Welcome back to This is India! I always have funny/weird stories about India to share with friends or family when I talk to them. This is just meant to be an honest portrayal about my life in India through short anecdotes. I also share here what I’ve been up to online outside Hippie in Heels.
What I was up to other than here:
- We’re in Sri Lanka yo! Celebrating Ben’s birthday, surfing, and chilling at the beach! I’ll update more next week. Did you see my post about my 2016 plans? What are YOUR plans?
- By the way I am now reading: [easyazon_link identifier=”0718156056″ locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]A Tiny Bit Marvellous[/easyazon_link] by Dawn French. It was recommended by a friend and is good so far. Getting a Kindle is the best gift I’ve gotten in a while! I have been reading so much!
- I met an incredible Turkish blogger in Istanbul at the World Tourism Forum who has been living in Cambodia for two years at the Ayn Soup Kitchen, which she started, helping kids who desperately need it. If you are looking for a great cause to donate to, please check out this website. I can promise that this is a great cause and the money is going to be used correctly if you choose to donate. Thanks!
Now your story,
I don’t know how telling about this escaped my but my dad recently reminded me of it and we were dying laughing, so I thought I better share it on here!
Ben works in Ratnagiri on and off which is a beach town in Maharashtra. And by beach town I don’t mean like Goa… It’s got a GORGEOUS beach but it’s not a tourist spot other than going to see Ganpatipule (a huge Ganesh temple, where we found out you can ride camels and promptly had Josh, Ben’s brother take a really awkward beach ride that was hilarious).
On the way up to the temple, we saw a
jet skia plastic boat RESEMBLING a jet ski but jugaad in every way. There is a steering wheel in the front, but it’s just for show because as you can see the driver of the “jet ski” has a boat engine and is steering from behind… which wouldn’t be so funny if there wasn’t handles in the front for pretend steering!
We obviously pulled over the car so we could all take a turn, in the rain, at having a guy drive us around in a mini boat. It was kind of fun because you would forget you were holding a pretend handlebar and would turn your fake wheel left and he would be going right throwing your balance.
It gave us all a good laugh (me, Ben, Andrew, and Azad) but I think Az bro liked it the most. I have a video of him laughing his ass off! I wish I could remember exactly how much we paid for this adventure. I think it was $3 per person for a 3-4 minute ride. Ben took a long ride all the way out to the sea from this little “alley” or whatever you call these backwaters… but it was a slow awkward ride he didn’t really recommend lol.
This is India!

Rachel,
That is funny. You can always find the craziest stuff in India. I noticed you changed your Logo/Header it looks really nice!
I did read your other post about you travel plans, but I was at work and did not have time to respond. In April I am out of here, as in out of Texas. I am going to take a road trip to South Carolina to see my mom. On the way I am stopping in Louisiana to see an ex-boyfriend, then stopping in Alabama to see my two best friends (they are a married couple). Then mid-April I am re-locating to Udaipur, Rajathan. I fly into Mumbai, so I am spending some days there. I am hoping to go to Darjeeling and Sikkim and I will for sure go to Nepal. Hopefully I will do a little traveling round Rajasthan. And I will happily do any other traveling that comes up! You schedule looks like fun. I totally wish I could go to Sri Lanka!
Thanks about the header! Anna, a girl who came on the goMowgli Kerala trip with me ended up crashing at my place in Goa for a week and said she’d make me one as a present for staying.. so sweet of her! I have always wanted to go to Louisiana… take lots of pics! What are you going to to in Udaipur?
