOVE about India is that the drivers put Gods on the dashboard of their cars. Not just taxis, but people’s personal cars. Everyone has their own preference but most often you’ll see Ganesh or Hanuman.
Ganesh is actually there for protection! So, that’s why you see it often. Indian’s decorate their cars a lot, when they are new, for a wedding, and the backs usually have a nice bumper sticker, and the mirrors have something dangling like a cow (in my drivers case).
Next week, I’m going to share about Desshara (Dasara) which is another time they decorate.
So, in Goa because it was once a Portuguese area, there are a lot of Christians (Catholic). That means often you’ll see Mary or Jesus on their dashboards.
But the best is when you see Mary in a Sari decorated like a God or this car pictured, where he’s covering a couple religious bases!
This is India!

I loved the gods and other decorations in Indian taxis! So cool.
me too!
We have Ganesh on the dashboards. Infact, we received it from the company from which we bought the car. :)
I love that!
Somehow I always forget that Goa was a former Portuguese colony. It would be so funny to see little Catholic figurines in saris! That’s awesome :)
haha :)
The best part about your posts is that there’s always an element of humor in them. The car picture is so cute! I am excited about your Dusshera post! I am sure it’s going to be equally entertaining.
I have three Ganesha’s on my dashboard here in the States. One I got on my first trip to India, one I got at an Indian grocery story in Dallas, and the other I got in the little India area of Houston. You can never have to many Ganesha’s. :) But that Mary is awesome too!
lol that is true!
Yes, its true. We do believe in placing our Gods in our cars. Many long distance trucks, if you have been in on one’ have a special section in their cabin just to place photos of Gods. I have a SpiderMan (got as gift from someone) dangling from my rear view mirror and a miniature statue of Ganesha on the dashboard. Both are symbolic of protection :-)
I like the photo you got with both Ganesha and Mother Mary. It actually depicts the ethos of India and Indians.
Thanks !
